There is no Xbox 'Series S'

The "Optimized for Series X" stuff? Because those games have been.... Um... You know... Optimized for Series X.

As of right now we're not really supposed to know about Series S. So of course you're not seeing any mention of Series S. The time will come. I don't think they want to show it until after we see what games look like on the Series X next week on the 23rd. So we'll probably have to wait until August for the S.

I'm sure I'm going to catch some flack for this but so be it. They've already explained the Series X name and it's been easily understood for me since square one. It's a simple convention really if you look at it abstractly.

What was the Xbox One X relative to the Xbox One/S? It was the X SKU of the One branding, in that series of consoles it was the X. X is to Microsoft the peak of compute, design, there is nothing better, it is symbolic of power. The Xbox Series X is exactly that as well. It's not the implication of belonging to a literal series, it's the inference of it being the peak of design possibilities as a platform out of the gate.

Look at it this way, this is the Xbox One.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) S (SKU)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) X (SKU)
This is Series X.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) Series X (branding)

There is no Series S, Series X isn't a SKU, it's the generational branding and name of their next-gen platform. Series S is the result of people confusing what Series infers as a name on the back of the Xbox One, they're thinking of it literally as it relates to that platform rather than symbolically.

Requiring a 5 paragraph post to explain something which should be as basic as a name, says it all about how convoluted their naming convention is

also, simply abstract is one hell of an oxymoron

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
Xbox (platform) One X (model)
Xbox (platform) Series S (model)
Xbox (platform) Series X (model)

Xboxes are just PCs of varying power now. Not to mention, the 1X will be discontinued, so going forward they would only have one (probably quite expensive) model available. A budget option makes complete sense, regardless of what that actually means, whether it's just a weaker box, a digital only box, a streaming-only box, or whatever.

Their entire goal is to get people into the Xbox ecosystem and get them subscribed to Game Pass for as long as possible. That isn't going to happen when they put out one premium console and discontinue everything else. Series S makes perfect sense, it's just a shame that the naming conventions are so fucking bad.

Then why is it all over the digital pre-order pages for these games...

Because 'optimised for Xbox Series X' implies 4K as opposed to a resolution below that. Which is where the Xbox Series S comes in. I don't buy what you say at all.

This is taken from Business Insider
  • It was introduced as the "Xbox Series X," but the way that name was presented made it look like the console generation was actually just named "Xbox."
  • That is the case, Microsoft confirmed to Business Insider. The next-generation Xbox consoles are named "Xbox," starting with the Xbox Series X.
  • "The name we're carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox," a Microsoft representative told Business Insider, adding that "the name 'Xbox Series X' allows room for additional consoles in the future."

I love how this guy thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Looking forward to his reaction when Lockhart is officially revealed.

I think there will be, and Series S will the official successor to the Xbox One S.

Series X is more like the mid-gen Xbox One X, except that it's coming out early.

Here's some other names they could have used to make it more confusing:
  • Xbox Original
  • Old Xbox
  • Classic Xbox
  • XXboxx
  • Xbox Series 360
  • X-One-box
  • S-box X Series SX
  • Ecks-Bocks

I thought it's clear for everyone that "Series" is a placeholder - there will be a generation naming revealed later and there will be X and (most likely) S series of them - like Xbox Two X, Xbox Two S.
Apparently, not.

Until they reveal the generation naming publisher just use a placeholder on the covers sketches.

Because if "Series" really is the generational name - that's just stupid and crazy. And I think Microsoft is neither.

Lockhart is/was a very real console.

Is it still today remains to be seen.

I still think its coming at $299

I think it will be canned.. in the long run it will do more harm than good... August I think it will be the deadline for them to reveal it..

I’m really curious to see how they will be marketing this.. nextgen 0.5.?? So it be...

Xbox one and x - next gen 0.0
Xbox series s - next gen 0.5
Xbox series x - next gen 1.0

Yes it makes sense :pie_thinking:

Did people get confused between the Xbox One X and Xbox One S?

