Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

Not open for further replies.
So Richard from Digital Foundry thinks the new RTX 3070 pricing announcement makes buying an XSX somewhat pointless. But he thinks the PS5 will be in a class of its own due to its exclusives.

I have to agree with him.

I am a PS fanboy and even I cant understsand this false logic that has two big flaws:

One is that It starts from the false premise that getting the graphics card equals tô getting the whole system, as If You dont need a top of the line cpu and SSD to not have bottlenecks and a great and expensive cooling, along with other accessories.

The other false premise is to suggest that everyone has the PC gamer profile or can easily adapt to it. In modern life style, people Just dont want to have extra work to build a platform that requires a Lot of work (and money) even to build one. People dont want a giant Desktop that looks archaic as it doesnt fit well in a living rooms, they dont want to deal with windows, crashes, issues with drivers ijstalments, stutters, bad ports only to play a game, they dont to always having to get off their seat everytime only to boot the system, many Just want a one purchase plug and play product that looks Nice right besides your tv and Just hold a button on their sofa to have some fun

Every day I come home from work and have to read yet another fucking post about Ratchet and Clank loading times. I'm gonna fucking lose it.

Any more talk of this and you're grounded. All of you. I don't care if you're not involved.

Someone give me juicy info on PS5 geometry engine or some shit.
hey, don't blame me for it. I am only REPLYING WHEN QUOTED about this, and as you can see above I keep it to a minimum

edit: oh and I reply only to those that I don't have on ignore list, so that makes my responses waaaayy less than they could have been.

Yeah he’s lying or wrapping in the Cell part of the equation.

Lying? I doubt it. The RSX probably had a totally different topology compared to PC GPUs from that era, since according to Nvidia's CEO it was specifically designed for an unconventional heterogeneous CPU that blurs the line between itself and GPUs:

"The RSX is designed to work closely with [the Playstation 3's Cell processor] in a closed-system environment"... "The Cell processor has multiple processors that can execute different threads and produce geometry, texture, and shader information for the RSX to consume." -- Jen-Hsun Huang

If Kutaragi did wrap CELL up in the RSX, that would be no different than what David Shippy did himself when he said:

"Again, they're completely different models. So in the PS3, you've got this Cell chip which has massive parallel processing power, the PowerPC core, multiple SPU cores… it's got a GPU that is, in the model here, processing more in the Cell chip and less in the GPU. So that's one processing paradigm -- a heterogeneous paradigm." -- David Shippy

By the way, the Shippy quote I pulled came from an article of him clearing the record on his book.

The Sony rasterizer plan fell apart and they were forced to go find a GPU fast.

If by "Sony rasterizer" you mean the 1 Ghz GPU that Toshiba designed for PS3 but couldn't produce in sufficient yields, then yeah the plan fell apart. If you're referring to a CELL-based GPU Kutaragi supposedly had in mind for PS3 initially, then that's a fallacy. I touched on it in a prior post...

The entire point of the Cell was to be a PS2 setup taken to the extreme, but by the time they were ready to launch the GPU market consolidated and sped up and Sony’s graphics team couldn’t remotely compete.

That's a myth. The entire point of the CELL Broadband Engine was to be a general purpose CPU capable of mimicking the functionality of a cellular neural network (CNN) -- a once novel parallel computing paradigm first proposed by Leon Chua and Lin Yang in 1987. Here's some takeaways from their paper....

- The key features of neural networks are asynchronous parallel processing, continuous-time dy-namics, and global interaction of network elements.
- Some encouraging if not impressive applications of neural net- works have been proposed for various fields such as opti- mization, linear and nonlinear programming, associative memory, pattern recognition and computer vision [5]-[12].
- Cellular neural networks share the best features of both worlds; its continuous time feature allows real-time signal processing found wanting in the digital domain and its local interconnection feature makes it tailor made for VLSI implementation.
- Cellular neural networks are uniquely suited for high-speed parallel signal processing.
- Conventional digital computation methods have run into a serious speed bottleneck due to their serial nature. To overcome ths problem, a new computation model, called “neural networks,” has been proposed, which is based on some aspects of neurobiology and adapted to integrated circuits [2]-[4].

The features and applications bolded in the takeaways can be found on CELL-related presentation slides from IBM...

ibm-research-33-l.jpg

Also, if you read some of Kutaragi's interviews you'll find that he used similar language to Chua and Lang when discussing his objectives for CELL and its nature within the context of a network...

