Trudeau's a funny guy, he just made a "major" announcement about closing the border to all non-citizens, with an exception to Americans.

First participant in coronavirus vaccine trial given dose
From CNN’s Michael Nedelman

A novel coronavirus vaccine trial in the US has now given a dose to its first participant, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases announced Monday.

The study aims to enroll a total of 45 healthy adults over a six-week time frame. Each participant will receive two injections about a month apart in varying doses.

The study, which is a Phase I trial, is meant to establish that the vaccine is safe and induces a desired response from participants' immune systems. Proving that the vaccine is effective in preventing COVID-19 infection, however, will require follow-up studies involving many more participants, which will take many more months, experts say.
“Finding a safe and effective vaccine to prevent infection with [the novel coronavirus] is an urgent public health priority,” NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said in a statement Monday. “This Phase 1 study, launched in record speed, is an important first step toward achieving that goal.”
The trial is funded by NIAID and run out of the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. The vaccine, which uses genetic material called messenger RNA, was developed by NIAID scientists in collaboration with the biotech company Moderna.
The agency credited the speed with which it stood up a Phase I trial to its prior studies on related coronaviruses SARS and MERS. Scientists had previously worked on an experimental MERS vaccine targeting a protein on the virus' surface, which gave them a "head start for developing a vaccine candidate to protect against COVID-19," the statement said.

Way to twist my words there, dude. And to think that I did say “nothing personal” in the first sentence of my post, LOL.

Anyway since you asked:

See a pattern here?

Nothing against you and your contributions. But this is pretty annoying and contributes nil at this point. The numbers are there, and still comings; the virus has made its point in abundance. These constant jabs accomplish nothing, whether they come from you or anybody else. I suggest we focus on the matter at hand, that’s all.
Suck it up man. The fact that you single me out is telling. I could make a collage of other members mentioning flu bros.

Man the fuck up dont be butthurt like i mean anything to you and just focus on the real issue.
At 40 years you wont teach me anything new and what i should write and not.

Finally a sliver of good news even though this will still be months away from being rolled out to the public. Hopefully there is no setbacks.

A start is always great news, Phase 1 could not have started any faster for me, still about a year or so away but the more science that gets done the faster we can get to a very effective vaccine.

I don't want to have to worry about this shit for years on end.

I'm not being funny, but if you are going to dress up like a bell-end, take 4 of your mates, to protest at literally the worst time about your perceived inadequacies of the government response, you should come with at least rudimentary answers to basic questions for fuck sake.

I suspect because Canada and America's economies are so intertwined that it will take more time before that announcement is inevitably made.

One note I'll make, as you're out there interacting with fellow humans try to be kind. Humans are for the most part selfish creatures, evolution made us that way, and Dawkins wrote a whole book about it. But doesn't mean we have to let this thing get the better of us.

The other day at the store I took my shopping cart through an area apparently I wasn't supposed to, even though people usually do it anyway and there are no signs. I had two random people flip out and demonstrably try to block my way, something that has never happened in years. This is no coincidence, and people are really getting on edge. After all, we have toilet paper wars in grocery stores ...

Seriously, in this crisis try to also think outside of yourself and your family. Maybe see if your friends need hand sanitizer if you have extra, don't go on a crazy toilet paper spree, and try to be courteous and accommodating to people so everyone can be on their way more quickly.

Fun random fact; Canadian border provinces are more intertwined with the US border states than they are with other provinces in Canada, due to geography. Shutting down the US/Canada border instantly shuts down like 80% of the Canadian economy. I'd hope it doesn't come to that. At least keep cargo moving.

I don't have a problem with anyone on this thread. Smiles and Cries Smiles and Cries is doing a stellar job, we have EviLore helping out, and a bunch of other fine folks reporting anecdotally from all over EU, US, and Asia.

I think GAF should carry on as it's been doing. Nobody needs to be singled out and told to leave. There's room for some gallows humour (thanks @hariseldon) to get us through this. And if it does get even more serious, I think GAF is a solid community that can really help, at least emotionally or by just letting off steam.

