you still need to preload a lot of assets to change location like that
of course it was never going to be real time, that's too much data to just call on screen in an instant, but it's definitely not something that is possible to do on present consoles, not on that scale at least

That's not the issue. The question is whether that's something the Xbox's SSD couldn't do let alone a standard SATA SSD that's in most computers that was already many times faster than the fastest HDD in the first place.

Um if you watched it.. They used a pink/purple interdimensional sphere to hide the transition between locations. It was NOT instant nor even close.

Infact none of the glass shards in the space even showed what the next space would look like. Watch the video again.
That's pretty much instant to me. Completely different to last gen when takes more than 10 seconds to load a new planet.

WTF is up with the lack of multiplayer titles?

Every game was a single player "push up on left joystick" type game. How does Sony not invest in multiplayer games/studios after witnessing the Battle Royale explosion in 2017/2018.
Where are MS and Nintendo's successful BR games? The fact is, 3rd parties make better multiplayer games than the first party studios are able to.

More succinct than your previous reply, equally worthless. I still love you though.
love you too man, never the less, excited for both consoles, gotta admit I'm a bit sad with this ps5 event but I know their big dogs are already in the works for some spectacular IPs

I don't buy the notion that a certain business classification of developers is better at making a game type than another class.

Fortnite Save the World was made by 100 developers.

Fortnite Battle Royale was made by 11 of those employees in 7 weeks.

I'm pretty sure Sony could find a lot of success in that space. The lack of variety was insulting.

Nothing Sony showed today looked like it was taking advantage of some crazy innovative never seen before SSD.

I expect every game, even the exclusives to run better on Series X hardware specs.

The bad news is for all of us. The biggest thing now I know: XSX will also look like a shinier version of this gen. There will be nothing magic that a meager 2TF difference over PS5, when a 6TF advantage over PS4 PRO was barely apparent.

Ratchet was really cool tho I'm not sure how different the scenarios were but still looked very slick and fast, I'd like a tech analysis.

The opposite.
Eu notified how games are choosing more fast movements without have LOD issues and that is an advantaged of faster SSDs.

The Racket Clack clearly chowed changing in environment without loadtimes too.

You need more gameplay data from the others games to reach a conclusion.

I posted this in another thread, but it's hard to be sad. From what they've shown, I'm interested in:

Ghostwire Tokyo (Quirky Japanese FPS...and I hate FPS)
Astro Bot (VR aside and a tad simplistic mechanically, the first Astro Bot a very tight controlling 3D platformer)
Oddworld
GT7
Spider Man: Miles Morales
Demon Souls Remaster (return of the king)
Kena (lovely character designs)
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (always good to great)
Hitman 3 (probably cross-gen)
REVIII (a little iffy but they've been on a roll with RE)
Pragmata

Sony could have done more to showcase the "special sauce" but in reality it's going to help games load faster and hopefully help slow down game sizes ballooning again this generation (though we should expect them to get bigger).

So I can't help but wonder based on what we've seen today, which one of these games show off what the SSD can do. I thought maybe the closest one was Ratchet and Clank with the dimensional portal thing, but I was really hoping they'd dive deeper into what the SSD is actually doing for these games. Did I miss something that maybe some of you caught?

The visual fidelity of the cut scenes.

Other than that, not sure. Probably just overall loading times.

GUYS HONESTLY.

You cant see what the SSD brings, if you just want games to be the prettiest they can go with Xbox. You cant see how an open world would work in PS5 via video. You cant really know if R&C seamless transitions really were planned or it was the ssd. You cant understand the difference until you see the entire game and how its designed. That will never happen in a 5 minutes video.

No way the Series X is doing Ratchet & Clank's dimension portals. We'll have to see more gameplay to tell about the other games. For example I can pretty much guarantee you that you'll be able to ride flying dinosaurs in Horizon at a speed that wouldn't be possible on the Series X, and the world density in Spider-Man will likely be more than the Series X could handle.

yeah it was good in general but not for me personally, I'm more of a triple A gamer, I only expect the big guns and new big games in this events, with some smaller games in exception, I was expecting specially with GT7 a bigger leap, it just looks like GT Sport with RT reflections in some areas, but anyway they did a better decision in achieving 120FPS rather then just looks.

Horizon 2 I cant say it looks impressive since that wasn't gameplay, just in engine trailer, Spider Man need to see more, it looked good, but nothing that wowed me you know? But I'm not dissing on PS, I still think its 1 of the 2 titans in game market, this was just an event, and more will be shown in the following months.

Yeah Bioshock Infinite also could do this without a ssd. R&D kinda looked messy.

Of course R&C didn't invent the concept. It will be curious to see the final implementation.

I think if you expected Sony's drive solution to somehow make up for the gap between PS5 and Series X, you'll be disappointed. While it might not be as fast in that area, Series X also has access to very fast storage so it can probably pull off a lot of these tricks too. That's a very positive thing in general as it increases the likelihood of 3rd party developers taking advantage of the feature.

Horizon underwater gameplay. It didn't compromise on the details and texture fidelity. Above water and under water is like entering another world yet the underwater is full of life.

If this game has a flying robot that you can hack and use to fly everywhere then that would be one too.

We have to see more of the games that were shown today.

It's still early, but Ratchet and Clank were fucking nuts. You literally can't do that with today's hardware - They're loading different levels live.

Obviously Horizon showed a lot of the detail as well, how many you can load at once.

I'm not a huge fan of Guerrilla game mechanically, but they generally deliver the goods from a technical standpoint and probably are a good indicator of what these machines can achieve. GT Sport already looks fantastic and if they improve the LOD (though I think I did notice the lights in the tunnel pop in rather aggressively in the trailer), resolution and frame rate....and most importantly deliver it in the beginning of the generation then I'm good.

In general, I'm not sure the wow factor is there anymore for me visually. Most games these days look really good. I'd rather the focus be on performance.

I personally don't think anyone in here would really be able to tell. Unfortunately we are all pretty basic. We recognize Visuals the most, that's the number one thing, that's what it always boils down to. What people are judging, PS4PRO/OneX to REAL LIFE. Does it look like REAL LIFE, no. We're not getting real life anytime soon. People say it time and time again, diminishing returns.

I couldn't tell you what I would look for to showoff the SSD. Even during the UE5 demo when they were explain things, to me it just looked great and I was impressed. Something with the games I saw today here. I can't explain why exactly, but they just did. We're honestly going to need a dev to tell us what's so impressive about the games we see next get, the stuff happening in the background.

The only certainty I stated was that Ratchet and Clank couldn't be done on the Series X and I stand by that. The PS5 can stream data ~80% faster than the Series X. The dimension portal features would take too long to do and be as tightly integrated into gameplay as it was. How do I know? Because it is clear as day that Sony is doing the portals to show off the PS5 I/O speed, so they will be pushing it to the max. You simply won't be able to take away that 80% I/O speed advantage the PS5 has, and still be able to do it.

As for everything else, I stand by the fact that they are highly likely. Both Spider-Man and Horizon devs have mentioned features they had to cut or could not do because of bandwidth. Flying in Horizon, and seamless transition between inside and out for Spider-Man. It's all but guaranteed that the devs will push those features to the limit on the PS5. That's both because they already wanted to do it and Sony has an incentive to show off things the Series X can't do.