People who get confused with this naming are just looking at the price.

Which will be exactly the problem with One X and Lockhart presumably at the same price range, while being from 2 different generations.

Previously newer generations were just more expensive. Simple.

Not a place holder in any capacity.

They are running out of time. The Lockhart needed its own marketing, you can't just randomly introduce it and expect it to be accepted. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if the Microsoft Marketing make another critical mistake, at this point it is expected from them. But really, it is a big deal to release two completely different SKUs and this needed time to be digested.

Now REALTY is, most of NeoGaf are not interested in buying the Lockhart, so that is why so few Xbox supporters care about Lockhart not getting marketting time. They expect to sell the Lockhart for the "peasants". The whole point of supporting Lockhart is to justify Xbox selling an overpriced console. However, historically if you can't find many people actually willing to buy it but expect others to, you end up finding out that no one buys it.

Ok. English is not my mother tongue, but as I understand, the word "series" means that there's a lineup.

Both new consoles will be the second in this lineup after One X/One S.

And they are called Series.

And that makes sense in our universe.

Correct ?

Would you consider that marketing for Xbox Series X is in fall swing yet? Sure there's the Xbox website but i haven't seen anything on TV yet. Perhaps when Series S is officially revealed and the marketing does begin we'll see both consoles advertised together.

The One X is already being phased out. There won't be any on the shelves come Oct/Nov.

Another fact of reality that people are overlooking is this. They plan on supporting the Xbox One for a period of 12-24 months beyond the release of Series X.

How exactly does a 'Series S' slot into this? The Xbox One is their budget support line of hardware for games they will make available, it doesn't even have a place in the market. By the time they phase out the Xbox One the Series X would be in a position of more affordable options.

And to add to this even more they are pushing Xbox All Access hard for the Series X, making it affordable even for people who can't outright buy one.

'Series S' doesn't fit into anything they're doing, and the branding of the platform is already solidified. It's already case art.

I've been saying this for months, the series S does not make sense and I don't think it will be released this year for the reasons stated above.

The way people are talking about the series S, it seems it only exist for MS to have a low price which does not make sense when the Xbox One will still get 2 years of support and exist at a much lower price point.

I think the series S will be released once MS is ready to discontinue the Xbox one support and go all in on next gen.

Why would they want to sell you hardware that will lock you into their ecosystem for 2 years and not 6-10?

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
MS will come with a portable that does streaming too
This is my guess as well - it makes the most sense. I'm thinking it's a Switch-like device that's capable of playing all of the Series X (and BC) titles in lower res natively, but can also do XCloud streaming and probably has it's own screen for portable play.

Something like this:

But with better hardware that's designed specifically for gaming (rather than being a portable Windows PC) to squeeze out more performance. Rather than cannibalizing the Series X sales, it would be an alternative to the Switch or a way to sway PS5 owners into buying into the Xbox ecosystem as a second (portable) console. From a business perspective, it makes the most sense.

With xcloud I don't see a reason to release a dedicated handheld. Even though xcloud would be inferior their mobile strategy revovles around a client like their console strategy.

A dedicated piece of hardware would have dedicated buttons though which would be a huge advantage for most. You could also (potentially) hook it up to your TV ala the Switch, which again would serve Microsoft's purpose of selling consoles to people who might not consider it their "main system".

Just speculation on my part, and obviously the hardware would be moot for people with nice cell phones with big screens that don't mind using touch controls or pairing a bluetooth controller.

I think the advantages are obvious but the fact they are going so far as to let 8bitdo make controllers in effort to make xcloud feel less compromised to me signals and they value a bigger audience with less monetary investment for their mobile strategy.

A dedicated handheld from Xbox is as unlikely as the Smachz actually delivering a handheld , not happening .
I would love to be proven wrong but on both but the Smachz has been delayed so many years if they ever release the device now all the hardware will be outdated.
Smachz is a scam.
