Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

On the Xbox One, this works with discs as well. So you could pick up a stack of old games on Craigslist and pop them into your console and start playing them with enhanced graphics and upgrades. I assume the Series X will do the same.

i think it was something like you have discs so they let you donwload game , no ? because you need to have that full game in your console , no ? this wont be so easy , imagine that your old discs are scratched and all, how you will read them . old games wont be playable just from disc , they need to be in console and then load from there i think.

Believe you still need the disc, even if it downloads the updated fully digital game.
Still does disc check at startup
This is correct. But I've seen a lot of success stories from people who's discs are scratched all to hell but still work well enough to pass validation, which essentially means these games are "digitally revived".

When was the last time your disc was so scratched the console couldn't read it ? This isn't the PS1 era anymore.

basicly it reads a portion of the disc and downloads the game onto the console. you need the disc in the drive when playing it to prove you still own the game. the game works off the hard drive

Red Dead Redemption in HDR at 60hz or 120hz. Yes, please!

hell yes

You could argue their version couldn't be realized by the lack of color depth.

Correct, but unless the patch every game manually (it would explain why they say some games get the framerate improvement and perhaps also only some games get the auto HDR improvement... the OP title omits that “some” bit), the only way it works is like your HDTV auto HDR post process filter... even with a bit more data than the final frame alone, they can’t create shadow detail out of nothing... ML reconstruction? Maybe...

What annoys me is they put all this effort into the Mass Effect games at the beginning and then didn't bother to increase the resolution. Backwards compatibility means very little when the games look like shit. 720p on a 4k screen is a no go.

some of these games will probably get ai upscaling

Interesting, so it is machine learning based on the final image output image + the game’s internal data extracting extra data to allow the inverse tone mapper AI:

So, it should be quite a bit better than what the TV does with its automatic filter, but not as well as a game designed for HDR. Still, it depends how many games they used to train it so it could be better over time as they update the software if they do update it (which I hope they do).

Lol I already know. Just find it funny posting a prototype demo to prove what exactly? I'm pretty sure neither MS or Sony will have anything on that scale and be that visibly impressive at launch. I'll have to see what Halo infinite looks like first through gameplay but as of now I'm not expecting to be wowed at launch.

MICROSOFT:
"You dont have seen the power of next gen yet"

ALSO MICROSOFT:
"We are adding more fps/HDR to current gen games"

MEANWHILE SONY:

I mean, you dont wanna start...

So having old games from day 1 to play with huge improvements is bad thing? Shit..! I need to delete my Steam-account before RTX 3000-series arrive because old games can't benefit from new hardware!

I have a question .. dose AI upscaling require special hardware ''like tensor cores'' or it can be done without it ?
if no .. does the XS have the required hardware ?

HDR is absolutely rubbish, I have mine turned off. I prefer the bold, clean vibrant look of non HDR 4K than the very bright slightly washed out look of HDR 4K.

I always fancied another play through Remember Me. I remember it was quite a good looking game as well, should look nice with HDR.

i dont understand how they are marketing this thing

You want to do a proper marketing? tell us the fucking price and when can we preorder. with the price, tell us the games coming day 1 and why this system is worth the purchase. not release info about it every 2 or 3 weeks by the time we get to hear something new, we would forget what the old news was.

Do a proper marketing that leaves a mark for people to talk about. not a fucking twitter that has probably 10000 likes and thats it.

no wonder why they fucking up to sony.

...lacks reading comprehension.
So if a game goes from 30 to 60, will the controls be twice as responsive (60 fps input on controls),. That would be great.

However, 60 FPS display with interpolation and 30 FPS control inputs totally defeats the main benefit for 60 FPS for me, fluid control.

I need to see more detailed information.

Yikes so double the frame rate for the display of the game, but the inputs from conroler stay the same ? So the core game still runs at 30 ?

If my character still feels slow to react to joystick inputs = thats fucking pointless.

Games need to RUN at 60 FPS so you can feel it when playing, not the display FFS.

