Eurogamer: Microsoft still hasn't made the case for Xbox Series X

Most likely 1 later (or close too).

Don’t see Horizon releasing before Q3-2021, GT is most likely a 2022-2023 (at the earliest). I could see Ratchet and Clank releasing early 2021 (but due to COVID who knows) but that game doesn’t move systems.
I'm day 1 for 2 units.. but I know that I will enjoy Spider-man and Kena and several other games... I also want to play multiplats on it and my PS4 sounds like it will takeoff when playing games. So I have a lot of motivating factors....

Solid article. And just an observation I think people is underestimating Spider Morales and Insomniac. Every time they remember it as something just okay.

Yeah, the original sold 3.3 million in the first 3 days.... that is nearly the entire allocation of PS5's till christmas. It's only 5 million PS5's till December and another 5 million till March.... so, there's not going to be many available for 6 months at the very least.

What would be the point of game pass if the games being shown won't exist for years or looked awful, as in the case for Halo Infinite? How did this showcase sell anyone on getting gamepass?
Every game shown is available on the service?? Also other than maybe having dusty graphics Halo looks like fire.

The more I think about it, the more it seems clear that MS' reveal was a disaster. The big unveil turned into a meme, and everything else is really far out. I don't think MS could have done a worse job of selling the XSX. I also don't think the two were comparable in the slightest, Sony made a compelling case for the PS5 immediately, or, at the latest, mid 2021 ish.

It wasn't good. Now, they do have some projects that may land on their feet but it seems to me like there is no philosophy of project management....it just seems like a mess.

Flight sim looks great and Senua might be decent, I never played the first so can't speak to gameplay... but I don't know if this presentation reached anyone outside the people they already have.

Spencer is the reason people buy Xboxes, they really love him, he is some kind of diety to those in the cult, all they really want is to ear the promises and talk about gamepass.

His voice is very suiting.
That's... disconcerting. But it kind of makes sense. Still, these Xbox fans of today remind me of a house wife that defends her husband, despite the fact that he routinely beats her. Or maybe because of it.

Did MS ever say selling XSX was their major goal? They are doing things differently than the other console manufacturers. They had to create their own lane because no one can do what Nintendo and Sony do. Nintendo had to change once Sony came into the game too.

Hey Digital Foundry! Where is your video on the Halo footage? It's been a day.

This was posted literally one day later.

Well.

It's a toss up between them feeling genuinely bad for Microsoft, and weighing up their ad revenue for the next 7 years. Tough decision financially, but internally the heart wants what it wants.

I don't know who the guy is who keeps asking if it "[...] really doesn't matter if the games are only 30fps" during the Halo segment, but this is really him trying very hard to find something...lol, Halo is NO high velocity shooter, actually it is one of THE most static shooter in the world. A locked 30fps would not even be entirely bad if the graphics would pay respect to 12.1TF...so, please, don't make it too easy now for 343 to escape the argument via Open World / 60 FPS / Open World...

This is a console exclusives where optimization is to be expected. This is a 12.1 TF console with a freaking good CPU and tons of RAM and a very good I/O concept and you will really start the debate about that? It should be EASILY looking better than what we saw with 60fps and 4k with these specs. Sorry, but I am not going to agree on any rhethorical question-esque try hards to contradict that fact.

Try harder, please, try much much harder to explain anything that we saw.

They absolutely have not...but that's intentional. They are selling GamePass not the Series X. They don't care what platform you are playing their games on and they been saying this for nearly 4 years now. There is nothing coming out on Series X that is exclusive and thus there isn't much reason to purchase one. The target audience is the Xbox gamer who doesn't game on PC and prefers console. That audience exists but it's smaller than the typical console gaming audience.

Beside their overall strategy, what they have shown to date does very little to sell us on Series X hardware. I'm still at a loss of words on how bad that presentation was yesterday:
  • Halo looked completely last gen and looked worse than Halo 5 (especially on One X). Environment was so flat as in grass, lighting, animations etc. I'm shocked this is the state of the game with 4 months to go before launch
  • Forza 7 came out in 2017. So 3 years later all they can show is an in engine teaser with a message indicating the game is early in development? Really? Turn 10 has been pumping out Forza games every other year for many years. Now 3 years later, they cannot show any gameplay? What have they been doing for the past 3 years?
  • Generally, it's appalling how little gameplay we got from Xbox Game Studios. We got some gameplay from third parties i.e. Phantasy Star Online, Psychnauts 2, Medium, and few others. Why are MGS so far behind?
  • We still haven't directly seen Series X running a game live
  • Everything we saw looked like Xbox One caliber games...because they were! And that's the point. Series X will be just the same as playing them with a "high end" PC (i.e. higher resolution, faster loading, faster framerates, more detail images, same game designs!).
So why buy a Series X? To play current gen games at 4K/60 or beyond? Wait isn't that what the One X was already promised to deliver 3 years ago? Can't we already do that on One X or PC?

