Eurogamer: Microsoft still hasn't made the case for Xbox Series X

"Xbox's showcase last night was bookended by a gameplay demo of Halo Infinite - a very tangible prospect, to be fair, but one which you will be able to play on Xbox One and which was reportedly captured on PC - and a teaser reveal for a new Fable that, while cute, had little to add to the rumours of its existence that have circulated for years. Much of what filled the space between them was interesting, exciting or both, from the emotional lockdown trailer for Tetris Effect: Connected to the news that Fatshark was taking its trademark co-op chaos into the Warhammer 40K realm with Darktide. But most of it was frustratingly opaque.

Stalker 2's debut trailer was, it turned out, target footage. Forza Motorsport was present as a graphics demo with an ominous note that it was "early in development". Rare's Everwild, on second showing, remained as mysterious as it is lovely to behold. Xbox Studios prospects State of Decay 3 and Avowed got CG teasers only. There was, overall, a striking lack of gameplay footage - and, astonishingly, we still can't be sure that we have seen a game running on Xbox Series X.

Bearing in mind Halo Infinite's underwhelming looks, all of a sudden Xbox's pro-cross-gen stance sounds less like a strategy than like a rationale to explain away a last-gen game that got itself delayed into the launch window for the next console, and thus had to release on both - Zelda: Breath of the Wild style. (To be fair, we should note that PlayStation 5's launch game, Spider-man: Miles Morales, is an update and extension of a PS4 hit. Maybe you just can't launch with a proper generational exclusive in 2020.) But then, this view doesn't square with developer 343's assertion to IGN that Halo Infinite is a "platform for the future" that should last 10 years without getting a traditional sequel.

It is hard to believe that, as a new console generation approaches, Microsoft is once again fluffing its lines. The hardware reveal went well - unsurprisingly, since it had been so carefully rehearsed with Xbox One X a couple of years previously. But we have yet to see anything that shows those impressive stats in action, and corporate strategy seems once again to be getting in the way of what players want to see and hear."

Great article. I need to remember this Oli Welsh guy.

If Satya Nadella's company isn't doing well at persuading us to buy consoles and games, that's probably because it doesn't really want to. What it wants to sell us is Game Pass subscriptions...

And yet, 2013 still has an important lesson to teach us. Microsoft fluffed it so hard then because it thought a pitch to the core gaming audience no longer mattered. It was wrong. This audience of tastemakers is still the hub the wider gaming community revolves around, and it really matters what excites them - what excites us. If your games don't thrill us, if your pitch seems driven by theory rather than passion, you are in trouble. Xbox still has work to do.

The guy's right, though I think he'd agree that MS is trying to appeal to core gamers this time; it just didn't work out. Do we blame COVID? 343 Industries? Both and more?

Regardless, we're still waiting to see that one Series X game that makes the case for their machine.

When your flagship franchise is shown on a PC in the most important showcase for the Xbox Series X console you know they don't give a crap about it. This is an unprecedented fuck up. Not even the original Xbox One reveal was this in your face. But they won't tell you straight up to buy the competition. They still want to sell you the box to milk you and the damage control is out in full force.

What time is it?
The one thing I disagree with is him saying Sony "edged it".
Like, mate, they had sequels to some of their best-selling games of the past 4 years all seemingly coming less than a year from launch. They did great.

Microsoft didn't feature:

They are releasing a console just to buy time to figure out how to spin their game console business into a subscription service. The Series X is a formality so that Xbox gamers can look forward to something. Gamepass PC didn't take off and MS is also having a hard time competing against Valve and Epic, it's not just Sony and Nintendo whooping them.

I don't even know if this is sarcastic or not but fuck it, Bugsnax looks damn great.
"Ape Escape-like" with bugs that are food? Yes

Karma will hit me when the game is great and I end up loving it, but it looks dreadful.

I guess Halo, The Medium, The Ascent, and the best console version of Cyberpunk not enough for a launch.

I don't think they are, assuming Halo doesn't get delayed which it should. Also, "best console version" is not saying much. What's the different between the PS5 and Series X version? Nobody knows yet. I assume you're going to need a magnifying glass to tell, even more so than usual.

It looks exactly what it needs to look like? Cartoony and round and fun.

If I wanted to be spicy, it looks more confident in its artstyle than Halo Infinite (less pop-in too).

I agree with that article.

As for saying Sony is similar I disagree.

I'm going to ignore timed exclusives and multiplatform games here as these ain't a big deal.

Let's compare exclusives.