Does anyone know if the control with be 60 FPS input ?
He is wrong. If it was just interpolation it would work with every game, like many TVs do. The fact that it is only for select titles is strong evidence that they are in fact doubling game performance.

I can't imagine that hdr will look good for a lot of games, most likely be a lot like rdr2s implementation, half baked.
Either way some games will likely look pretty damn good and the fact you have that option is great!
The days of orphaning your purchases from gen to gen should die in a fire.
Most games for the past decade were actually built for HDR and are converted to standard RGB. All the assets use the full color range, enabling it is pretty simple.

That whole article is just a great read for anyone who, like me, values backwards compatibility.

Xbox are simply knocking it out of the park with BC. It's great to hear even more confirmation that they remain committed & this will continue into next gen.

For example, automatic system level implementation of HDR? Yes please, thank you. I feel another run through the Mass Effect trilogy will be in order once I get the Series X.
Mass Effect with HDR and stable 60fps frame rates? Hell yeah. uch a shame that I sold all my 360 discs but I'd work something out
OMG the Bioshock trilogy at 60 fps with HDR?

dude... if they're able to get all past gen games to run at 60-120fps it's fucking over for Sony. I'm a Sony pony till I die but that's just too fucking good to pass up for most gamers. I'll be heading back to PC for my main platform and get a PS5 at a later time but I see Sony losing a ton of sales to the XSX if they can't compete.

Yes, because we know exactly what the PS5 costs and what games are coming day 1. Please.

It's only 'simple' if you have access to full source code as at minimum you need to replace the tone-mapping step in the pipeline with something that still outputs HDR.
There's no system-level methods to do that - and the announced BC method obviously works with standard RGB output as they use it for legacy XB games as well.

One has the marketing lead by far and has big studios to support it. The other is the underdog that is just talking big from the corner far away . Which one you think will need to actually prove them selves more ?

you didn’t get a hint when Sony just showed the controller and it destroyed the internet and the existence of Xbox box unvealing ?

for once at least MS has a clear advantage over Sony in terms of specs it’s not even funny to compare. Use that with proper game announcement that will blow people away . Announce the price already both of them are in the 400 to 500$ range .
I am not against Xbox and I already have money on the side for both Xbox and PlayStation because I think I am done upgrading my pc . I find it that both consoles probably will be cheaper than one 3080 and I won’t have to worry about missing exclusives from both sides .

Highly doubt Sony is sweating lol. If they thought it was a game changer they would go through such lengths as MS.

And you will be totally wrong as you watch Sony dominate in sales again. Ps4 had no bc this gen and we saw what happened (total domination) and they will have bc this coming gen with upgrades as well. Bc isn't as big as a concern for most ppl outside our enthusiasts bubble.

Plus all the other cool shit ppl want the PS5 for. But hey enjoy what you like thts why there are options 😊 Me?? I'm waiting for those 🔥🔥new game announcements and sequels to goty games I know will be coming to ps5, thts what I care about the most. BC is good and Sony will have BC too but it is not the main reason most buy new consoles.

This is a fair analysis so thank you for the follow up. I feel like Xbox's marketing push has been pretty substantial though - I even saw some Series X commercials on the big screen here in the US (before all the theaters were shut down). Microsoft is also aggressively marketing Game Pass, XCloud streaming, and their all-access plan that includes subsidized hardware costs in favor of monthly payments which will make their console more accessible by removing a lot of the upfront costs.

During the company's latest financial call, as reported by journalist Takashi Mochizuki, chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki was asked: "Some say PS5 promotion is falling behind Xbox. Would you give passing score to what PS team has done?"

Totoki replied: "We consider things strategically but doing our best. As for pass or fail, I would wait for PS5 sales to make that judgement." In other words, Sony isn't really interested in clashing with Xbox in terms of marketing -- the proof will be in the pudding.

Even tech journos are asking Sony about not having as much promotion as Xbox. I personally like both company's approach and will probably also be buying both systems, but a lot of people won't be able to or won't want to.
