Loving the game. The game doesn't give me a chance to get bored. Each combat encounter is a blast so far and I'm enjoying the platforming too.

Only playing on hurt me plenty and I've not run out of 1ups yet, but it's feels challenging enough as it is. I'll very likely replay on a harder level when I'm done.

Tips:

  1. Don't forget your chainsaw will always fill to one pip. Use it. You can be getting more ammo every 30 seconds or whatever the refill rate is. It's quick.
  2. Use your freeze grenade and then switch to your frags for a decent 2 hit combo. Setting them on fire after they are frozen, works too for armor.
  3. Freeze grenade plus the Ballista alt fire blades is a very strong combo.
  4. Don't forget about Blood Punch, it does a ton of damage and can completely dismantle enemy armor or smash groups.
  5. Using the double barrels meat hook to traverse across the map and then switch to your preferred weapon is a good movement strategy. If you have the Double Barrel mastery, while zipping around with the meat hook, the enemy will just drop armor.
  6. Always be dashing. I am zipping around like the flash. Especially in the air. The Slow down rune really helps you plan the battlefield better.

Anyone know how this bonus XP stuff works? You just add friends to it and you get some of their XP?

Great tips. Thanks!

On a side note they really wanted you to not rely on the Super Shotgun this time around. Lol. Which is cool but at least the Meathook is really useful

The UI options are really nice. I still don't love the default colour palate, but I understand what they were going for, bright bold easy to parse. The other options are nice colour schemes but your information becomes too uniform looking, so I ended up sticking with the default, but I much prefer the extra screen real estate you get by setting UI to small.

I also turned off the visible Active Runes, just taking up space.

Loving this shit so far.

Nope, the Super Shotgun is Powerful as fuck!
I one-shot always a Revenant or a Prowler up close very easily.

I meant in terms of Ammo, mostly. You could get by in Doom 2016 by using the Super Shotgun and the Gauss Cannon, for the most part. But yeah it’s still a nice tool, you just can’t spam it.

I love the fact that very early in the story...

... reveal that there are no angles in the world of DOOM. Just Demons and Demons who appearing as "Saviors" to the human kind and other alien races.

Just like Devil May Cry series, hahahaha!!!

For anyone wondering where their rewards are from Slayers Club or owning the other Dooms, in the settings menu, make sure you go to the Bethesda.net//your account tab, there should be "reconcile entitlements", click that and you should get all your rewards. I thought it would be automatic but it wasn't. Amazing game.

After reading through this thread I logged onto the PS store and bought.
Played through 2016 a couple werks ago and forgot how much fun the series is.

This feels like a Quake III Arena reference from area 2. The banners, coloring and statue are very Q3A to me.

It’s odd but some of the early levels reminded me of Quake. Good lord do I want a new Quake. Imagine the nail gun nailing people to the wall. In my veins, please.

trying to find my last secret on the first level! It’s killing me!! I have one more page!!

My only beef is too much Mario shit. It's not difficult, it just gets in the way of the otherwise fast gameplay. With that said, I'm always in awe of how well this engine looks and runs in concert.

Played the first few levels.

I’m handling things fine, but I find myself not entering a combat flow state like I would in 2016, thanks to the gimped ammo capacities and constant need to deal with weak points. The story isn’t as cool as the punk rock “fuck off” approach of 2016’s doomslayer. Not sold on the world building attempts either.

I would’ve gone in a different direction. It’s plenty fun though and I’m sure it’ll get better once more abilities and weapons unlock. The weapon feel is improved against enemies with the location specific damage and how their flesh rips away or heads pop off, but the heavies are real bullet sponges if you try to brute force them instead of going for weak points.

