PlayStation 5 Operating System to Make Playing Games “As Easy as Netflix”

In over 4 decades of gaming, the only time I had the thought of "gee, this game is tough to launch" is when I needed to load up the mouse driver, mscdex and smartdrv and keep it within the conventional memory cap so I could launch Micropose's F-15 Strike Eagle 3. Helix cloaked drivers to the rescue!

Consoles are supposed to be about fun, convenience, and ease of use, and both consoles this gen moved away from that too much. The Xbox in particular was just awful this gen from a usability standpoint, right from the start, but the PS OS has lots of problems too. They badly need a rethink.

Do you have a Pro or X? Because any other app in background slows the base PS4 OS quite a bit and it hangs quite often. In the end, if you don't save your game progress you will require leaving it on rest mode to resume later on, which is not power efficient, and a burden to the player.

I have a launch Xbox One.

PS4 UI is near perfect and Sony should copy it for PS5. Easy as Netflix means that im going to have to refresh the page to watch what I want to watch in 1080P to get around that circle that indicates buffering? Yay!!!

Absolutely agree.

Loading something I’m already watching on Netflix is a matter of seconds, whereas loading up a PS4 game feels like a minutes-long ordeal with multiple loading screens and 15 logos.

If this has an affect on my desire to play, as a gaming enthusiast, I can only imagine how it affects the mainstream.

The less friction with starting a game, the more people play.

That’s good for both developers/publishers, and players looking for a pick-up-and-play experience, and an instant burst of fun.

Exactly and they are right to be trying to fix this problem. This is a HUGE advantage of Switch. I didn't realize how much more often I would start up a game when it's so instant. I finished Link's Awakening with one million ten-minute bursts.

No one mentioned UI or Speed..of the UI .. LMAO

No one mention, but compared. Wtf is your understanding about Operating System to Make Playing Games “As Easy as Netflix”?

Now I'm curious. Not speed, not UI, but OS?

Reduce loading times between areas and I'm happy. I don't even care about graphics.

Pillars of eternity became a slog when the load times were 20 seconds between houses.

Right.......That’s exactly what this means. :pie_eyeroll:

Ease of use is what I took from this article.

That's a good way to put it. I hate 97% of Netflix content so I don't subscribe, but their UI is industry leading in terms of immediacy.

I totally feel this:

The advances they made going from PS3 to PS4 is insane. I feel like I need days to spare to turn on my PS3.

Days -> Hours -> Minutes

If Cerny can do that, I'd definitely play way more, it's a game changer for me.

So, the way I picture this is if you select a game title (meaning using the d-pad or analog stick to select the game and do nothing else), then the PS5 OS (psOS from here on out), will automatically start the game without the user telling psOS to start the game.

If it's like that, I'm excited.

So pressing X or A when you are on the game tile is too difficult now?

Maybe it’ll play through the game for you too.

This will be excellent if like Netflix you have a button to 'skip intro'. That crap is what takes forever when you boot up a game.

Xbox might become the Netflix of Gaming but PS5 will become the Netflix of OS. :messenger_weary::messenger_ok:

They're suggesting that the PS5 will allow you to quickly boot into games, exit out of them and boot into something else. The XSX quick resume feature video already shows us how this will probably feel in practice (not trying to console war). The closest analogue to this is Netflix.

Now what would be cool is if games were segmented into chapters so you could boot into different sections of a game right from the selection menu. That's a Netflix interface feature I'd like to see in games.

You know all this is OS related right? Both smoth and UI design need to work in harmony to that happen.

He just used a terrible example.

The way which Jason describes PS5 UI is something like this???

It's a small game changer, at least compared to PC where the blight of launchers has fucking killed any immediacy.

Instant hopping in and out of different save games without having to first load up the actual games is game changing for consoles and a huge advantage over other ways of playing.

This will mean engagement and time spent in games goes up dramatically because firstly, you spend more time in the game and secondly, it'll make you more likely to have a gaming session because the PS5 is soo fast and immediate.

I agree Open World are procedural but they use textures yet.
I believe faster SSD allow to have more textures available to the procedural task build the world than slower SSDs.

So that way the world with a faster SSD will have more grounds, details in objects, etc even when using procedural tasks.

In close to fours decades of gaming I hate how everything become install, load, load, load, load....

I’m used to pre-PS age when there is nothing of that.

I never got sleep with SNES playing all night while with PS and forward it was always a battle to keep sober during load screens.

I wonder do they mean that upon selecting a game you would automatically have an option to resume the content without seeing multiple intro screens and finally a menu, where possible? All single player content being A prime example of this being possible.

If so, I would be very much in favour of that.

Of course. But he's not saying that the UI will look exactly like Netflix as other posters here have assumed (I'm also not saying that you've argued this). He's saying moving in and out of different games will be quick, like Netflix.

I'm sincerely scared of what they will bring (both of them) actually none of the os are good, the've got quite convoluted in a lot of aspects (xbox especially), i just hope for good, but i'm skeptical, ion software often less is more and i still don't see that approach to OS

Haha, no, I'd just thought it'd be a neat feature. It would also cut down the wait time getting into the game. If I just hover over the game title it will skip the informational screens and get me right at the "Press Start" screen when I'm ready to play.

I hate Netflix’s UI. Especially the horrible autoplay.

OMG, Ok that is awesome. I would honestly love that. Hopefully the XsX will have something similar. If not I give Sony big points on that, I am so sick of all the bs intro, splash screens and loading when I just want to play a damn game.

Another console war thread because of the way you did OP.

That 2nd part is completely irrelevant to the topic and unnecessary.

Games seem already pretty easy to play to me. I pop in a disc and hit play. How much easier could it get than that?

If they want you to be able to just jump into games and start playing immediately, then tell devs to cut out annoying tutorial sections.