As a showcase of games coming to Xbox platform (i.e. Gamepass) yesterday was a solid presentation (still needed more gameplay).

But as a demonstration of Series X or what "next gen" gaming will be about, it failed about as hard as it possibly could!

This is the PC model of hardware upgrades in full effect but it kind of goes against what made consoles different in the first place wouldn't you say?

I guess we can finally discard the silly notion, "What does Sony have that can compete with a Halo launch on the Series X talk". It feels surreal that Halo has been made a mem for many.

Great article. I need to remember this Oli Welsh guy.

The guy's right, though I think he'd agree that MS is trying to appeal to core gamers this time; it just didn't work out. Do we blame COVID? 343 Industries? Both and more?

Regardless, we're still waiting to see that one Series X game that makes the case for their machine.

Most of their pitches seem like they are aimed at forum goers "high framerates" etc but they seemed to forget you need actual games to get people excited and they still haven't provided on that front. I remember when the One X was close to launch Phil Spencer said "we needed to get the hardware right first and now we'll get the software" well that was in 2017 and here we are half way through 2020 and we are still getting CGI announce trailers and games that look like legacy xbox one games.

as a PC gamer the only way of series X was going to sell itself to me was by showing it could do things I can't do on my PC. I was hoping that's what would happen because I certainly don't have it 2080 video card and I don't exactly have an amazing SSD but based on the showing they gave I'm going to be fine for at least a year or two because most of what I play on PC looks far better than this.

I'm sure Hori will make a case for the Series X.

Im still reeling from how bad that showcase was. Years of hyping "the next E3", "next gen is where first party will pay off". Outright smugness of Spencer saying he now felt confident after Sonys show

And they show up with Halo looking like an Xbox 360 game and a range of CGI trailers. Unbelievably inept

It's fair to say IF Sony lacked the launch games they would've held back TLOU2 & GOT. To credit Sony they didn't hold em back.

They do lack first party launch games, unless they turn around in the next few months and confirm a whole bunch of new dates for GT7 and RnC. The Mile Morales game is cool but not really a big launch title.

I don't think they need it for launch though as people will be grabbing a PS5 for Cyberpunk, Valhalla, COD, Fifa etc.

They did make a case; If you want current/next gen games at PC ultra settings and a cavalcade of 'cheap' games via gamepass, buy an XSX.

If you want cutting edge technology in games and VR buy a PS5
Define cutting edge because I fail to see it in anything PlayStation has shown lul

So, what are the Sony games available at launch?

I don't have a list and since there's another show left in August iirc it wouldn't be complete if I had a list. I don't think anyone would've faulted them for holding the 2 games I mentioned back for the PS5. But not doing so is either confidence in what they have or arrogance in that belief.

Sigh...For the most part(May showing was shitty), Microsoft was doing so well getting ready for next gen but these last couple of weeks have been bizarre.

First saying 1st party games for the 1st couple of years will work on Xbox one and Series X and then kinda walking that back. It's like the execs don't speak to one another before making public comments. Then bragging about how powerful the machine is and then showing us an ugly build of Halo. And we still aren't sure we have actually seen anything running on an actual Xbox Series X

They really need to back up that power talk and showing Hellblade 2 running on the Series X would have realllly helped with that. I just don't get why this is so hard for them to understand. Seems like they take a couple steps forward and then do something really dumb that knocks them back.

Luckily it's not all bad for them. They do have some huge games coming that will probably be graphical powerhouses but it looks like they are years away. I think once they hit their stride though things will be great for them. The Series X is a great piece of tech that I plan on getting...eventually now instead of ASAP.

Also, if they are really making online play free I would announce that soon to help soften the dragging that Halo is currently getting.

Microsoft didn't feature:

I don't see the issue?

PlayStation has a huge audience base ranging from kids to adults, and ill go on a limb and say that you do not have a kid.

This game was showcased for parents who want to game with their kids.

Sure, even I skipped the trailer, but you have to give them props for trying to showcase their entire fan base that they're catering to all demographics.