Sony games look much further along.
Ratchet and Clank we seen gameplay
Returnal we seen gameplay
Sackboy we seen gameplay
Gran Turismo 7 we seen gameplay
Destruction Allstars, we seen gameplay
Spiderman Miles Morales, confirmed for holiday
Demon Souls we seen multiple environments
Horizon 2 although not gameplay multiple environments and confirmation will come out next year, also the first game came out a while back

Now let's look at Xbox
Halo Infinite we seen gameplay
Fable CG trailer
State of Decay CG trailer
Forza In Engine Trailer that says in development
Everwild the 2nd showing for this game and still no gameplay
Avowed CG trailer
Hellblade 2 a no show and their first showing had no gameplay

So why should I trust Microsoft. What if these games are 2022-2023 and beyond. How ambitious are these games what if say Everwild isn't AAA, what if Avowed isn't as expansive as Witcher 3 and is more like Outerwilds a smaller scope. What if Fable isn't great as Fable 3 wasn't all that and Playgrounds never made a WRPG. How big is Hellblade going to be or will it be small as the first game.

The only way Microsoft would have impressed me is by wowing me with a gameplay slice similar to the first Ghost of Tsushima or Horizon reveal. Microsoft has alot to prove and they been promising they will do better with games coming later, now they just did that again. It's been years and they keep doing this. Why shall I trust them if they haven't made a critical darling in years other than Forza Horizon series and Ori which isn't AAA. They have shown games that are far out before and they turned out bad (Crackdown) or cancelled (Scalebound, Fable Legends). They have had a history of showing CG which turned out to be nothing (Phantom Dust). They hyped up games before like ReCore saying it's from creators of Metroid Prime to only be a B level game which didn't review well. So other than gameplay it's hard for Microsoft to convince me I should trust them with CG and games that are so far out and not know how ambitious these games will be.

The only gameplay slice they should and hyped up alot beforehand was Halo Infinite and looking at it, it didn't look good both graphically and in gameplay. So all I see is alot of hype for these future products but the eventual product doesn't fullfil that hype. Where as Sony they have hyped games up but had a ton of hitters critically and sales wise most recently Ghost of Tsushima and Last of Us 2. Yes they had their fair few of duds like The Order but the amount of quality games they release I can trust them enough.

Now even if Naughty Dog shows a CG trailer of a new IP I can get hyped because they have my trust. But Microsoft I can't say the same thing about. Many of Sony's bug studios have expanded since their latest games ,Guerrilla Games moved to a bigger studio since Horizon, inSomniac expanded since Spiderman, Naughty Dog and Santa Monica as well. People are hyped for Horizon 2 as they planted the seeds with the first game so Horizon 2 should exceed the original. Same with Ghost of Tsushima 2 or whatever the next game from Sucker Punch is. Same for God of War 2. These developers are all improving and leaving Microsoft in the dust. They have laid the groundwork, it shows it takes time to make a good studio not just money.

I'd go with antiquated and ugly complimented by god awful music. Bugsnax haunts my dreams.

I don't really care about Halo.

Hey Digital Foundry! Where is your video on the Halo footage? It's been a day.

This was posted literally one day later.

yeah a bit strange that. They were very fast off the mark on the Sony one. Couldn’t wait to pick holes in it. Not so much for this by the looks of it.

DF trashes MS, yet Sony fans aren't happy and they continue with the conspiracy theory because DF haven't released a video trashing Halo fast enough.

You can't make this shit up.

As opposed to what will the PS5 have new, exclusive and available for launch this year? Got a list? Just the facts please.

Yeah, they probably just need some time to dissect Infinite.
Plus, most of everything was CGI, no need to rush a video out.

You asked if the launch line-up is enough. I said that it's not in my opinion. Why do I have to post a list? I don't do list wars, there are no facts involved in this discussion, just preference .

That's a shit comparison and you know it.
With 2020 being what it is, it's obvious neither company wants to announce a launch game just to delay it.

Point is, Sony announced double the first-party titles as MS, all looking far along enough for 2021. It's no context.

We all know they will deliver.... whether we buy on launch or 3 months later...

Most likely 1 later (or close too).

Don’t see Horizon releasing before Q3-2021, GT is most likely a 2022-2023 (at the earliest). I could see Ratchet and Clank releasing early 2021 (but due to COVID who knows) but that game doesn’t move systems.

So you cant name shit. Duly noted.

Because the goal is to sell Game Pass subs not consoles. Maybe one day people will realize this.
They would sell more subscriptions if they made their platform the place you get all the best games... People who get an Xbox are probably more likely to get the gp subscription as well, even compared to hardcore PC gamers who like their "Xbox" games.

I can name titles, because I can literally link either company's page for their respective titles, or you can google it.

The point is that, even limited by confirmed launch titles, and especially after Halo's lackluster showing, Sony still looks miles better. Still, if you want to act as if Everwild, Forza and Fable should be discounted, be my guest.