I think we're all moving on from the flu bro days, as we're starting to see other Gaffers actually affected by this, or other dangers. But Iike others have said, gamers are a resilient bunch.

I didn't really need to post this, so peace and contribute positively (myself included).

I'm not a big Paul Offit fan, but he's making a lot of sense here, and I hope he uses his name recognition and pull within the medical community to get the word out. Fear of the virus is 100% going to wreak (and already wreaking) more havoc than the virus itself. Though I'm sure the armchair gaf experts will call him an idiot and a moron or whatever I've been called these past couple weeks while trying to restore a little sanity.

Totally, which makes the decision logical in that sense. Whether or not it is the right decision we shall see.

UK government will not legally enforce its new social distancing measures
From CNN’s Lauren Kent and Sarah Dean in London

The UK government will not enforce its new social distancing coronavirus measures with fines or legal threats because the UK is “a mature and grown up democracy where people understand the advice being given to them,” UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Canada will deny entry to anyone who isn't a citizen or permanent resident
From CNN's Chuck Johnston

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the country will deny entry to people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

"This measure will carve out some designated exceptions including for air crews, diplomats, immediate family members of Canadian citizens, and at this time, US citizens,” Trudeau said at a news conference in Ottawa.

The measures being taken are preemptive and preventative. If nothing is done, hospitals will be overwhelmed and hundreds of thousands or millions could die in the US alone. This guy is comparing the numbers at the opening end of a global pandemic to finished flu seasons. Apples to oranges.

What kind of havoc are we talking about here? Most places are just being extra cautious and I don't see anything wrong with that.

Actor Idris Elba says he's tested positive for coronavirus
Actor Idris Elba tweeted on Monday that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and said he feels OK.
"This morning I tested positive for Covid 19. I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus," Elba wrote.

Havoc like crashing the world economy and impoverishing tons of people before this is all said and done. Like Offit says, we are electively causing massive harm that will take many years to recover from.

This is not the time to lecture individuals.
I have major problem someone burping in my direction for saying flu bro in totaly unrelated way , someone i never seen posting anything in this thread just wanting to poke me or someone else for making fun in one out of a hundred posts.
We should be allowed to ease off a littlebit here and there and just serve a common good.
I see people coming around coming her for daily updates and i believe we do a good job to help them learn something.

So again no need to call people out for certain comments or piss people off after they try their best to inform others.

Lets all stay civil lets poke some fun at others once or twice but dont take anything personal.
We are all affected by the events. I just found out last sunday night schools are closed.
If i wouldnt have my own company and we wouldnt have help from family i wouldnt know what the fuck to do .
A lot of parents got screwed last night out of the blue.
These are the issues we should focus on and talk about ideas alternatives and just plan for the next wave of chaos that is coming no matter what.

No time for bullshit.

Millions die in the US alone? I doubt that. We have 12 "serious or critical" cases out of the 4000+ active ones. People are making assumptions about how deadly this will/could be. And of course now after all the draconian measures, it's impossible to prove them wrong. Because if this fizzles out, they'll say "see, good thing we took extreme measure; it worked". If it doesn't fizzle out and gets really bad, they'll say "see, good thing we took extreme measures; if we hadn't it'd be so so much worse".

Those in power are in CYA mode. Except for Boris Johnson. That guy's got a pair, let me tell you.

Both Ford and Trudeau dropped the ball major today. That Trudeau Q&A was infuriating.

"we'll take further precautions when necessary". Great, continue to gamble with everyone's health and safety for another couple weeks in a feeble attempt to rally the economy with panic buying.

"we trust Canadians will take their healthy and the safety of others seriously and obey quarantine guidelines". My friend works at Eb and she told me people have been coming in saying they are on quarantine orders and they need something to do. People don't give a shit about the safety of others. An enforced quarantine was never going to happen, but closing down mon-essential services would do a better job at keeping these assholes at home. It's not like they'd hang out at the grocery store or gas station. But hey, let's leave the bars open, they'll go out for some fresh air and have a couple drinks to kill the time while they are "quarantined".

Your belief or disbelief doesn’t influence reality. Look at the numbers in Italy, which is further along in its outbreak.
