Does it have two I/O co-processors, DMAC, Sram and coherency engines?

I'm not sure what they do but I'd like to know if the Series X has them or something similar.

I'm really to figure out what the differences are besides the actual hardware of the SSD.

The big difference is this, PS5 can DMA the entire 825gb of it’s SSD (It has a custom DMA chip and one of the 2 Coprocessors is used for direct access to SSD storage and indeed is designed around that concept). The Xsex can DMA 100gb - everything outside of that 100gb will need to be paged into the 100gb or accessed more slowly.

Once you understand that, the XVA stuff makes sense - particularly directstorage that is the code handling this stuff.

For Xsex, everything outside the 100gb will have to be paged into the 100gb for Direct access (virtual memory as MS called it) outside of that is presumably a normal file system lookup and is slower as a result.

In order to optimise that, MS need compression and other techniques to avoid games running out of storage which will slow them down as stuff is paged from outside the 100gb region. They’ll also need developers to optimisetheir games for that storage paradigm.

I read somewhere that the xb1 bc demo uses about 40gb for a single game save state. So you could only have quick switchable 2.5 games before needing to take the extra time to transfer data from the rest of the SSD. Presumably next gen games will be more than 40gb.

EDIT : I should point out this is based on what we currently know about the systems. Cerny’s presentation, the comments from Sweeney and MS’s article about 100gb directly being available implying the rest isn’t, and using directstorage to limit the cpu hit of storage transfer.

Everytime I read here or in another place SFS will improve the memory for 3x times or higher, I think this:

- SFS is the best thing ever happen to the memory
- Yes it is good they improve that last solution because you know this far of be new, right ?
- This is new they told us
- Not exactly a similar solution appears in since the generation of Xbox 360 and PS3 was use for ID software for use megatextures
and after this gen both consoles announced as part of its API PS4 called 'Partially Resident Textures' and Xbox One 'Tiled Resources'
-But they announced this will decrement in almost 3x times or higher the use of memory
-Yeah that is not true because first we already have a similar technology, second you are thinking Play didn't improve it in 7 years and actually
you cannot use every time
-You only hate Xbox of course they can use
-They said not me, this is just an improvement and actually already GPU of NVIDIA are compatible so yeah is not so exclusive

But hey is not like Xbox lied the spec sheet they just forget in which year they live and what technologies exists and its limitations.

Know something funny the guy MixterMedia of whatever is called said in 2014 the solution of Xbox one was 100 to 1 compare to PS4, yeah sure.

I'm not sure, guys, I want solid evidence from Epic Games that this isn't native 4K. It's probably the 8K assets deceiving me, but my vision, thank God, is pretty sharp. If put side by side with so-called 4K of the same spot, maybe, but that haze is in the game. I can see some artifacts (around the main character, bats, and some areas related to LUMEN) here and there but overall it's extremely sharp at 4K.

My screenshots: (better do them as static as possible because any slight movement adds blur)

Who the fuck is saying this is not 4K? Especially 1440p which is way off 4K!

"I noticed it isn’t running in native 4k, as per Digital Foundry. It looked great but I found this odd. Especially for a tech demo. The Xbox Series X has more teraflops but I’m not sure it has enough to run this demo at 4K. I was expecting all games to run at 4K on next gen consoles. Didn’t people make a fuss when the Xbox 360 didn’t run games at 1080p? Well we will see in the coming months but maybe these aren’t 4K boxes after all."

Well, Digital Fuckery doing the usual. I think they got confused by the artifacts caused by GI software based ray tracing, but no way this is not native 4K or close to it. I made those screenshots as some uploaded some non-4K screenshots that might confuse the rest. You need a 4K TV or monitor to extract 4K screenshots. Now, with any screen you can zoom in and tell by yourself.

By the way, I uploaded once a 3.7GB of 5 minutes gets compressed to only 150MB on Youtube! And that's talking about 8-bit ~100MB bitrate not 10-bit or raw 12-bit. This video is around 980MB, and it's quite dense, so I can say that it should be around 23.5GB if it was 8-Bit, which is not, it's 10-bit or higher, 12-bit. You can see how heavily it's been compressed.