"The idea of a computer architecture that emulates living organisms struck me as I was swimming through a sea of ideas. A network made of cells that works like a single computer? I felt this wild urge to try out that sort of thing." -- Ken Kutaragi

"The chip came out far beyond my expectations. When this product was launched, I set out a number of propositions, like "I want distant cells on earth connecting and communicating with each other organically," "there should be object-oriented ideas,"" -- Ken Kutaragi

So no, a PS2 on steroids wasn't the thing Kutaragi was chasing when he realized the CELL Broadband Engine. He was in pursuit of an architecture that would fundamentally change computing in hopes of changing the digital landscape on a global scale. It was his hope since the '80s (the decade Chua and Lang submitted their paper on cellular neural networks to the IEEE) and PS3 was the vessel he literally put his hope in...

EET: Then the Cell processor was conceived for gaming?
Kutaragi: No, it is for computing but I wanted to change the concept of computers. The name of our company is Sony Computer Entertainment; I wanted to merge computer technology and entertainment. It may be regarded as game applications for the time being, but I wanted to realize the day when “computer entertainment” would mean all such entertainment applications, including games"... "The PS1 and PS2 were based on computer technology, but they were still transitional. At the next stage, I hoped to tackle computer technology from the start. I have harbored that hope since the 1980s." -- Ken Kutaragi

"Though sold as a game console, what will in fact enter the home is a Cell-based computer." -- Ken Kutaragi

entertainment-is-the-key-application-l.jpg

To partially reiterate and conclude. Kutaragi's ultimate goal with the CELL Broadband Engine (not to be reached until around year 2026/2027 based on my interpretation of an analogy he made -- timestamped)...

was to birth a neural network-based AI for the creation, management and distribution of music, movies, games and other digital content from/to any location in the world upon request (be it verbal or non-verbal) using a variety of devices. In his words:

"The model image for the Cell-based network may be the Internet: Servers around the world form one virtual “computer,” and each PC accesses it. One Cell or cluster of Cells can also function as a server; but whereas the present Internet mainly handles characters, applications on the Cell network will also handle semantics and reasoning." -- Ken Kutaragi

- I think Kutaragi was telling the truth about the RSX, and David Shippy's sentiments lend credence to Kutaragi's claim.
- The "Sony rasterizer" was a 1Ghz GPU designed by Toshiba. The plan fell apart because Toshiba couldn't reach sufficient yields, so SIE went to Nvidia for the RSX.
- Kutaragi was after a neural network-based AI for entertainment when he realized the CELL Broadband Engine, not a beefed-up PS2.

Of course its a bit silly, but if you want a console, just buy a PS5. Former Xbox exec Mike Ybarra said he will buy a PS5 for exclusives and play the rest on PC. No real need for an Xbox even if you prefer a console. Unless you HAVE TO play Halo lol. PS4 owners aren't missing out on anything this gen.

While MS really does do that for some reason I usually don't mention it or care about it I just want to say that this whole "pro-consumer" narrative is so cringy jeez.
MS only cares about printing money (with Azure lol).

Xbox and Xbox 360 are the golden edges and the only Xbox that mattered. Since Xbox One it's been non stop shitshow for the most part.

That's not a false premise or even something to be used against Richard in his take. It's a mostly pc focused and enthusiast aimed review. It is for a huge chunk of the population that either mostly focuses on PC or are multiplatform. It assumes the viewer has or is planning to have a gaming ready desktop and wondering if worth the upgrade.

And yeah, if you have a decent pc, between getting an xsx or upgrading the gpu, it's really a no brainer.

I agree with this. Its obviously the right move If You ready game on PC, but even then, its not like Just getting new graphics cards, theres expensive SSD too.

Sounds more like Eastwood, the curious thing of this kind of guys is if you know his twitter profile and then check what he follows you will see many
Xbox fanboys profiles also another way to identified is if Doncabesa like an opinion you know exactly in that moment something is wrong.

Regarding Alex the guy is sick he insist the 14 GB/s is the average decompression when is just the max of data the GPUs can decompress in that
department PS5 is better with 22 GB/s but looks almost impossible the data is compressed in so aggressive way also that data in some moment
needs to be access for the CPU, anything is free so we need to know what is the cost for the GPU while is doing that and finally the IO of PS5 has
more than a better decompressor which doesn't use the CPU also has things like cache scrubber.

Is great the new GPUs have this because that means something now the IO of the console will be use more aggressive as we thought for the third
parties and in some way the XVA could be not enough to compete against the other devices as soon the console is release and this matter because
if NVIDIA did that is because is agree in some way with Cerny, this care more than just for loading.

Let's meet up at HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 house, we can beat it out of him.

I honestly don't have a concrete date that I would put my name to.

Have heard dates and for the most part they are the same as what people are talking about here but again the way I gather its not solid.

If I was a betting man I would put some money down on next week but many people have said they think around the 9th so thats not anything new.

Usually when I hear something thats rock solid its maybe a day prior to it hitting Twitter sometime that morning.

And since getting back to Florida I have spent more time on the beach then anything else so my shit is lagging behind anyhow right now.