100% agree. I also dislike how the level design in this one break the pace of the fight a lot and added lots of unnecessary platforming

Still a fun game no doubt

the part where Doomguy speaks just comes off as a borderline parody of himself, hurhur rip and tear, the canned quake 3 dialogue made Doomguy more interesting

Finished it. I will not be replaying it to say the least. I absolutely hated it near the end and it got annoying/tiresome already around 3rd of the game.
Just constant cacophony of monsters, systems and pointless upgrades... I rarely felt in control of the fight while in 2016 Doom, I felt like a badass all the way.
Why is this getting such a high reviews?! Technically, I feel like 2016 looked a more detailed but this one has some amazing looking vistas.

I will try to point out some of my biggest issues with this:
-Platforming- a lot of weird platforming. There is a lot of it. It's annoying and does not even make the levels more interesting. The levels just look disjointed as the result with floating handles, platforms and climbing walls.
-Fighting- too many systems of side weapons. The flamethrower restores way too little armor for this being it's main function. You use C,R,V,G,F,E keys all the time.
-Weak Pionts- One biggest problems. Every tough enemy type has a weak point. You can kill them normally but but they are tanks. So You end up killing every cacodemon and others the same way... for hours.
-Maruders- Great as a boss fight(almost sekiro inspired) but as a normal enemy together with other enemies? wtf... and used too many times.
-Collectibles- Just like systems and updates. Every level has a set number of X,Y,Z runes, coins, skills whatever to find. Feels like on the design board of very level there is written "each level must have challange X, 10 big encounters, toys etc". Too much!
-Atmopshere- Arcade through and through. 1ups, colorful floating pick ups, rotating platforming elements like in Mario. The 2016 or older games tone is gone.
-Plot- space vikings but also not, many characters You see only once. The story is all over the place and ends poorly. The lore is interesting and I like how they explained hell but it's not coherent.

In general - I wanted to like it since I loved 2016 game but every(especially later) fight felt cheap. Tons of enemies attacking around me and I never felt badass but barely fighting for control and running over the battlefield looking for someone to chainsaw, burn or glory kill... Feels like they threw together every idea they had. In the end, it was just annoying and tiresome especially during later firefights

Ultra-Violence in this game seems much harder than 2016, mainly due to the restrictive nature of the systems. You HAVE to attack the weak point or you'll never kill it. Meanwhile 50 trash mobs which can kill you in a second are swarming around you.

I feel like they probably didn't need to add this much to the formula, DOOM should be about shooting enemies. Instead you're doing about 16 other things which aren't shooting enemies just to survive and if you fuck up even once during a 5-minute firefight you die instantly and need to do the whole fight over. I don't know who they are targeting with this gameplay.

Almost done in Nightmare, basically the first half is challenging and then you just dismantle everything.

You can refill your armor insanely fast with the flamethrower if you burn more than one enemy, thats why you get so many packs of useless mobs in fights

as for heavies being too tanky if you neglect weak points, thats mostly the case for the cyber mancubus, all the others take the same amount of damage no matter what

I feel like people dont use damage combos right, especially with the frag grenade which will make you save ammo when used well. Same for marauders, they seem hard at first but once you get how to utterly destroy them in two / three staggers they're just annoying at best even in nightmare. Eternal is all about having really good keybinds and swapping your weapons like a maniac while you manage cooldowns in between.

For example when you stagger a marauder with the SSG, you can fit in frag + crossbow + rocket + crossbow before staggering it again

Or like stagger bfg if you really don't feel up for it lol. At the end of the day the only monster taking a fuckton of damage is the Tyrant

I was using all of combos methods but it's just over my head... I don't feel it. 2016 game still had some systems but not too much. I think Doom should be a simple combat puzzle and Eternal goes too far for me. Kinda like later parts of God of War. Everything and everyone explodes in Your face at once

after finishing the game:

Lol. There is no Heven or Hell. Looks like there are just other races of space aliens. One of which just happens to be using humans as fuel for their energy (argent) and others made gods of themselves.
But then there is this mysterious voice after You kill Khan.

I'm pretty sure the super shotgun is the single strongest point blank weapon.
This is true. However keep in mind they added damage to almost every single Demon close range attack to discourage people from relying on it too much (according to Hugo Martin).

