PLOT TWIST

Mark Cerny IS the PS5
XKlZPxl.jpg

That would probably be the only thing that would give MS a chance of winning next-gen.

Hi! Long time lurker here. I decided to register just to guess the TF of PS5. Playstation has been my main console ever since the first one and I'm going to buy PS5 at launch along with a brand new 4k tv.
Ok, here's my thoughts. I think the PS5 will be around 10-10,5 TF. This goes against the insiders here but it's my guess anyway. I think xbox will have the TF-advantage. Real world performance will be almost identical between them anyway.
That's my guess, maybe we will get answers tomorrow? I'm hyped and I think it will be a great gen!

I think they show PS4 games running on it, similar to what Microsoft shown.
O dont think sony will show as much as Microsoft did yesterday, i dont think we will see the box but i hope im wrong.

I think it will have similarities to cernys ps4 2013 presentation, but not as broad. Cerny will talk about the GPU and its RDNA2 Raytracing features, I think the focus will be on there ssd, it will be pretty similar to what Microsoft has said, as the 2 machines are very similar. There is no secret sauce apart from sonys slightly better ssd tech. I think xsx will be ahead on BC though.
I have a feeling they might use HZD to showcase the ps5. The way microsoft used Gears. Now that HZD is even coming to PC, they can do a comparison.

I will be very surprised if PS5 beats XSeX in raw GPU power.
If that happens, I'll write it off to "AMD semi-custom supports list minute changes of this kind".

For the other part of the specs, bandwidth et all, I expect it to be ahead.

Fuck, I'm coming back from work and suddenly unexpected news happens! :D

They'd better show some proper demos with it, I'm not interested in Minecraft (even with path-tracing).

Since Sony is about to reveal more details on PS5 tomorrow, I though it would be fun to look back at my two favorite PS5 rumors from the past few years. NOTE: These are my favorite rumors NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE CORRECT, but rather they are both technically elegant. They show deep technical thinking beyond the normal FAKE rumor posted on Pastebin, Reddit, Twitter, etc.

First fun Technical Rumor:

Was posted on Pastebin Jun 28, 2019: https://pastebin.com/D9av648X

Ps5
12+tflop
8gb hmb2+16gb ddr4
Custom nitero silicon
1tb nand

This one is fun, because this is the only rumor I have seen that mentioned custom Nitero silicon. Forget the 12 TF and HBM2 parts, that is not new thinking and any random person could make it up. But what very few people could come up with is “custom Nitero silicon”. First, you need to understand who or what Nitero is. Then you need to understand why it might be useful for Sony to have it in a PS5. If you are curious, do some Googling for details. But the short answer is that Nitero was designing a 60GHz wireless solution that could be used for VR and was acquired by AMD in Apr. of 2017. If you are Sony working on a PSVR2, wouldn’t you want a wireless solution? Pastebin rumors are 99.99% fake, but at least this one is thoughtful on a technical level.

Second fun Technical Rumor:

This one was posted on Reddit in Apr. 2019. I can no longer find a link, but I’ll post the details.