They've been clear from start. It renders at 1440p30, is upscaled to 4K, AA is using a temporal filter.

I actually can't, my internet connection is only 16Mbps ADSL and 4K@30fps of heavily compressed youtube video is my limit. Even one frame isn't loading. Need to upgrade to fiber optics as soon as it's ready, they're digging now around the neighborhood :messenger_winking_tongue:

I sometimes wonder if it's the difference in marketing culture between the US and Japan.
As an outsider from across the pond, American adverts tend to be* big, brash and all about power.

* or at least seem to be
I'd say it's quite an issue but it's also difficult to discuss online because people can misunderstand you easily and stick a racist or homophobic label to the ideas. I come from a culture which is even further away from American than yours. We're more direct, we say what we think, which usually means trouble but that's another thing. However, bragging is considered rude, as well as exaggeration. If a company says that their thing is "the best in the world", I instantly raise my brow. Xbox is exactly that: they shout "12 TF" and then show indie games and teasers of projects that have barely started. This won't buy them a lot of support in countries with different cultural backgrounds. And they don't seem to comprehend the problem, hence 22% of the market (latest data). Basically, Xbox sells in their own country and a bit in other English speaking ones. Is that a way to go for a worldwide company? I don't think so.

And this one is insanely expensive starting at $220 for 128GB
Insanely? Search for Sony Pro cards which are used in broadcast-grade cameras. This 512 GB AXDS card is $2500.

Except in 3-4 years when games begin to push the CPUs and there is no power budget to steal.
In 3-4 years games might reach 70-80% of theoretical TF peaks. There will be plenty of room left for skilled devs. The rest of what you wrote is wrong because of that.

The question is who I almost sure is Sony the reasons:

1)Xbox has the game Medium so they probably know that will happens for this reasons this game will exists
Seriously, man... Don't compare Bloober Team to Konami. It's really not the same league. Have you played their Blair Witch Project game?

UE4's Nanite is literally what SFS was made for.
Its atleast 20% better than Kraken
I see we have another astrowarrior. A quick look at registration time and post history... Yep, so easy to spot.

Sony just dropped this gigantic, intelligent library/archive. Would they have a jump in a new SSD architecture for the PC market? If someone is arguing that it doesn't produce NAND or other modules, we all know that big companies share supplies, no 100% independent company out there:

Been hearing about this lately. Possible that Sony could get In this business, Wouldn't doubt it we started seeing high end SSD's from Sony a few years from now.

Never move to a place without fiber. When I heard about 10 years ago that many parts of London were still with 10MB connections I was like… what’s even the point of living there?

A regular team is better than not existing team anymore, Konami is not the same than before, I said that of SIlent HIll because is obvious Xbox wants to
use the name of Akira Yamaoka composer of Silent Hill, they usually did similar things like when they did it with Recore when use the name of Mark Pacini
as his was the director of Metroid Prime ..... Recore well that still hurts.

Wonder if Sony or MS will change some specs before release?

For MS I could see them increasing the GPU clock some. Kinda hoping they get the ram bandwidth to be the same across the board.

As for Sony, I think something will happen with the ram. Thought it was odd Cerny didn’t mention how much Ram is reserved for the OS. Is it because there is a chunk of slower ram being used for the OS meaning all 16 gigs of the announced ram is for games? Or maybe they still haven’t decided what the OS footprint will be.

Console warrior bullshit to one side

I am seeing many people saying the ps5 downclocks from 10tf which sounds like the most retarded thing as pretty much every computer device upclocks

But the official ps4 blog states Varaible up to 10tf meaning its base is probably 9tf and it will uplock under load

Anyone able to shed some light?
According to Cerny (the "Road to PlayStation 5" video), CPU and GPU have a fixed power consumption in common and they ping back at each other for who runs at 100% and who doesn't according to the situation. He also noted that the scalability between power consumption and clock speed is not linear, and neither should slow down by more than "a couple percentages" in the overwhelming majority of cases.

