You're a movie director - what game(s) would you adapt and why?

We've had our fair share of movie adaptations in the past few decades. We can probably all agree that most have been shit but there have been a few decent ones. I'd say Tomb Raider was pretty good (maybe I'm in the minority who liked the Alicia Vikander movie) and I enjoyed the first two Resident Evil movies.

So here's the scenario - you have unlimited funds and you can cast whoever you like (and they can be magically aged/de-aged) - what game would you adapt and why?

I personally would like to see the first Broken Sword game turned into a movie. Since it's essentially an interactive movie anyway, it ought to be relatively easy to adapt.

The vast majority of this movie is sarcasm and dry humour, so I've chosen people I think could pull off that sort of thing.

Aaron Eckhart as George Stobart
(Male lead)

Sofia Boutella as Nico Collard

Jean Reno as Inspector Rosso
(Hardball police detective character, with some humour - fits JR perfectly)

Gad Elmaleh as Sergeant Moue
(Archetypal dopey police officer acting as assistant to Rosso)
Gad is a comedian in real life so he would easily pull it off)

Geoff Goldblum as Andre Lobineau
(Inquisitive "tech guy" archetypal character)
Plus I just want to have a bit in the movie where he says "Well, there it is"

Christoph Waltz as Khan
(Movie villain - original villain wasn't that humorous but Waltz could add a little flavour)

BONUS:

Jack Whitehall as Unnamed Hotel Ubu Receptionist
(Flamboyant gay style character - popular in 90s, not so good today perhaps?)

Don't think Whitehall is even gay but he often comes across a little 'camp'. Only person who came to mind who is mildly famous but wouldn't mind taking on a cameo.

Killer 7

Just imagine how cool the Harman Smith multiple personality manifestation assassin gimmick would work on the big screen, then add all the creepy pseudo-Lynch Nicolas Winding Refn vibes

You'd be hard pressed to make a bad movie out of that

Rainbow Six Siege. It would probably be like the A-Team or that other movie series with a thousand celebrities as soldiers (the expendables).

It would bring in money.

I think Silent Hill deserves another chance, the first movie had partially potential, the second one was garbage. But I would probably not make a movie out of a game and instead pitch the idea as a limited series to Netflix, Amazon or HBO, because the time of a movie is not long enough to capture the whole story of most games.

Street Fighter The Movie The Game The Movie! Then they could release another game!
Chun-Li: My father saved his village at the cost of his own life. You had him shot as you ran away. A hero at a thousand paces.
M. Bison: I'm sorry. I don't remember any of it.
Chun-Li: You don't remember?!
Bison: For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Fall guys, except it's actually what happens after you die. You become a pawn in a bigger entity's entertainment. The crown is a representation of the ticket to Valhalla/Heaven/Reincarnation/etc. You either "git gud" or you will be trapped in hell forever.

The cast is Ryan Reynolds as the newly deceased protagonist.

The Rock as a gym rat who is unable to win games that require high agility due to his size.

Jared Leto as male to female transgender.

Morgan Freeman as God. Turns out hes a dickhead and is doing it all for fun.

Michelle Rodriguez as the soldier woman.

Kevin hart as a token black person and comic relief. His short height will make him unable to ever win.

The movie is a huge commercial success and I become a millionaire. A few days after the premiere some autistic twitter user finds my old account full of inflammatory tweets and the mob attempts to cancel me online.

I would do original Bioshock but instead of following the story of the original game, it would be from perspective of normal family moving in to Rapture and we see the fall of the city though their eyes.

Halo Prequel
Bruce Greenwood as Captain Keyes
Nathan Fillion as ODST Eddie Buck

No other returning characters necessary. No Cortana, Chief maybe makes a cameo but is 100% CGI (Think the way Iron Man was done, but no internal helmet scenes)

I think a Dragon Age TV show could really work, but it probably wouldo been better if it came out before the Witcher TV series cause they'd be rather similar.

I'd just pay Blur studios their dream budget to make whatever the fuck they want as a full CGI Halo movie. Full creative license, hands off and have at it.

