Tencent is starting a AAA studio in North America

EA and Ubisoft veteran Scott Warner will be studio director for Tencent's first AAA operation in the US

Tencent is setting up a new AAA studio in North America, bringing in veteran developer Scott Warner to lead the operation.

Warner has an impressive track record in AAA: he was design director on Halo 4 at 343 Industries, game director on Battlefield Hardline at EA Visceral, and was most recently game director for Ubisoft in the San Francisco Bay Area.

"I am moving on to a new role," Warner said, announcing his departure from Ubisoft on Twitter. "I'll be the studio director of a new AAA operation in North America for Tencent."

The location of the new studio has not yet been decided, with Warner stating that it "might be Seattle, might be Los Angeles."

Tencent is the biggest games publisher in the world by revenue, but its growth outside of China has largely been fuelled by acquisitions -- Supercell and Riot Games, for example.

This move is one of Tencent's first attempts to start an internal AAA studio from scratch.

Weird news. You can be scared because it's chinas strongest financial arm reaching out or you can see it as a possible connection to bring together cultures that are too distanced right now. Intercultural influence always goes both directions.

Does anyone else just picture Tencent as some huge, evil communist company? I picture their NA building being completely red, with black banners and Chinese guards in full military clothes pacing the parking lot.

Definitely option A.

I'm happy if it isn't a free to play games or pay to win or GaaS or you name it

I don't think halo 4 design director is that impressive though, let alone battlefield hardline, a game I barely knows

Scott Warner is way too common of a name, when I just googled Scott Warner the first hit I got was "...jailed for four-and-a-half years for stealing cars" :messenger_face_screaming:

The location of the new studio has not yet been decided, with Warner stating that it "might be Seattle, might be Los Angeles."
So at the moment Tencent USA is not even having business cards?

That is quite selective, here a bit more complete list of Tencent involvement:
Wikipedia article on Tencent said:
Among its known investments, as of February 2020, include:
They are having their fingers in very many pies.

Fuck China and fuck anyone that works for Ten Cent.

Free Hong Kong.
This is gaming, not politics. Also, see above, you'd fuck quite a lot of people.

Its only a matter of time before they buy a bunch of companies and make a console. I predict they will launch a console in the gen after series x and ps5
And if you think I'm buying a console from the Chinkies "FUCK THAT SHIT" no matter how cheap it is.

I am okay with it as long as Tencent's Studio is NOT influenced by the CCP (which I doubt). Hopefully the US Government are watching them like a Hawk.

I heard the game is called “Massacre in the 100 acre wood” and it’s an open world stealth action game where your objective is to murder Winnie the Pooh.

Full disclosure, I taught English in Shenzhen from 2017-2019. I had students from Ten Cent learning English where I worked.

They are worked like dogs. It is not a happy place to work at.

The 9-9-6 stereotype of China (9am-9pm, 6 days a week) is real.

They are as ubiquitous in China as Google is in NA. Neither of these is a good thing.

Not sure how to feel about this at all. It's generally exciting to know about more studios coming to light.

But this... This is different. :|

With the software knowledge of Epic, the Unreal engine and the financial resource of Tencent, what is stopping them from releasing a cheap as chips console?

Yet another reason to stockpile current and past games and prepare for the coming apocalypse! Let the backlog hit the ceiling!

..it's more fun than saving for retirement. Besides, what would be the point of retiring if you didn't have video games to play?
