889 deaths in Italy ffs.

Answer me this though, those who can or might know. Wikipedia says the annual deaths from regular flu is "290,000–650,000/year".

So what happens to all those people? Why is the health system not overburdened then? What am I not understanding?

Edit: lol, looking closer the worst ever flus are literally called Asian flu, Hong Kong flu, and Russian flu. Fucking left-wing press and their Chinese flu bs.

Which would be a reason why we can't just have billions of mask sitting around I assume? Like it would be great to stockpile, but what if the next pandemic is in 25 years everything we stock pilled now wouldnt they expire?
Yes they would expire.
I know they stock piled after h1n1 but they are all expired.

BUT.
The world had 3 months heads up to get their shit together and prepare.

Noone is calling you a liar but it's irresponsible in times like this to go around spreading these types of claims without any reference or corroborating evidence. We have to look out for the dumbest among us

From March 18-22, the Chinese city of Wuhan reported no new cases of the virus through domestic transmission — that is, infection passed on from one person to another. The achievement was seen as a turning point in efforts to contain the virus, which has infected more than 80,000 people in China. Wuhan was particularly hard-hit, with more than half of all confirmed cases in the country.

But some Wuhan residents who had tested positive earlier and then recovered from the disease are testing positive for the virus a second time. Based on data from several quarantine facilities in the city, which house patients for further observation after their discharge from hospitals, about 5%-10% of patients pronounced "recovered" have tested positive again.

Some of those who retested positive appear to be asymptomatic carriers — those who carry the virus and are possibly infectious but do not exhibit any of the illness's associated symptoms — suggesting that the outbreak in Wuhan is not close to being over

Also from the article: "Under its newest COVID-19 prevention guidelines, China does not include in its overall daily count for total and for new cases those who retest positive after being released from medical care. China also does not include asymptomatic cases in case counts."

I agree.

But when i report something it is from my wife from her hospital.
You get a peak behind the scene.
So i cant give a direct source and i believe i have a certain credibility in this thread as well i have a certain responsibility to forward this type of information.
I would assume that people listen every day to their goverment and are informed about scamms going around.
In fact it was nonstop on the radio yesterday.

What are my options here?
Do i say nothing and keep the peace or do i open my mouth and get called out every time?

All i say believe me or not , stay alert and stay informed.

New UK Figures. 17089 (+2546) which represents a 17.5% gain on the day before. Though that marks a drop-down from the 25% gain that day, which is encouraging in that the social distancing initiative and the lockdown might be starting to have an impact. Total new tests were 6999 of which 36.7% were confirmed positive which equates to a little over 1 in 3.

Hope everyone is keeping well. Spent my Saturday sorting my bookcases out which was good.

All though this raises fears that you can be reinfected, I am going to say this is probably because of crappy test kits in China and their rush to declare people "cured" from the virus and discharge people.

Don't forget that China sent out a bunch of test kits that were defective.

There is nothing that mysterious about "tested negative first".
Remember they were talking about "incubation" period?
Well, tests have certain threshold to trigger.
A positive is guaranteed positive.
A negative could mean infection is there, but consequences from it are under the test's sensitivity.

That'is worldwide.
There are 60 million people living in Italy.
World population is 7.7 billion.
Italy isn't even 1% of it, hence Italian share of those deaths is 2-3 thousand.

My quarantine update, guys.

Briefs that should have come to us on the second day on quarantine arrived at the last day. (when we were starting, Germany was at 1k or so, I guess they got overwhelmed).
This Thursday my daughter got tested, today (surprising as it's Saturday and we are in Germany) we got a call from local authorities informing us the test was negative.
(I actually would preferred positive as at this point it could only mean were in "no symptoms" group)

Asked the lady about "really really negative? Maybe your test sucks, will it be re-tested".
The answer was, nah, we assume it's correct, live on.

We're going to need Derek Jeter to talk him out of it.

In all seriousness, that would be the worst move he could possibly make. Will cause panic on those areas, and will make people in other areas feel safe when it does absolutely nothing for them.
Lock down the country you fucking moron.