This means that, if at any given moment the CPU really needs every possible ounce of power, the GPU could realistically lose 2-4% of power, or the other way around.

It's also worth noting though that in most cases this won't be a "set" situation for a particular game or scenario, but rather continuous fluctuations that will happen at a frame or sub-frame frequency. So it's not like game X runs at 100% CPU and 95% GPU, but rather each individual frame of rendering might push one or the other a bit more.

Thanks a lot, man! Those 8K assets gave you illusion of native 4K with "haze" to mask it. It's not as razor sharp nor feels like even 1440p of current gen.

Just wow, if that's a 1440p, how insanely sharp it'll be at native 4K! They're already working for a solid 60fps, which translates to 4K@30fps. And RT implementation should help with the performance with same mild usage.

Ultimately, it’s all just horse race stuff until we start seeing real games. It’s possible that one of these two platform holders will bring out some fancy stuff for launch, but I’m really not expecting to see anything that looks fundamentally different from current gen until holiday 2021 at the earliest, and maybe not until 2022. I could be wrong, but console launches start slow and there’s no reason to believe this one will buck that trend.

i think he is right and we will not get a “proper” next gen games until 2021

You are wrongly conflating the GPU analysis of workload and then variable clock to reduce heat with smartshift - like so many others have. I really think Cerny should have just left the irrelevant part about smartshift out of the presentation as it completely hampers people appreciating the paradigm shift they've done with power draw, thermal latency and performance.

A very interesting tech released by Sony 4 days ago. Could it be implemented for PSVR2? Or a new AI cam compatible with PS5? Sony still flexing with stacked sensors:

BGs BGs only let us know about it if it's not under NDA. Thanks

I don't know if I understood your question well.

Do you really want to know if PSVR2 will carry that chip? Or if it will be wireless based on it?

In reference to the first, I do not know.

YouTube says 4K.

I have no idea how to tell which it is.
Download "4K video downloader", you can download videos from yt and vimeo in all qualities.
That Unreal 5 demo video is ~900mb(webm) for 4k from YT and ~1.3gb(mp4) for 4k from vimeo

All depends when some place like Digital Foundry says they have to find other ways to compare games between the two consoles that tells me the games are going to be super close graphics wise.

Does it even matter? Those trying to convince the rest they are buying a XSX because of 15% to 18% in theoretical TFLOPs are waisting their time lying to themselves. They are buying Xbox because it’s Xbox and that’s perfectly valid.

After U5 the power narrative is dead. Differences in third party would have to be big at this point, but considering two are as close we’ve ever gotten, doesn’t seem likely that will happen. Worse, there’s a possibility first party PS5 pulls ahead straight away because they don’t have to concern themselves with the Ps4.....

What you're showing is a gif demonstrating frustum culling, a technique which does not save memory.

I know what that is. I'm using it as an example to showcase how things are loaded until Epic releases their own visualizations.

For nanite to work, any assets that are not onscreen are removed from memory.

This is simply not true. Virtual textures do not work like this. Nanite has a tile cache just like virtual textures. That way if the camera shifts slightly you already have most of the tiles you need.

We know we're not streaming 5.5gb/s at a constant rate, that doesnt mean the speed isnt important.
hear me out: we know the 33 million poly statue is about 600mb. what if you had that, as well as a 600mb environment right behind you? If you were to turn around, and turning the camera around takes 1/4 of a second, Those 1.2gb would need to be loaded in 1/4 of a second.
Requiring a minimum IO speed of 4.8GB/S

Again nanite doesn't ditch everything as you move your camera. It has a tile cache.
Secondly that 33 mill poly statue IS AN INSTANCE MESH. Using the same textures.

PS5 is completely different from the old way of running games that you described above.

No longer is it bound to loading a huge amount of assets in advance aka load screens, it is now fast enough to stream content every second you move and yes it is constant even for the memory as can be seen below.

The PS5 is completely centred around streaming and all bottlenecks were said to be addressed such as adding Cache Scrubbers to the GPU so it too can keep up with the constant changes in streaming.

This is a brand new architecture for gaming and a lot of people don't seem to get that.