PS5 memory and storage systems
  • 24 GB RAM in total (20 GB usable by games)
  • 8 GB in form of 2 * 4-Hi stacks HBM2
  • Sony got "amazing" deal for HBM
  • in part due to them buying up bad chips from other customers which can't run higher then 1.6 Gbps while keeping 1.2v.
  • HBM is expected to scale down in price a lot more than GDDR6 over the console lifetime
  • Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix already shifting part of their capacity towards HBM due to falling NAND prices
  • Sony will be one of the first high volume customers of TSMCs InFO_MS when mass production starts later this year (normal InFo already used by Apple in their iPhone)
  • InFO_MS brings down the cost compared to traditional silicon interposers - has thermal and performance advantage as well
  • InFO_MS allows them to drive their 1.6 Gbps chips @ 1.7 Gbps (435 GB/sec.) without having to increase the voltage above 1.2v
  • HBM is more power efficient compared to GDDR6 - the savings were invested into more GPU power
  • additional 16 GB in form of DDR4 @ 256 bit for 102.4 GB/sec.
  • 4 GB reserved for OS, the remaining 12 GB usable by games
  • memory automatically managed by HBCC and appears as 20 GB to the developers
  • HBCC manages streaming of game data from storage as well
  • developers can use the API to take control if they choose and manage the memory and storage streaming themselves
  • memory solution alleviates problems found in PS4
  • namely that CPU bandwidth reduces GPU bandwidth disproportionately
  • 2 stacks of HBM have 512 banks (more banks = fewer conflicts and higher utilization)
  • GDDR6 better than GDDR5 and GDDR5x in that regard but still less banks than HBM
  • at the same time trying to keep CPU memory access to slower DDR4
  • very satisfied with decision to use two kinds of memory for price to performance reasons
  • allowed them to go below ~50 GFLOPs per GB/sec. bandwidth but still keep above 40 GFLOPs per GB/sec.
I love this rumor, because someone technical wrote this rumor. Most fake rumors are made by fan boys who don’t understand engineering and have almost every technical detail wrong, but this one is actually technically plausible. Forget that it sounds improbable from a cost point of view. Instead, go through it line by line and ask yourself if each line is technically correct. If it’s fake, it’s at least a technically accurate fake.

The good news is that after tomorrow, we can stop looking at rumors and start discussing actual facts.

This is great news on top of Persona 5 Royal news. I don't care if it's a rerelease, it's my fav game this gen, and it got 96 on MC?! And PS5 news tomorrow?! AND this nightmare of a thread ends?!?!?!

This is too good to be true.

I dont think ps5 will be inferior i think it will be about 10% more powerful, but i do think the recent xsx spec deep dive definitely influenced sonys decision to release there spec deep dive tomorrow.
They probably dont want the xsx specs getting all the limelight.
I think you can’t discount this idea considering they literally announced their console reveal the day after MS‘s deep spec dive.

Sony is NOT reacting or scared about the MS deep dive, what they are is prepared. All is about to be revealed. Thank fucking god.
Thanks for bearing with us during the great thirst. You have passed the time and given info that has certainly kept me interested. Hope to find you posting next time even though you said you wont. I hope after tomorrow you can talk some more about the games you've seen and also your article.
i know exactly what did they mean “our console”, but I don’t like when people adjust (in this case crop) messages to fit their narrative
You mean like someone talking shit about misquoting when he knows full well that what the other poster was saying is correct?

Amazing to believe that he doesn't actually work for Sony considering they put the entire future of the brand in his hands with the ps4

So Microsoft's plan to bait Sony out into the open was successful?

Phil: Just kidding guys! We're actually 14tf and 20GB of Ram!

I would like to see some of these back and forth from both camps haha

I imagine it will be stronger in some areas and the Series X in others. I don’t expect a PS4 vs XBOX One situation.

well technically the Xbox One was stronger in CPU performance...
so technically speaking the Xbox One and PS4 also were stronger in some areas compared to eachother lol

Better that way, he can do things his way without Sony breathing down his neck or dictating orders.

Any chance they let us pre-order tomorrow after the event? Anyone remember when we were able to pre-order the PS4?

well many smaller stores will let you preorder way before the official preorders begin. you just need to have one that you trust to actually fulfill your preorder.
these store usually conservatively estimate how many systems they will get at launch and take that amount of preorders.

I can't say that I'm excited, but I will be watching it for sure. After buying PS4 I decided to not get a PS5, since Yakuza series came to PC (that was my main reason for getting a PS4) and also I dislike Sony's censhorship in gaming. Though I believe that Microsoft will win next generation, though maybe not by numbers of units sold, but in general I feel like MS will make a comeback.

Technically speaking, the word "stronger" makes no sense in reference to electronic devices.
