Microsoft should become a third party publisher.

We all know Microsoft has very deep pockets to be able to buy huge publishers like Bethesda. However, buying a company with many huge IPs as them, put them in a difficult position. It shifts the entire industry towards a "monopolistic" practice.

They know they can't ignore the entire gamer-base, and it's not even convenient to them. Do you think they'd want to release Elder Scrolls 6 exclusively to Xbox and PC (specially if the PS5 sold more this gen, too)? Of course not! They will want to sell as many copies as possible, they'd want to sell as many copies as GTA if possible.

They already release Minecraft on Switch and PS4 because they know it's a huge franchise. They just acquired at least 5 huge franchises that can't possibly make exclusive to Xbox. It might have advantages to play them on Xbox by being on Gamepass and whatnot, but there is no way the could possibly make them exclusive.

Microsoft in this new generation, also doesn't care where you play their games. They even said they don't care if you buy an Xbox. So why not become a huge and successful 3rd party? They could benefit a lot by releasing their games also on Playstation, instead of everywhere BUT Playstation. The PS fanbase is very big, and they already have their games everywhere else.

In my opinion, I think that they are preparing to do just that. If gamepass becomes as successful as they want/need (and it's doing pretty well), they seem to be wanting to take a backseat and make games, and not consoles.

What do you think?

They already are...

All of their first party exclusives are on Steam. Cuphead and Ori on Switch. Minecraft on everything. Mobile games... the list goes on.

They only just now have as big of an “active” IP base as someone like Sony so it’s really not necessary.

Plus all their stuff is on PC still.

They've got PC. That means they don't even have to think about PS regarding their Bethesda aquisition's sales; they're perfectly covered by the Steam 3rd party.

Why would they leave potentially hundreds of millions of dollars on the table? Microsoft is embracing selling games all over the place. Why would they draw the line at Bethesda games?
Imo the only way PS5 will get any Bethesda games is if they allow Gamepass on Playstation, and somehow i dont believe Sony will do that.
Microsoft have enough potential customers with Xbox and PC, with the odd game showing up on Switch.

First of all exclusives are something you want, as you dial into gaming it doesn’t matter if you have exclusives and suddenly you’re the Sega or Atari of gaming.

I think someones a little salty about yesterdays news. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Actually, I'm not salty. I've only purchased two Bethesnda games: Oblivion, which I stopped playing 3 hours in because I didn't like it, and Wolfenstein: The New Order, which I did like a lot.

I made this thread, because I think it would be great for gamers and convenient for Microsoft. Like everyone says, they already publish their games everywhere, so they are more in a mentality of "everywhere but PS", so if they became a true third party publisher, they'd be very successful.

Sony should too then. They are going to be publishing MLB the show on more platforms and have dabbled in PC.

What do you think Game Pass is for?

Once the lucrative loss leader strategies end, Microsoft will cut back on expenditures while maximizing customer acquisition. That implies putting Game Pass on other platforms for more fishing territory.

My hunch is a partnership with Nintendo, putting Game Pass + Streaming sub on Switch sometime in 2022/2023.

So then why are all of their exclusives going to Steam as well? It's not an MS platform...
Steam does operate on windows you know they don’t care if people play those games on PC also cultivating their relationship with valve who they’ve been trying to acquire for years.

Actually for Sony is very different, because they are more successful consistently. With Microsoft it applies because they are not the leading hardware seller and they have HUGE franchises (even bigger than Sony's) that could benefit more by selling them on all consoles.

OF course things could change, and this new gen they could be the ones to sell 100 million consoles and become a huge gaming empire, but I'm writing this thread based on history and a little bit of current forecasting.

How many times over the years has this subject come up, yet they still keep releasing consoles.
I'm sure long term gamepass is the future, but thats the same for everyone. One more gen after next gen imo, then Xbox and Playstation will be streaming imo. You may still get a cheap services box, but consoles as we know it will be done imo.

why not make halo on ps4 or god of war on xbox?

MS wants gamepass subs first and foremost and then it wants to sell consoles. You do both of those in spades by making ES and Fallout exclusive. They dont need to publish their games on PS5 in order to reach PS5 owners when xcloud is a thing.

Besides, with the series S and now this acquisition, Xbox is in position to have a repeat of the 360. The PS5 might not even outsell Xbox this gen

All I'm saying is that that doesn't gel with Microsoft's recent actions. They seem to be extremely willing to put their games wherever there is an audience willing to buy them. They could have made Minecraft Dungeons an Xbox / PC exclusive, but they didn't. Hell, they just put out a $150 collector's edition of Ori for Switch.

I think they will be very close in the US this gen, but Sony as some markets locked in.

If Xbox has no games, why would you want them to be a third party publisher?

The sad part is that Microsoft has many great IPs! They just need to utilize them! You just have to look at Rare.

We might see at least the streaming version of Game Pass on Playstation at some point. It probably has more to do with how much Sony will allow.

They already are. It's part of their corporate strategy. The box itself is secondary now. The new Xboxes are basically Steam boxes in a closed environment. You'll see more models within 3-4 years.

It aligns with their 365 and business enterprise strategy. Service, not hardware.

I’d be really curious what the next 5 years would entail. Microsoft’s thing is services, especially anything on Azure. They have always been great at disrupting the competition. You know, minus the fucking Zune and Windows phones lol.

But imagine if they could publish enough 1st party content to gain enough subscriptions and easily pay for day 1 3rd party stuff on GP and remain in the red the entire time. The Xbox console would become the google pixel, the the Xbox services would be the cash cow that can be put on anything. TVs, The switch, a toaster all in 4K+ streaming. It’d be massive and it’ll probably break Matricks 200m+ Goal.

Funny enough Sony kinda tried this but half assed it like most of the stuff Sony HQ does. Microsoft will make Sony better this gen.

I swear this forum is the most cancerous Sony fanboy hive of the internet. How can Sony fanboys be so arrogant?

I guess it was ok when Sony cut deals to have bloodborne as an exclusive and leave the largest souls fanbase (PC) without the game right?

As a pc only gamer I don't like third parties being bought, money hats or exclusives but if these MS moves make Sony eat some humble pie this generation I will be happy.

Fuck japs and their walled gardens.

They put their games on Xbox and on Xbox on PC. They have put the odd Nintendo style games on Switch, but Nintendo are their own thing. Minecraft games are the only thing on Playstation, and Minecraft was already on Playstation before Microsoft bought them. Minecraft is also very much played by small kids, which is the target audience. It makes sense for Dungeons to do the same. In fact any Minecraft related game will probably do the same.

Like i said earlier, IMO the only way PS5 sees Bethesda games is if Sony allow Gamepass on PS5, and i just cant see them doing that.

Looks like MS are moving beyond simply XBox as a hardware platform. It really is an uphill battle against Sony and Nintendo. I mean, they only entered the console space as an attempt to get an OS strangle-hold in the lounge (they'd pretty much cornered the PC OS space).

If Sony were willing to have Gamepass on Playstation hardware, do you think MS would say no? They'd jump at the chance. They are fundamentally an OS/Software company. They see future platforms being software-based (whether that's an OS or even a Store/Walled-garden). The question is, do Sony..?