"We spoke to the historian and philosopher Yuval Noah Harari, whose book, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, spans the entirety of human history, and explores how little we really know about ourselves." (3/28/20)

Necessity is the mother of invention.

I think the positive from this situation (and any sort of crisis) is that it allows for a reexamination of what we really find important, for a type of reinvention - which can happen both individually and collectively. It shows us the cracks in our armor and gives us a new way of viewing ourselves and our methods of operating. Change is a constant, and good always inevitably comes from bad (until the coin spins again :p).

I think if we're honest, many of us have found human culture to be at a tipping point for a long time anyway. This may just be the catalyst for some good things long-term. (But I'm always optimistic by nature.)

In the WHO report on China they claimed around 20% of those who were infected with the virus required hospitalization. 5% requiring intensive care. Those number vary somewhat by country but we'll use 20% to demonstrate.

around 1% of flu patients require hospitalization in a country such as the U.S.

a flu patient would be hospitalized for 1 to 2 weeks
a coronavirus patient requires 3 to 6 weeks

so per 1000 flu cases that's 10 people for a total of 10 to 20 weeks of hospital time
per 1000 coronavirus cases that's 200 people for a total of 600 to 1200 weeks of hospital time

coronavirus is also more contagious than the flu

Also keep in mind that when your healthcare system is overwhelmed the mortality rates of all other life threatening conditions will greatly increase as well.

This is what makes the coronavirus so deadly.

That would end up in the Supreme Court as some county with 0 cases will object and they'd have to prove to a judge that county with 0 cases poses enough threat to be forcibly locked down.

Ya thats my point. We can make stockpiles of this stuff but if we don't use it then they are useless.
Which is really a hindsight 20/20. COULD we have start making more mask once report break about human to human infection, maybe but it is too late at that point since most of our mask come from china. Shipment by boat take a month or 2 at best. b And it is not that easy to force a us company to suddenly start making them. Remember GM Bark at Trump order of making venitator?

What a weird spin to take considering that if they never contracted the virus, they probably wouldn’t be dead. Stupid.
I'm not sure what your criticism of that is. They're pointing out how many extra deaths, above the normal rate are we expecting due to COVID19. What are you basing your "no one contracts the virus in the first place" scenario from?

no it won’t - all it means is that people from the tristate can’t leave and go infect other states like Rhode Island and Florida.. it wouldn’t be the same as a China style lockdown

Supposedly Rhode Island police are stopping and questioning people in cars with NY plates, so some informal measures may already be in place on a state level.

Wow.. the Spain numbers come in while I am sleeping so I usually overlook them.

Italy today:

+5974 cases
+889 deaths

But look at Spain...

+8189 cases
+832 deaths

Spain's peak day so far was 2 days ago (8578) but too soon to tell if their lock down/etc is slowing it down, as the weekend #s tend to be lower than usual.

Spain is having almost equal deaths though, and currently they're like 20K cases behind Italy.. wtf is going on in Spain?

"Some 769 people who tested positive for coronavirus in the UK have now died. But how does that compare to the number who die in the UK each year? Sky's Thomas Moore crunches the latest COVID-19 data." (3/27/20)

Did he subtract the average people who won't die in car crashes and workplace deaths, and a % a people who avoid the flu while also avoiding this? The Spanish flu had almost no effect on overall deaths during the years it was active

So what happens to all those people? Why is the health system not overburdened then? What am I not understanding?
Due to flu vaccines, herd immunity, constant study of yearly flu trends, and a long and detailed understanding of how the flu works, humanity overall can deal with the flu pretty well and as a result, those people who need treatment can get it. i.e. we're prepared for it.

If the flu all of a sudden out of nowhere became twice as worse as it usually is, then that would cause a shock to the system because we weren't prepared and overburden our health care. We're seeing something similar occur now. We're more or less equipped to deal with the flu, but add in the extra burden from COVID19, and you hit the threshold of sustainability and the system starts to unravel, which is what you're seeing in places like China, Italy, and Spain.

Fortunately, we're also capable of quickly ramping up production of necessary goods, so while NYC is on a trajectory for worsening numbers, hopefully we can increase heathcare capacity enough to accommodate everyone.