Yes it’s hard. It’s even harder if you consider yourself “good” at Doom 2016 because you need to unlearn the old play style (forums all over are full of whiners who can’t cruise through on Ultra Nightmare and are pissed). Play it like Doom 2016 and you’ll absolutely hate the game.

I'm not liking it after the first few levels. The game feels bloated with too many upgrades and mechanics which feel like bullet point design, and the combat doesn't flow like it did in 2016 IMHO. The platforming is mediocre, overused, and a bad fit for the game, just like the narrative. And some of the additions, especially the weak point system, seem to limit your options instead of adding to them.

I want to like the game because it looks good, runs great, and is challenging, but it has not clicked so far, to say the least. I'll persevere and hope later levels are better, but 2016 was excellent from start to finish.

Finished it. My hands...they hurt.

Possibly the best designed FPS combat wise ever. The flow and skill required to master it is very high in a good way.

It's a different game than 2016 but it's a better game. Seems like people expected more of a power Trip than a skill based game. Not the point of Doom in any capacity. If you liked 2016 and aren't liking this I suggest throwing it on easy because that's the only way you are going to get the power Trip.

Last level was bonkers.

Final boss didn't love. I think it was a good idea but too long.

HDR is amazing in this game. ID Tech 7 is the shit.

Narrative was solid. They save the good stuff for the second half. I expect one of the DLC episodes to be a prequel.

The funny thing is, I find that the "power-trip" is still there, you've just got to use the tools at your disposal a ton to eak that potential out of yourself. The dance of dashing around projectiles, darting in with your chainsaw (Which is always on cooldown every 30 seconds, use it on low-status mobs as much as possible), and flame belch to keep your overall health ammo and armor pool up is satisfying as fuck. There's a rhythm and flow to this game, much like in the original reboot, it's just playing to a different beat, and not the same song and dance that people were used to four years ago! The aggression is still there, it's just a more "thoughtful" form of it. Never thought I'd actually be using the combat shotgun, or hell, even the whole armory of weapons this time around. The whole weakpoint system actually leaves you beholden to try everything and upgrade everything! Unlike Doom 2016 that had a small handful of superior weapons you'd just stick to for the vast majority of encounters.

And visually, THIS is what I'd consider the staple "Doom" look, not like the sleek aesthetic of the last game. Chunkyier character models and envionments, traps built into the environment everywhere, hell, even the enemies look a lot more like the rendered sculpted models that the original Id staff scanned and used in the first two games as well! It feels "gamey" first and foremost and that's exactly what I want from my doom games! Love the mix of exploration, platforming and combat this time around. Exploration and navigation felt like it took a backseat in Doom 2016 past the halfway point!

Just requested a refund. There's a quality game here and I can see why some people love it, but what can I say? I just wasn't having much fun and the encounters seemed more like a chore than a joy to complete. I have plenty of other things to play anyway.

damn, this game is a disaster, completely not fun either in single player or multiplayer

Just because you suck at it doesn't make it a disaster.

I kid I kid.

But as someone who likes Star Fox Zero I think it's fair to say you're in the minority here.

Just finished it. I fuckin' LOVED IT. Not a huge fan of the last boss, but I loved winding up the meat grinder on the way there. Really got a good mastery of the systems down by the end. Super Shotgun/Ballista/Super Shotgun constant switching and then using the meat hook to slow-mo double jump and dash around the battlefield is such an amazing juggle. I loved the mechanics and the more limited ammo forces you to learn the perks of every weapon and what situation they are best in and when they can be used in a pinch in another situation. Great game. Fantastic, id. Can't wait to jump into the Master Levels. Ultra-Violence was the perfect difficulty for me. Beat me up a bit but It made me get better. Did have to take breaks though as this game has a lot of pressure and it can be exhausting in the best way possible, where you just take 5 mins. to collect your thoughts. Great job!!!!
