NBA 2K21 will retail for $10 more on PS5 and Xbox Series X than current gen editions

Did Sony say that’s what they’re doing? So they aren’t doing a buy it once play it on both?

How can this work on the Xbox, Shouldn’t the Xbox one version work on series x
Sony hasnt said anything. I guess since cross-play didnt take off last time around. They know you cant force developers to give free upgrades.

You can definitely play your PS4 games on PS5. And Xbox One games on Xbox Series X. What is being talked about is PS4/XBO games having a free upgrade to PS5/XBSX games. Such as engine upgrades rather and just resolution bumps.

Was bound to happen. Despite all the pearl clutching, $60 made no sense and was the driver behind Loot Boxes across the industry to drive up ASP.

With lootboxes in the crosshairs, expect $70 to be the market standard.

If you honestly believe that raising the retail price will somehow curtail loot box, casino MTX bullshit then I have some beach front property in Arizona to sell you.

They will raise the price AND include all that bullshit. Because idiots keep lapping it up and whales/krakens keep getting addicted to the Skinner box consumables.

There was another thread about how the cost of making AAA games have grown tremendously, and this could be an unfortunate consequence of that, that being next gen games are going to cost more. I hope it’s just a typo though lol

What happened to the fan friendly 2k Sports way back during the 360/PS3 era when they were sales underdogs?

Oh wait. NBA2k has been the dominate basketball game for probably 15 years and well look at that. Look whose the asshole when they got the dominant franchise.

This is going to increase physical ownership and trading/reselling.

Digital transition will definitely be slowed by $70 games. So uh.... thanks.

Not surprised at all and I'm actually surprised it took this long. I anticipate games being $70 next gen with more titles coming out at $40 and $50 at release.

I'll just keep playing 2k20 on my PC, until there's a sale. I don't see myself shelling out $70 for a game that gets a yearly refresh.

Mark my words. This gen $70 will be the MSRP across the board. The slightly cheaper games will be $50.

It's where the market is going. Everyone should get used to it.

Was it like that between previous gen and this one? As a film collector I clearly remember how Blu-rays were more expensive than DVD's and 4K UHD are now more expensive than Blu-rays.

There not gonna be that price for long.
Always at the start of the generation games are more expensive, then they come down. I remember when I first had to buy a Sega Saturn game... N64, PS2, PS3 and even PS4 was like £50-60 a game at launch...
Only the dreamcast didnt rob me at launch.
Prices will come down

Sports games in particular make zero sense to buy at launch.

Given that this game is a glorified roster update year over year, it’s idiotic to overly reward the dev for this shit. Which says nothing of how scummy the purposefully addictive casino loot box crap truly is. It’s despicable.

I still occasionally enjoy the single player season features, but the focus on draining money from the wallets of whales and their parents has meant that the areas of basketball simulations I care about haven’t been improved much if at all over the last several years.

So I haven’t paid more than $20 for any of the last 5 iterations going back to 2k16 because I just wait 6 months. It’s that easy. I paid $3 for 2k19. Hell I didn’t even buy 2k20 for Xbone this year bc it’s on GP. I did pick it up for Switch to play on the go. Paid $16 for it which is about what the game is actually worth.

XB1 version will work with XSX as an XB1 game.
PS4 version will work with PS5 as an PS4 game.

Seemingly 2K has made a next gen specific version. and are not offering a free upgrade. It is their right to do so. It is our right to not buy them.

I’m not saying you’re wrong about them trying to establish a new higher retail price standard of $70.

But your earlier statement was conflating this move with microtransactions being “in the crosshairs”, which is what I took issue with.

What I’m saying you’re wrong about is that this has anything to do with MTX. It certainly has little to nothing to do with MTX being “in the crosshairs”. The largest consumer markets (namely the US especially when it comes to basketball and American football games) are going to do exactly two things about loot boxes/gambling mechanics: 1) jack and 2) shit.

People who think otherwise haven’t yet realized the USA is largely fascist at this point and consumers have no real protections.

So retail prices will be raised AND gambling casino bullshit will increasingly infest games, derail game design, rape consumers and convert those who are easily addicted into whales.

Not surprised at all and I'm actually surprised it took this long.

Same here, we had a good run at $59.99 for 15 years.

(Here's where I drop in my obligatory anecdote about paying $70 in 1995 for a 32x version of Virtua Fighter. Also, I had to walk uphill both ways to get to Sears to buy it.)

Visual Concepts can use extra revenue to design even more addictive microtransaction systems to vacuum up additional revenue from the underclass for shareholders. Also, black lives matter.

Fuck that lol. With how many games are launching broken these days I was already considering putting in place "no more day 1 buys" rule for myself and this would only push me further towards that if it's the new standard.

