Disconnected from Current Games

I just got promoted, so I thought I’d pose this question/topic:

My interest in new games has dropped to almost nil, with some exceptions. I don’t really have much of a connection to contemporary games, or perhaps gaming culture. Granted, I was never a multiplayer guy, but always-online gaming, GaaS, MTX, all these things don’t really seem like games. It feels like something to do. I like the Destiny series, even invested a few dozen hours into the first game, but now I come away thinking “that was a waste of time -I could be playing this game or that game.” Mainstream games really don’t interest me anymore.

I‘m not angry about it - there are so many great games from many different eras to play. It’s really not hard to find something you like. It’s just where the industry is now.

Does anyone else feel disconnected from current games?

Well what genres do you like? Maybe we can suggest some recent games you might not have heard of.

I'd be surprised if you couldn't find something you like with how many styles of games are being released these days.

Have you tried VR? It has rekindled the excitement for many jarred players. When I tried some games for the first time I almost cried.

I’ve been staying away from VR because I don’t invest new hardware at the moment. Also, I almost consider it to be a different medium. I have such a huge backlog of games that I’m not really compelled to try something “new.”

Again, I’m not angry or depressed about it. I just see announcements for the Next Best Thing and I just shrug my shoulders.

Might be setting them up for disappointment though. I got a little bit overhyped after I went to a VR arcade.

I mean, I'm playing Gris one day, then Far Cry New Dawn the next. Yesterday I finished the Spongebob remake and I started Axiom Verge this morning. Last week I played Wattam (lol) with my gf, and I Maneater before that. I just rebought the Descent trilogy and Overload for ~£10 combined.

I don't gaf about 99% of online gaming, which basically includes most GaaS, I play exclusively singleplayer games and there is near awesome variety.

What doesn't get you excited about contemporary games?

There are older games that do the same thing.

Fortnite and competitive e-sport multiplayer in general is a completely alien space to me, but other than that - no. I feel super connected and I'm just as excited for new releases as I was in the 90's.

What part of message were you answering?

edit - I realised what you meant sorry, so you are looking for new genres/game concepts that haven't been done before? What type of games do you generally like? I think we need a base to start with.

Hey, I’m just wondering if anyone else feels the same as me. I’m not saying new games are bad or evil. If you’re enjoying new games, fantastic. I can wait 🤷

I was the same too, until I forced myself to play online games. As someone in their 30's I never thought I could keep up. Now I can't stand most single player games. Shitty AI vs. having to outwit real humans...NO comparison.

I can see that. But I’m not really a competitive person when it comes to gaming.

I can wait to play the latest games . They’re not going anywhere (for the most part).

Cool, go and enjoy older games you like until you like modern games again then. Sorted.

But just to ask one more time, what do you even like in games? Are they not making genres you like anymore or something?

I felt like that when I first tried it, but now after having the PSVR for more than a year it's my main way to play games. The only TV games I still occasionally play are the very best ones and those that really interest me, but it's mostly VR now. It just makes the experience much more immersive and memorable.

It’s not that actually. It’s more of a backlog thing. There are so many great games I haven’t had a chance to play that I want to finish, and there isn’t anything new that seems to dissuade me from that.

For example, there are a slew of JPRGs from sixth and seventh gen I’d like to sink my teeth into (Digital Devil Saga, Suikoden series, Lost Odyssey).

Also, having a job makes it neigh impossible to keep up with the joneses.

I appreciate you all offering suggestions about what to play. I tend to keep up with gaming news so I kinda know what’s out there. But I’ll be sure to ask in the future.

Knowing some examples of which games you liked most might help in finding the reason why you don't like present games.
It might be because you saw many games and nothing is new to you, or maybe because you can't immerse yourself in gaming because of real life issue, or some other reason.
Personally I still like to game but I can't immerse myself into a game anymore as I used to do 10 years ago, because I feel like there are many other distractions now.

This is fine OP. Most modern games nowadays (that have online components) are made by a committee.

They are literally designed to be as addicting as possible. And they try their best to get you to buy meaningless cosmetics and other worthless items.

A lot of games are very clearly designed around this disgusting practice and it's painfully obvious for those who like to know what they are consuming.

The singular, cohesive vision of game design is unfortunately stamped out in today's modern society of instant gratification and overindulgence.

Games used to be designed for fun, by artists and designers who truly had a passion for what they are creating.

A lot of modern games nowadays are only made to make money.

So don't feel bad for not liking modern gaming. Yes there are some good ones out there... but they are choked out by trending titles filled with absolute time wasting garbage.

It’s not like the Virtual Boy just came out. There’s a much larger selection to choose from. You just have to stick with it. A big part of it is not comparing it to something. Look for fun from all the different generations of consoles.

A few years? I'll often sample new games a bit

What kind of real life issue?

I think you succinctly put the same sentiment I have about modern gaming.

When you are young your mind is totally free and you can enjoy games at their fullest.
It might not be the same when you get older though, when you have a lot of things in your mind and you might find it harder to immerse yourself.

Yes, having financial commitments does tend to reprioritize things in your life. But I still enjoy games.

I still follow modern games but I mostly look for arcade-like experiences.

Like, it has to be a game you can tell the developers put a lot of time in perfecting the gameplay and not just trying to sell you a crap-load of microtransactions or a boring story.

Luckily, I can still get my fix by following what a lot of Asian game studios pump out. Western ones I've almost ignored completely unless it's like a small studio or they bring back classics like Crash Bandicoot.

I don't think modern games in general are bad, it's just that Publishers aren't as risk heavy as they were during the 16-bit or even the early 3D eras.

What was the last game you genuinely enjoyed playing?

New game? Probably Vampyr. I recently replayed Prince of Persia Sands of time. What a wonderful, well designed game.

If I had to superficially pigeonhole my tastes, I tend to like well made AA games over AAA.

I can relate.

Have you taken a look at Nintendo? They don't really follow the trends, for better or worse. Off the top of my head I can't think of a single upcoming game I'm interested in outside of Nintendo stuff (unless they announce a new Nier or something). Just curious since we sound similar in some regards, not trying to push you one way or another.

New games not interesting you? Play old games.

Old games not interesting you? Return to a different hobby.

No other hobbies? Find one and go down that rabbit hole for a while.

I think the switch is brilliant. Waiting for the Pro version.

Pretty much, I know Gaf doesn't take kindly to this idea but man, it's okay to give up gaming if it doesn't give you enjoyment anymore.
