[E3-MS] Why Ninja Theory joined Xbox.

Good, now Ninja Theory can be unleashed to create their magnum opus single player narrative driven game without the threat of financial viability looming over the project.

Hellblade was made with just 20 people on a cheap $10m budget. Can you imagine what they could do with just double the resources? :)

Good thing creative independence was part of the deal... I am having good hopes for this.

I had issues with the PR of Ninja Theory during the run up to DmC. I don't remember who it was but one their big wigs basically gave a finger to the fans and said shit like "feels like 60 fps."

Not sure even if that guy is still there but it really soured me on them.

I need to give hellblade a shot though. It's clear they are very talented and offer something very creative.

Is it though? You can purchase a company, but that doesn’t mean the talent will always remain. What happens to Ninja Theory if the next game they produce isn’t a hit? Will MS close them down like they have in the past? How has Rare been these days?

Only time will tell , but I’m more cautious than optimistic.
I'd hate to see anything bad happen to these guys. Naughty Dog gets all the accolades though Ninja Theory does the cinematic game thing much better. Underrated studio.

It's incredible tbh, I just got Hellblade, just finished with the bridge, what an insane game. Really good story telling, the way those runes tells stories of norse mythology

Didn't they do it in like three years as well? That's fucking insane. I think I read somewhere that the studio is being expanded somewhere around 100 people. Plus they are already in development for their next title. Expecting to get a tease this time next year!

I dunno, obviously the short term funds are nice. But can ya really trust MS when it comes to anything that doesn't fit the modern trends? In the video NT said they wanted to stay away from the machine that is "modern AAA gaming". I think people forget a little too quickly....

This is a company that recently nearly caused Platinum Games to shut it's doors, insisting on adding co-op to a game that wasn't built for it. Closed Lionhead Studios after insisting that Lionhead create a GaaS Fable game or face closure, rejected the pitch for Fable IV.

So yeah just, get in to bed with Microsoft........

So MS answer to Horizon/God of War is supposed to come from this single small studio?
They are an amazing studio, but do they know how to work on such a big scale? Hiring more staff and getting 80 people to work together is much different from working with only 20 people, and it can have disastrous consequences.
It will be a long road for the studio and I don't see them having a game ready for next gen launch. Maybe by 2022.
It will be a long time before MS can enter the SP adventure game race.

It was probably Tameem Antoniades. He's very popular for quotes like these during DmC's development

well for us its just a hobby, for a studio its business. people forget about that more then once.
if people would argue and discuss as much about food, waste and textiles, like they do in video game fanboyism the world would be a better place.

They already have around a hundred people - they just couldn't have them all working on Hellblade because they had to have most of the studio doing contract work on stuff like Disney Infinity in order to fund Hellblade's development.

Obviously the Microsoft purchase frees them of that requirement in the long term, meaning they can dedicate their full resources to one thing (although in the short term they may still have some contracts they'll have to complete).

I assume they needed money and stability. MS offered them (even if we know their expertise on cancelling games and shutting down studios).

I think they were a good fit for Sony but they they would have been a small studio and maybe had a bad experience with Heavenly Sword. In MS they will be their "artsy, good single player narrative focused experience" team. Unlike in Sony, in MS they will be the best ones in this type of game so they will be better valued.

Just sit down, relax..stop waving your hands all over the place and put em where I can see em. Nobody's doing any answers to nobody...relax..breathe, see it gets better. To be a soldier not an easy task, pace yourself is the key .

Team wants to make games, PERIOD..but with infinite pockets and freedom to reach untapped potential, what we get is what we get.

Pointless reply to a 2 months old post...

'Small scale games' does not scream 'Infinite pockets'

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
This is an amazing opportunity to be involved at the very start of the development of one of our recently announced titles and requires an experienced, talented and passionate designer with a demonstrable track-record as a Creative Lead or Lead Designer on multiple AAA titles.
This is for their new second studio on Cambridge, so probably nothing to do with Hellblade 2.

It's MS. They have tons of money bruh
You, and all those saying that as if money was evil or something... Whoever owned the studio had an opportunity to finance their next big project, and lower the personal financial risk to them (this is how you finance if nobody wants to pay for it).

Sometimes you have to pool the ressources to get to your goal.

Reading all these old posts about how this is great as they can make their epic sprawling narrative-driven titles with massive budgets, seriously underestimated how many of these first-party studios would just become work-horses for throw-away gamepass titles.

This game was made by not more than 10 people. They’re going AAA next and you know it. Hold up the hate until then. You’ll get another shot.

MS is doing a very good thing here.
Freedom to create what they want and full support financially is always a good thing.
Best of luck to this studio. I have fond memories of Heavenly Sword. Hope they do a remaster some time if that is at all possible.

“IF” my Aunt had balls she’d be my uncle. Has Ninja Theory produced some solid games in the past? So no reason as of yet to think they otherwise would. Oh yeah, I forgot, they are making games exclusively for MS now so yeah, they are automatically hated.

Yeah well, accept Ninja Theory stated that they already had this as a concept/unfinished game, before they got acquired. Same thing with grounded in Obsidian I am obviously not fan of these games, but obviously we already know that Ninja Theory work on the Hellblade 2 and something called project Mara.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Good for them; never liked any of their games so it hardly excites me that they have less budget woes lol I generally don't like acquisitions but at least MS releases on PC and if the studio is happy, more power to them I guess.

Why yes, you did miss the point!
Allow me to break it down for you:
Bleeding Edge (the first Microsoft Ninja Theory game) is pure Game Pass shovelware, and the person I quoted was trying to excuse its existence and poor reviews with "bu bu their next game will be AAA, just you wait!", and "b-baka, you're just a hater!". My post was making fun of the "hate" part, specifically.

Still following? Good!

The amount of developers that actually worked on the game is completely irrelevant. What matters here is that Bleeding Edge is EXACTLY the kind of B-tier game that many people said would come out of these acquisitions. I'm not saying there won't be AAA games (there obviously will be), but they're ALSO still relegated to Game Pass crap with their B team.

Understand now, or shall I explain further? :)

Notice the part about downplaying the acquisition of the studio... Comparing this game to AAA games just because... Without knowing, or while being disingenuous to the fact that, the studio that made this game is very small and the game was a side project well before the studio got acquired so there is no way MS's so called "Workhorse throwaway Gamepass Initiative" could have dictated the direction of this game...

Still following? Good!

The amount of developers that worked on the game are absolutely relevant. Doesn't matter if you can't understand that. But let me give you a hint. You don't judge the potential of an entire studio on the output of a tiny fraction of it's devs.

Oh, and I'd love to have your time machine mate. Let me know when you're done with the rental! Would love to see how all these games are going to end up just like you did. Not that I need to since I have my own psychic powers... Whoa, I'm sensing a reading from you now!... Squints eyes... Ohmmm Ohmmm, All MS Gaympiss geyms Trsh, Ohmmm Ohmmm. Wow, how'd I do?