Which would be a reason why we can't just have billions of mask sitting around I assume? Like it would be great to stockpile, but what if the next pandemic is in 25 years everything we stock pilled now wouldnt they expire?

There is balance to be found. It would be silly, for example, to build and maintain enough hospitals to be able to bed everyone during a fullblown pandemic that only hits us every century or so. That would be a massive amount of resources going towards preparation that could be better spent in a myriad of ways. Same with any stockpiling... it is a waste of resources that can be far better spent... until it isn't.

But this also means we will always be caught somewhat flatfooted in a crisis situation when it does happen. But the answer is not overprepping, but rather, being a well oiled machine capable of quickly pivoting to a new purpose. We see this with companies pivoting to mask, ventilator, sanitizer production.

What this means is that having our medical system overload during a pandemic is not a 'failure' of the system, but a given. Of course a crisis strains a system, since a system built to withstand any crisis whatsoever would be terribly suboptimal at all other times. Normally, we are distributed enough that this isn't a problem. An earthquake, or terrorist attack on one coast will see aid [workers, blood donations, food] come from the other. A pandemic [or large scale war] makes this harder since every system is stressed.

It seems like the US is pivoting extremely well around where I am. Companies are reinventing supply lines - produce delivery companies, for example, are stepping up and getting the job done. Other stores are doing curbside delivery. One factory i know of starter making masks. All good.

The important thing to understand is that a crisis always tests a system. It has to, by definition. My hope is this is a kick in our pants to redesign certain aspects of our system that were bottle necks. For example, i absolutely love that Trump shredded regulations regarding telehealthcare. Allowing doctors in non-stressed regions to handle basic unrelated doctor visits in stressed states is huge, and i believe will be the future of medicine, increasing the supply of doctors across the board [and thus reducing cost] in the future. I know another company is getting rid of payment by check and using this time to implement direct deposit for everything. Small little things, here and there, but as long as we don't crash the economy into a brick wall there will be a lot of gain from this amid the loss.

We needed a national lockdown 2 weeks ago. As long as people continue to move, the virus will spread. It starts as a small fire and then consumes everything that continues to move. The harsh reality is that today around 500 Americans will die and by Easter 2000 Americans per day will die. You don't have to have to have an Uncle that worked at MIT tell you that. Anybody who knows basic math or business would tell you that.

Brix and Fauci need to be straight up with Americans instead of trying to please Trump. There are still Americans that believe in the Easter Bunny. Level with Americans, this is going to be bad. Very bad. Thousands will die and if we start the economy back up too early, millions could die because you haven't allowed the fires to burn out.

Our leaders fucked up big time, but we can't start pointing fingers because more people will die. They can't fuck up more. We have to minimize the deaths. In the next few days every city in America is going to start blowing up like an uncontrollable wildfire. Right now we know that 100,000 people in America have it but it is more likely that millions of people are infected since we can't test everybody

The problem with America is that there is no plan. There is no leadership. It's all piece-meal. We are playing kindergarten checkers instead of grand master chess. We need to be thinking several moves ahead to beat this virus. Don't tell us you are taking this day by day. The uncertainty is killing Americans. What is the real plan over the next several months? Don't tell us to believe in the Easter Bunny. We don't.

Flu season can put a strain on healthcare systems as it, but part of the answer is that they're to some degree dimensioned for it. All these COVID-19 cases sit on top of the existing health care system strain. Furthermore, these outbreaks are happening in relatively concentrated areas. Left unchecked, the total death rate would likely be much higher than that of the flu.

Again you can't do a national lockdown with the constitution. Counties with 0 cases will object and then the government would have to provide proof to a judge that those places with 0 cases pose enough threat to revoke their constitutional freedoms.

You naturarly rotate perishing stock out.

Same with medecines, food etc you might want to keep in a national storage.

Its a huge cost to start from 0 though.. :/

Quarantine curfew extended beyond the weekend in Dubai. No going out between the hours of 8pm and 6am.

Lets see how long this keeps getting extended for :messenger_neutral:

Hopefully it's just this week and that can be the end of it and the virus will be under control locally at the very least.

I miss shitposting on GAF from the poolside, it's just not the same from inside my apartment.