The story of SH2 is pretty simple if you boil it down. Just cut out the 3 hour section where James is throwing cans of orange juice down a garbage shoot.

Does it has to be a live action movie?
If not, then I vote for Super Mario.
Their last movie was just terrible and I think a CGI movie would be pretty fun.

If it has to be a live action, then Control or Infamous (1 or 3) maybe?

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
Unlimited budget? I'd do the Warcraft movie, but I'd actually do the story people cared about. 2.5-3 hour epic covering Arthas's downfall and the rise of the Lich King, up to the point where he defeats Illidan and the movie ends on a shot-for-shot recreation of this scene. It'd be amazing. No-one in Hollywood would buy that script.

It sucks that we'll probably never see that thanks to them making the Warcraft movie part one of a failed trilogy.

You're my type of person, broken sword is one of my all time favourite games

For my choice, it would be second sight. I'd love to see that as a film

God of War, with The Rock being Kratos.

But the first and way more charismatic one, not the pussy ass of the last game

Elder Scrolls has a ton of potential. Would love to learn more about the guard that used to be an adventurer until he took an arrow to his knee.

Video games are always shit as movies because they are generally long form narratives that don’t condense well into short form movies.

Forget making them into films, it’ll never work.

Instead, think about making them into TV series like The Witcher or Castlevania.

So here’s mine:

A ten part dark fantasy epic based around themes of decay, entropy, the nature of death and how ultimately all stories end with corruption and failure.

A meditation on the fantasy genre, that highlights how fantasy stories are ultimately fairy tales that would never end well, once you start to examine the pieces properly, and inject an element of realism.

It‘s called Dark Souls.

Should do well.

Mario Bros origin story as a CGI film, so, basically what they're doing already, though I'm not sure I would have chosen the Minions studio to do the work.

Anyway, follow the obvious action comedy plot: two blue collar bros stumble across a portal to the Mushroom Kingdom where (in spite of a series of mishaps and misunderstandings) they become legends by helping Princess Peach win back her throne.

The only twist would be to start them off not in modern day but in the 1930s New York as Italian immigrants, fresh off the boat. Have most of their dialogue be in Italian with subtitles, with the occasional broken English phrase picked up on the job. Use that to create lots of silly miscommunication/dramatic irony, which kids should love.

You might also want to make them doctors and/or former gymnasts where they come from, only to be saddled with odd plumbing and construction jobs in their new lives. Gotta have an in-universe explanation for those spinoff games. lol.

I would do some kind of Bloodborne prequel that is a story about the set-up to the game.
No daft "wink wink" moments to the audience or anything.

Following the story of Master Willem and Laurence the First Vicar.
I'd actually not even call the story "Bloodborne" so that it can stand alone as a movie but people who've played Bloodborne can get a bit extra from it.

Call it "The Old Blood" or something.

I'd like to see someone do something similar with Skyrim.
A movie set in that world but not trying to just borrow from the game too much.

I kind of hate the idea of movies that are trying to "cash in" on the popularity of a game franchise.
They end up making shitty movies that have too much background to explain and are much less interesting than the games.

Commodore 64 Samantha Fox strip poker, starring Danny DeVito as horny teenager and Scarlet Johansson as Fox

Going to go with MalPaso on this. I'm Clint Eastwood and my grand kids are bugging me to make a video game. I look into my back catalog of films acted in and pick the following for contenders:

-A Fistful of Dollars [Western shoot-em-up game, third-person, sets similar to original movie, multiple platforms]
-Play Misty For Me [Dramatic first-person evasion game similar to that "Resident Evil" game, survival, multiple platforms]
-Dirty Harry [bastards already made this game...RELEASE IT ALREADY1]
-Escape from Alcatraz [1st person, multi-player, survival, puzzle, multiple platforms]
-Unforgiven [choose from one of three lead characers, alternate story mode to play as Gene Hackman, single-player, third-person, yeah...this one's good enough]
-The Bridges of Madison [Some Japanese developers asked to make a "visual novel" out of one of my movies; I gave this to them. It'd better be good.]

This outta be good enough for em'. Here's a sample shot of a game they already made based on one of my movies...
