nah, you are wrong on the bolded. it was a very blind and stupid strategy of microsoft to bring a machine that wasn't the strongest.
sure, they had a plan for it, I mean, it launched with very good games, and anybody can tell you that titanfall 1 was THE nextgen shit to play for many many months. also that insomniac game I dont remember the name now, honesty, probably is their best game ever. spiderman doesnt even hold a candle to that. pure fun open world shenanigans.
BUT, the dirt was out, so no sales, therefore no more funding games, and replanning instead. they were stupid to envy nintendo's success with wii, plain and simple.
market has a lot of space for everyone to do their own thing, not copy. microsoft had an impeccable record of bringing out the strongest machine. they fucked it up with xbone. they quickly (ie with the same gen) made up with scorpio though, which still is a fantastic piece of toy, and from what I understand they are keeping high on that stride with the new X
my 2c's

Yeah I hear you. I just don't think that XBOnes lack of sales success had anything to do with the "power." I mean, it won't help them now with even LESS of a power differential. Also, the 360 wasn't so successful because it was the most powerful. If you look at that time, they had tons of great games that came out for them, PLUS Sony had totally fucked up with the price of the PS3 being what...$200+ higher? Sure games eventually looked best on PS3 and it made up the sales numbers...technically, but that's why MS had the most successful generation to date. At least, IMO...it was mostly about the games and the ecosystem. Easier and better online, better options to link up with friends, etc. Even being able to change your gamer tag was a HUGE thing and something Sony JUST finally duplicated not long ago.

I get what you're saying though. So you think Microsoft's idea this time is to go after the high end with XSX and the low end with the Series S? See which works? It will be interesting for sure. Their big issue right now though is not having anything to show on the high end box for another few years. I mean exclusives. The third parties will be there but with the power difference between PS5 and XSX being so small, I'm not sure of what they'll be able to show, if anything, to set themselves apart. We shall see!

I really don't think MS cares so much about the hardware sales anyway. As I've said before I'm convinced they were dropping hardware and just changed that strategy a few years ago when they started buying Devs again. I think it's all about the 'Xbox as a platform' strategy and they're just keeping the hardware going until they can get enough people using GamePass and other services to maintain things on their own. Once that happens it wouldn't surprise me to see the hardware go away completely, even to see things like GamePass eventually offered on Nintendo and Sony platforms! Interesting times!

About the pricing, thought about it a bit more and going with $399 for PS5 DE and $449 for PS5. I think they know what the $399 number means to them, especially after this gen. Also, since the only difference between both versions is the Bluray player, $100 is too much of a price difference, and I'm not sure they want the DE to eat into the Physical Edition sales. That's also in addition to the fact the console is a bit less powerful than the SX, so they'd probably want to price it a bit lower, and also beat MS in price.

TL;DR
PS5 $449
PS5DE $399

EDIT: Also forgot to mention they obviously don't want buyers of the Physical Edition to feel ripped off paying a $100 extra for the bluray player. So $50 extra sounds ok.

For me both the scorpio X and the two new machines is proof that not only they aren't planning to leave the hardware space, but they are hungry to get back the ground they lost. Interesting times ahead like you say, thats for sure.
* and especially if sony does a crazy bomb dive with a nice and low price, things will get even more interesting even sooner.

Perrott said:
  • Silent Hill, Final Fantasy XVI and "RaySpace" announcements.
  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales story trailer; gameplay trailers for Demon's Souls and Returnal; and another look at Destruction All Stars, Gran Turismo 7 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. No Ratchet & Clank/Horizon until The Game Awards.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War zombies trailer; Resident Evil Village trailer + PSVR support announcement; plus some other third-party games.
  • And release date + price reveal at the end of the show.
Things such as the UI, the BC, services and a console teardown will be discussed via PS Blog during the next couple of weeks.

Console Wars: The Movie
It's that Chris guy too (Microsoft CMO).
Wow. I see it now. Greenberg is absolutely getting hammered about that.

You never see any Sony execs doing things like this on Twitter. They rather applaud or congratulate Xbox. Never seen Shu Yoshida encourage this behavior or any other past or present execs. Because we all know doing this encourages the toxicity to continue in forums and social media.

Here's what I think we can realistically expect from Wednesday's showcase:
- UI and some of the new features like Activities and the new Create button options.
- Spider-Man Miles Morales gameplay trailer and/or gameplay demo.
- Another Godfall trailer.
- Maybe something COD related, maybe some exclusive content.
- GTA Online on PS5.
- Given how Game Informer got some exclusive coverage for Kena on PS5 this week, maybe they'll show some gameplay of it.
- Demon's Souls, Returnal, Sackboy, Horizon FW, Destruction All Stars and GT7 release dates and/or release windows.
- Surprise big game reveal (God of War? Silent Hill? FFXVI?).
- Console price, release date and pre orders.

