Jim Ryan: Confirmed PS5 Won’t Have backwards Compatibility With PS3 and Older Games

Any backwards comparability with PS3, PS2 and PS1 was going to be difficult. I'm happy with PS4 backwards compatibility.

I see you've been trolling non-stop in threads. Shocking post history.
You have nothing to add to the discussion so why comment?

Cracks me up when people feel the need to announce when they ignore or report someone.

They'll have my $ when they add it in, then. I can wait, even if I wait another generation. Aftermarket boxes are already playing PS1/Saturn games.

Was never expecting this to begin with. I'm still waiting for Sony to confirm PS4 backwards compatibility that isn't behind their PlayStation Plus paywall bullshit. Oh, who am I kidding? That's not going to happen. SMH.

Don't hold your breath, opportunity cost versus potential ROI just doesn't square. Most of all, unless something changes drastically for their business, they have no need to dig back into the past. They'll just leave it to partners/third-parties to decide if these old products are worth resurrecting.

Everyone knew already, but it's nice to have it in writing.

Still, you'll be able to buy the PS2 GTA trilogy for $20, again, probably.

Did we though? Sony has been a little wishy washy on everything lesding up to the release.

I am starting to become concerned that the SSD is not going to be quite as revolutionary as we were promised.

Well that's my point. Third parties are already running PS1 games on non-Sony hardware. By the end of the PS5's lifespan, I may be able to play PS1-3 on a non-Sony box and that would entice me more than a PS4 + PS5 library. Remakes are cool but it's a shame we lose 100s of games every gen when the technology is there to preserve all of it from one gen to the next.

so it's the same as PS4 then? ok.

i don't know why people think a new system should play games from a console that is 14 years older. bizarre.

Yeah I've never been able to figure that out. It is also bizarre to me that people are so surprised about it. Why would Sony put the time, effort and money into something a tiny fraction of people will actually care about?

I could emulate PS3 games using RPCS3 on my old PC which was less powerful than the PS5.

I could emulate PS2 games using PCSX2 on my older PC which was less powerful than the PS4.

I could emulate PS1 games on EPSXE in 2005 on a potato.

In each case I can improve resolution, frame rates, run effects and features that weren't available on the console.

Serious question:

How come I can play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on a potato laptop using reverse engineered emulators made by small teams, but Sony's engineers can't emulate their own PS1, PS2, and PS3 hardware that they created? Their newest console basically shares it's architecture with a PC which can emulate everything before PS4, and it's touted to be as powerful as a current gaming PC, but these engineers can't figure it out?

I'll probably be emulating PS4 games on a program made by some chain-smoking guy sitting at his desk in his underwear between rounds of DOTA in a couple of years.

Because as the Xbox is showing, you can carry a library of 100s if not 1000s of digital ports of old titles, continually selling them for $5 to 10 every console generation from that point forward. The disc compatibility would be a nice bonus, but the digital side is really where the payoff would be.

If they don't include disc compatibility with PS5, it probably won't have a chance of being included ever. By the time PS6 launches in 2025+, some of those discs will be 30 years old, absolutely ancient.

I'm not surprised. They didn't even care to add backwards compatibility to the PS4. I didn't think it would be any different with PS5.

Jim Ryan is gonna go down in history this gen.

He looks like a kid playing for the first time. In the second gif it looks like something shiny got his attention.

Jim Ryan is a fucking knob. My OG Xbox has red ringed and I want something to be able to play my old Xbox games.

Arrogant Sony once again treating gamers like shit and thinking we'll take it.

Definitely leaning towards getting an Xbox first this gen.

The fact that they weren't shouting from the rooftops about it from the beginning kinda tipped me off. Really, every feature of the PS5 we've known about since Apr/Mar. So maybe not known, but known in our hearts. I did at least.

Expected. It would be fantastic to have all PS consoles emulated on PS5, but realistically, the PS4 is significantly more important to them than platforms they can no longer make a lot of money on.

This is not surprising, maybe disappointing for some, but at least now you finally have a definitive answer.

It is interesting how this is finally officially confirmed, like PS5 cross gen games comes after preorders open

Remakes are cool but it's a shame we lose 100s of games every gen when the technology is there to preserve all of it from one gen to the next.