Companies will have to step up on their games quality if there's a price increase.

No more Anthems, Fallout 76s, AC Unitys and the like, right? =D

I'm wondering if this means digital versions will still have the premium. At launch games are ususally 45.99-49.99 physical and 54.99 on PSN. We're talking about 64.99 on digital and 54.99-59.99 physical 😲 😲

Let's see what the rest of the big publishers will do, 2K is among the greediest ones so it doesn't have to mean anything. ;)

If this is actually going be the case, then I'll definitely think about not buying any full priced games on launch (even now for me it's only a few per year).

I think $70 will be the new MSRP this gen, at least for retail.

This is concerning, but I figured it would happen at some point.

The good news is that so many games are being developed with different scopes and play styles in mind. We should continue to see many $10 and $20 games (mostly as digital downloads) along with the $70 games.

I think paying 10 dollars to upgrade your PS4 copy into a PS5 copy is fair.

This is similar to what a few games (e.g. Assassins' Creed IV) did during the last generational transition 7 years ago. This might happen with NBA 2K21 also, but a lot of people were hoping for free upgrades like some other games have announced.

Sony hasnt said anything. I guess since cross-play didnt take off last time around. They know you cant force developers to give free upgrades.

Huh? Cross-play certainly is taking off.

While you can't force developers to give free upgrades, some of them are choosing to do so anyway. Consumers will be mindful of which developers are doing this and which ones aren't.

There had better be a substantial difference between the versions for old systems and the versions for new systems, to justify the $10 price difference. If there isn't a major difference, then the PS4 and Xbox One versions should be playable on their successor systems anyway, so that's always an option.

Come to think of it...could a developer or publisher choose to opt out of backward compatibility for a particular game? Could they declare that their game is not playable on the new system, not because of technical difficulties with emulation or performance, but "just because"? If so, that could usher in an ugly new era of consumer unfriendly practices.

Straight up barf. And this game is going to have the casino too, because reasons. No reason for it to lead the charge of $70 games. I hope we get legislation in place soon to outlaw the lootboxes before it launches.

The one’s that are choosing to are basically giving you the same game with two settings unlocked. Such as dynamic resolution and higher capped framerate. No difference in textures, effects, etc. Forcing the precedent of free upgrades will make publishers put no effort in next gen upgrades. Its better if they charge 10$ to upgrade. If you dont find the upgrade worth it, you just play the PS4 version on PS5.

Publisher cant opt out. Since you have a license to a digital copy. Its Sony Job to make the license compatible with their system, but aren’t required.

If there is no difference between the current gen and next gen versions then I don't think it's fair to charge another $10. I'd rather just buy the current gen version then play it on next gen later. But, I am expecting the base price of games to be at least $70 for next gen. I mean would you be surprised? Video game prices have stayed at $60 for a long time now, I frankly don't know how they've staved off inflation for so long. Everything else in our lives has gone up in price, so I'm not shocked at all.

NBA 2k21 next-gen is being built from the ground up for next-gen, it's not a cross-gen game. I'm sure Madden and Fifa are cross-gen. I'm big NBA fan so I'll rent it from Gamefly and keep for a discount.

It better have specific features on those consoles then. I don't have an issue if games go up generally as I think they last a long time, bu tI hate the way they just nonchalantly try and slide it in instead of communicating with it. Also how does it affect smart delivery?

Smart delivery is marketing.

You play the current-gen version via back compact, but if you want the next-gen visuals you'll need to pay $70.

I’m always skeptical of the first release on new hardware, there’s no chance 2k will truly take advantage of the hardware in the first release.

Add in the fact that MyPlayer is pay to win and 2k rakes is cash because of it, this is pretty greedy of them.

I’ll wait for a sale and I buy this game every year, I guess at least you get the last gen version with purchase. NBA Live where are you???!!!

Games like this are shite and worth £40 max whereas some games, like GoW, TLOU2 and Bloodborne are worth £100. It was always a matter of time before game prices would rise. Sucks to see the price of shite games increasing though.

Not gonna lie, a 10 dollar hike per game will definitely make me reconsider being an early adopter next gen. I barely feel like I'm getting 60 bucks enjoyment from games this gen let alone MORE money for the same old crap. Would be nice if it didn't seem like brick and mortar are having their selections shrunk to push more towards only digital options as I think people would be smart to just wait for Target/Best Buy/Wal Mart sales if they raise this across the board.

Funny thing is that you can pre-order 2K21 from xbox store (Chech region) for 7.6$. Possibly this is a listing error. So anyone interested go for it before they fix it

Video Games are still the best bang for your buck hobby ever. Period.

For those who need to then wait : I grabbed Kingdom Hearts 3, Gears of War 5 and Borderlands 3 for $32 total shipped just last week from BestBuy.