Any other ideas?
More a question. How do you plan to fit all this in 40 mins? Your first 2 points alone would take a 15+ mins bite out of it

Realistically, we’re getting game information (1st/3rd parties, marketing deals, upcoming game teasers/slight gameplay and some release dates), with a chance of price drop, mike drop and pre-orders open ups

Yeah, but what happens when Nintendo says, FUCK IT! GAMECUBE 2, BABY!

8 core Zen 3 CPU clocked up your mothers skirt
AMD fat motherfucker Navi 3.0 MCM and 3D stacked
24 gigs of GDDR xXx
M.3 SSD
Online capabilities still suck

Well, The Future of Gaming was 75 minutes long and they had 25 games + Jim Ryan talking + devs talking + transitions + console reveal. So yeah, I think 40~ minutes is enough time.

Lol!! Not trying to be a smart alike but have you watched any of these videos before?? This isn’t a stage presentation.. this is a streamlined, well-edited piece.. No long dumb speeches or devs talking to fill time like Xbox.. 40 minutes is more than enough to cover that.

They could start the show by opening into the UI, navigating through a few games, click on Spidey, show a couple minutes of gameplay, snipping a clip and posting it via the create button.. and you’re done. That’s maybe 4 minutes. An average of 90 seconds to 2 minutes per trailer he listed is only 12-16 minutes.

Yes. I can finally launch my PS4 Pro into fucking orbit.
I want to finish borderlands on PS5 without this vacuum cleaner going off.
I suspect most games now are going to have next gen updates. Currently even fucking Division 2 will be playable on PS5 but Massive can't be arsed to update the engine. Fucking cretins.
Also working on a new unique DLC with a new game mode and another skill tree for each Vault Hunter,I already beat the game but never touched the dlc can’t wait to start a new vault hunter .

Ah yes, I could see that. True. That whole thing will have to be very tightly edited, then.

I just have a hard time imagining that we could learn all about the Create Button (to only name one thing out of the list) in a mere 2 minutes, though. That function alone seems like it would take extensive teardown

Very good point. I tend to imagine that when we usually get gameplay sequences, it’s usually more of a 5+ mins showcase in itself (I think R&C was about a 7-8 mins gameplay showcase last time around? How long was the last Halo gameplay showcase)

Yeah I see where you’re coming from. I could also see a quick montage of them showing a variety of little things you could do, and maybe a deep dive UI video/blog later. I think the UI alone and the speed of things launching is gonna floor people. They won’t even have to have “suspend” features.. Devs have already reported games fully launching and being playable in 2 seconds from a cold start. So pumped!!

Honestly they could just give us a quick demonstration and just detail everything in a separate video or a blog post. Just my opinion.

PS5 will be at $500.

With Sony officially announcing their last Showcase being game centered and not about the system, we can conclude Sony has conceded the battle over whose system is superior.

We had one show from Cerny that basically concentrated on the SSD and that was all. To be honest I am kind of surprised, I was expecting much more in depth breakdown of the system and how its technology will be utilized, especially them addressing the lack of features that Xbox has reveal since the breakdown.

So many people were here arguing that the PS5 basically had many of the same features Xbox had highlighted and that it would announce them as we got closer, which ended up never happening even after having opportunities to come out and reveal more of the technology.

It feels very similar to the PS4 Pro vs X1X situation, I just would have assumed Sony wouldn't have been this easy of a push over again.
whatever sony reveals about the system specs, the Fudders are going to spread fud about it. So sony will show us what the games will look like nextgen. Which is something MS has been unable to do.

Come to think of it, the way you described the opening of the show (including the launch of Spidey) would actually be really, really good. How better to show the whole thing than exactly how gamers are going to experience it at home, soon enough. Plus it wouldn’t take that long out of the show to demonstrate plenty out off the ps5, from the ui to that fast ssd and gameplay all at once (perhaps with a voice-over giving details at the same time, like they often did when CD Projekt were presenting new Cyberpunk long gameplays). I’d be 100% behind this

That’s been my thought since this event was announced. They could literally do most of the show right from the interface. Boot it up, scroll through a couple games, click on one, play some of it, use the create button a bit, next game listed, rinse repeat.. They could even save some of the big reveals for games further to the right or in some folder system on the UI. You could even play an interview or trailer as well from the Media Player.

And it falls in line with what they’ve done in the past and heard behind closed doors—they want to show EVERYTHING RUNNING DIRECTLY on it. Not a PC, not reference hardware.. what the user is going to actually experience.
