Since Sony's Covid contribution got more news in game sites since it included indie dev help and free Nathan Drake and Journey downloads, he assumed that's basically all the Covid donations the big game companies are offering.

Goes to show the lack of news sites he reads since every news site (especially business sites like Yahoo Finance feeds) tells people on a daily basis what's going on with Covid and what corporations are doing about it whether it's donations, laying off people, hiring people (Walmart and Amazon are big on getting more people) and any government involvement.

For example weeks ago, I saw an article that all Canadian banks are cutting interest rates of their credit cards in half. The avg rate is about 20-22% and all of them decreased them to about 10%. And payments are being deferred another 3-6 months too. You'll never gets this huge news bite in from a game site.

The whole world is in crisis right now including of course the gaming industry. Why should we be afraid to question the decision of huge companies like MS and Nintendo to mostly ignore this current situation? The same would have applied for Sony as well if they didn't do anything.
In fact if you look back at the thread for PS+ April games i had said there that both Sony and MS should have offered at least one more game in their PS+/XBLG services.

So out of Sony's $100M fund, $10M goes direct to helping medical workers, and the other $90M is vague and split between students and game developers and other media people.

In other words, the majority of the funds are self serving with some kind of business partnership angle to it.

The Tokyo-based conglomerate said the initiative would target three areas: supporting front-line medical professionals and first responders to fight the virus; aiding children and educators who must now work remotely; and supporting members of the creative community in the entertainment industry, "which has been greatly impacted by the spread of the virus."

How the fund would be used to support the creative community and entertainment industry was somewhat vague at the time of Sony's announcement. The company said it would seek to provide aid to various creative sectors where it is a stakeholder — motion pictures, television, music, games and animation.

The company's statement said: "Together with its group companies engaged in the entertainment industry, Sony will seek ways to support up-and-coming creators, artists and all those in professions supporting the industry, who have been impacted by the cancellation or postponement of concerts and live events, or the shutting down of film and television productions."

The new Sony fund's contributions to medical support were the most clear-cut.
