PS5 needs its own 'Xbox All Access' program if it wants to beat Microsoft

For those unaware, Xbox All Access is a program created by Microsoft in 2018 that gives consumers the option to finance their new console purchase for one low cost per month, over the course of 24-months. It is expected that the Xbox Series X will cost $35/month through Xbox All Access, and the Xbox Series S will be $25/month. Xbox All Access also bundles Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass, making it quite the enticing offer.

This is a program that Sony hasn't had an answer for yet, and price is going to play an increasingly important factor in people's purchasing decisions. While Sony also seems to be one step ahead of Microsoft when it comes to exclusive games, the same can't be said for its services. Just look at PS4 backward compatibility. It was non-existent. That's set to change with the PS5, and I'm hoping it's only the first of many changes to come.

With the global pandemic forcing people out of work, money is going to be tight for the foreseeable future. A financing plan like this would be the perfect way to get more people to enjoy the PS5 without breaking the bank. It's hard enough to justify a purchase of several hundred dollars this holiday, but one low cost per month like a phone plan? That's a lot easier to swallow, especially if Sony throws in PS Plus and PS Now with it, granting players online multiplayer and access to hundreds of games on demand.

No they don't i honestly believe its gonna be a landslide. The amount of hype the ps5 generates is insane. No one in their right minds would do this rent a center type shit of lets pay double the price for a next gen system short term 35 looks good long term youre getting fisted.

I think you're right OP. Perception about PS5 price is changed in the last 10 hours. No more safe zone for Sony.

It's not more. MS has been doing it for two years. It's the same price as the system.

In my country people have more money to spend. Even those on social welfare. There is literally nothing to spend your money on. People are saving a shit load and want things like a ps5 to buy.

I sold my ps4 pro for €300 last week and I bought it for €400 at launch. Gamestop are selling them second hand for €370. A €400-€500 PS5 doesn't need a financing plan!

Making a consumer friendly pricing option in the midst of a global pandemic when people are out of work is going a bit too far?

There are enough people that have the money for the first wave of PS5s and arguably they are the better consumers to target first because they’ll buy more games.

It is the smart pro consumer thing to do, but it won't happen as Sony sell a shit ton already and are wiping the floor with Xbox sales wise.

No need to bother.

Not if they want to keep me as a customer. GP (like PS Now) is great for bite sized fun and variety. BUt I still want the epic experiences that do not make sense (cost or dev time) on a sub model. (Notice Netflix isn't putting out Avatar or LOTR) So either the Sub has to go up (assuming consumption does not skyrocket) to make the content I consume feasible. Like all things in this world you get what you pay for.

Edit: Ohhh I read GamPass All Access and was thinking about the game content side and not the purchasing solution. In that case, I would actually agree. Lets lower income consumers join your ecosystem AND locks them in for a period of time where they will likely consume more content on the platform. (guess the first cup of coffee didnt do its job)

I just posted in another thread that MS needs to lean into All Access hard and completely change to a subscription model that follows the phone market. People pay for £1000 phones without blinking because they just look at the monthly cost. Considering it’s 0% APR, it’s nothing but consumer friendly and arguably promotes more iterations of hardware more often and console games could keep pace with PC development better.

As for Sony...they don’t need to do anything. Until the market changes dramatically, they just need to continue what they’re doing. There’s no need to change, but every reason why MS needs to differentiate themselves in terms of their value proposition. GamePass and All Access are the USP MS need to double down on and run a different race entirely to Sony.

Let's not get it twisted, Sony is going to sell more consoles than Xbox and the lack of a payment plan is not going to change that (unless PS5 is around $800 or more).

I appreciate that Xbox is taking the consumer friendly approach, but Sony gamers have conditioned Sony to believe that being outwardly consumer friendly is not a priority. They just want the games so that is what Sony delivered and it is working very well for them.

Both companies should stay on their current paths, noone is demanding this type of change from Sony so why should they go out of their way to provide it?

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.
The hardcore are the early adopters and knew these consoles have been coming for years and probably have saved. The casuals will go where their friends go and that system of choice when they jump in

I consider myself self a die hard xbot and in terms of console sales Sony won’t lose. Every Sony boy has there head so far up Sony purse they’ll never switch. Maybe Xbox will bring in more casual gamers because of the price and programs they’ll offer. But I feel it’ll be a long road to success, if you count success as selling the most consoles.

I don't think so. All Access is not a game-changer, 95% consoles will be sold through stores.

"Xbox Series X will cost $35/month through Xbox All Access, and the Xbox Series S will be $25/month."

How consumer friendly are $840 and $600 pricing options ?

The prices include GamePass Ultimate.