Those third-parties are sitting in legal gray area though, they mostly get left alone because they aren't worth chasing through the courts to prove they used "white room" practices to develop their software. Its easier to just slap them down with C+D's for trade-mark infringement as it needs minimal discovery to demonstrate (Nintendo does this all the time).

If however they set up a storefront selling unlicensed (by the IP holder) software it'd be a different story entirely. That's a revenue stream and real justification for criminal proceedings. The reality though is that typically the software/rom supply is decentralized and they are disassociated from what would be legally described as commercial piracy, with the result being the usual whack-a-mole of rom sites and torrent trackers we're familar with.

Sony, or any large commercial operation would seek to monetize the software sales at least to amortize the cost of maintenance and security of the emulator itself. Furthermore they aren't just going to allow arbitrary code to run on their closed systems as it'd be a smorgasbord for hackers, and a potential entry-point for all kinds of stuff with the potential to court bad PR.

In short, there are a myriad of good business reasons not to bother with emulation.

It's amazing, a little moaning and they'll add same sex relationships, rewrite stories to pander to the 2%
But we can't get them to support their back catalogue 🤔
Well one keeps them from selling remasters for cheap profits.

Not surprised, I was somewhat annoyed by it leading into last gen. But honestly have just moved past it. I still have my old consoles, if I really want to X game that badly I don't mind taking out my older PlayStation and plugging it in.

This is wyy I main Xbox. I have a massive library of games and lost of it I can access through one console, and if MS starts adding more games again, I'll have access to even more.

Meanwhile, to play my old PlayStation games I need to dig out the old consoles.

I didn't think it was gonna happen, but I had a faint hope Sony would do the good thing.

The PR bullshit response though? Makes me really not like Jim. I mis Kaz, at least he had charisma.

Ps1, ps2, ps3? we have a device for that...

it sucks tho that that device is basically prone to die on you after a few years :(
I would have gotten a 60GB NTSC launch PS3 by now if there wasn't the lingering YLOD issue... just like the RROD at one point all of these systems will get it.

Ok I recall Sony saying they believe in generations, but made the new Spider-Man and horizon on the ps4 as well? Also they will probably support that system for a while, but just months ago they said they wasn’t? I’m just kinda confused, also wondering why can’t the PS5 run at least ps1/2 disc?

"So, unfortunately, we couldn’t reach the implementation of such compatibilities."

this is interesting, compared how he referred last time about BC dismissing it, now he changed his mind and he basically says they "tried but wasnt ready", this makes me think they have it partially done and will add BC later maybe mid-gen to earn good PR or something similar(just like MS), they should be working in a PS3 emulator anyway, sooner or later they will have to replace the PS3 boards of PSnow servers it makes sense to use a board that can run every game

because they didn't bother.
emulating PS1 is so easy, it's literally possible since the damn 90s... the damn Dreamcast could emulate some PS1 games using bleemcast.
PS2 is also no issue nowadays even tho it's a hassle on PC at the moment.

the issue is that they would need to test every game in order to ensure a quality experience (not that this stopped them having a somewhat buggy PS2 Back Compat emulation on second gen PS3 models) and adjust settings for certain games manually.
they apparently think that this feature isn't important for the success of the PS5 (and it really isn't) which sucks.

Ok, I can buy the technical complexity of emulating the CELL processor being a roadblock to PS3 backwards compatibility. PS1 or PS2, however? No, there's no excuse. Not on this hardware in 2020. And this is a big part of why Xbox is getting my money. Beating your chest about your amazing games and how special they are... only to effectively abandon them once their profitability reaches end of life tells us how important these games are to you.

I'm not surprised, but it's still total ducking bollocks.

We know they have functioning PS1, PS2 and PSP emulators at the very least. Let our purchases carry over, offer what games are already licensed, or just even sell the emulator as an app and let us take a chance on it not working with our discs.

I also don't buy they couldn't get PS3 emulation working at this point. With the PS4's Jaguar CPU, sure, I get why it was unfeasible, but now there is just no excuse.

Seriously, I'm really starting to dislike more and more about the Playstation management these days.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Surprised he didn't say "sure you can run the specially curated selection of great PlayStation 2™ games that are also currently available for the PlayStation 4™".

If you've not moved on from that, or made arrangements to get a retro console for your little kink, that's on you.
