[Push Square] Sony's lack of communication is becoming an issue

Ahead of the Japanese hands on, this video was dropped yesterday

Opens with:
  • Says last time we heard from Sony was 16th September which was an apology about preorders.
  • Some outlets have broken news on accessories, price games, cross gen releases etc
  • Confirmation that the PS5 wasn't BC with PS1/2/3
  • Complains that all this information is buried in various tweets, news snippets and being left out of the 'showcases'
  • Some people paid hundred and hundreds of dollars for something we know very little about

Segues into:
  • What's going on and how can Sony improve in the run up to launch?
  • Begs for likes and subs.....
  • Excited for release, only 45 or so days away but Sony has lost all momentum following its showcase (again)
  • Felt Sony needed to keep the cycle and news rolling until release, instead of going quiet
  • Lists stuff we don't know about the PS5 (UI, BC and repurchasing TLOU/GoT/ console apps and features, how is create different to share, no info on launch titles like sackboy/all stars despite being launch titles for £70, which non-proprietary drives are available - if any)
  • Acknowledges not everyone wants to know this, happy to wait and be surprised
  • For him personally he falls on the side of not knowing enough
  • Compares to Microsoft and the Series X campaign which has been a lot more forthright (even if that news is not great e.g. no strong fist party next gen launch, price of SSD).
  • Microsoft haven't been superb but have been significantly less worse.
  • Explains he's liked the showcases as individual shows of quality, but there just isn't enough supplementary information/events

Finishes with
  • Demo of UI, show these unique features they've been speaking about since March
  • Smart installation of part of games (single player/multi player portions)
  • More information and gameplay in context of Destruction: All Stars and Sackboy
  • Are PlayStation Now and PS+ staying the same or evolving?
  • Is PSVR2 coming anytime soon?
  • Storage solutions and even an 'expected' price.
  • Wants Sony to drop the vow of silence and start running the launch cycle of constant news and gear up to get us all excited
  • If Sony wants to keep pace with Microsoft and not be drowned out they need to start talking soon

I do feel he has a few valid points as someone who has got the DE coming on the 19th. It's not like anything extreme, it just seems we're missing out on knowing some of those details to get excited about and glancing over at all the news coming from Microsoft to their fans. Especially after things like folders to the UI took so long to come on PS4. Even the hands-on on the 4th is going to be difficult to follow unless you speak Japanese and we're more hoping we see menu's and UIs as general use rather than knowing.

Makes some good points without going into console war territory I feel.

Sony have their schedule and they are sticking to it.

What is it?

Does someone force people to order PS5 ?

For me personally there's enough information to pre-order.
I don't need to see the UI and complete disassembly video to make a decision.

If there's not enough info for you personally - don't pre-order.

People are getting more whiny and more touchy with every hour now.

Out of absolutely everything and anything to do with the new console launch Sony has done the most important thing of all and they've done it very, very well. They've brought the games. We've seen a stellar lineup of launch and first year games. We've got an entire month and a half before the PS5 launches and all signs point to the floodgates opening next week with people getting hands on experience with the PS5.

says GAF is a racist board but still wants to be a part of it...
I think Sony prefers to rely on the PS5 hype. This enable them to not address subjects like crossgen, PS4 saves, next gen upgrades, backward compatibility, etc.

This lack of visibility on a new hardware is unprecedented. But hype is through the roof so why would they care ?

I think this could backfire post launch. We will see.

He's not wrong. Sony's lack of communication paired with that horrendously huge and ugly console has made me decide to wait till the games I care about have arrived.

Hopefully a slim model and/or a black model is out before then, but I'm not gonna hold out hope.

I have a big back log, I'll be happy enough playing enhanced bc games on series x for a while, in addition to multiplat games.

Its becoming an issue for them. They are PlayStation journos who are entitled to represent the consumer.

We are moving into a an error where Marketing info needs to drop in narrower windows now. All the big companies are seeing this strategy works best, most cost effective in these times.

Its pretty simple, Don't put money down for something you don't have enough info on. But that will never happen right.

Pre-orders are sold out in most of the places you could pre-order.

Sony's lack of communication is deliberate to skirt negative publicity over the PS5s enormous size, weaker specs, "we believe in generations" nonsense and underwhelming BC.

The PS5 will sell shittons regardless and only a relatively small number of enthusiasts, many of whom are too personally invested in Sony to change, will care that much.

Owned by Gamer Network, who also own Digital Foundry, VG247, Outside Xbox, Outside Xtra, US Gamer, Eurogamer and others.

All of them have been heavily pro Xbox, at least lately. Some forever.

As confusing as some of their messaging has been just wait until the 4th.

The Japanese YouTubers who do the preview will have every single word they say attempt to be translated into a variety of languages.

And we all know how that goes.

One translation will say one thing, someone else will say that's an incorrect translation and say something else, fanboys will latch on to and twist any incorrect translation they can contort to attempt to conform to their narrative, and everyone will be even more confused in the end.

Example:
Japanese YouTubers "The PS5 isso bigaru"
"He thinks its going to be a success!"
"No he just means its fucking huge."

All according to keikaku.

Well what can I say it seems they are lacking behind in several areas (UI, pace of the news, communication in general, social media etc.) and in some areas they are delivering like showing next gen games running on actual hardware. Still need to see that for XSX.

Its not a smooth ride for Sony, all apects were handled way better with the PS4. Yes I know we have a Covid-19 situation but so has Microsoft. I think that Jim Ryan dropped the ball and I have my big doubts about him and his leadership skills. Time will tell.

PS5 pre-orders are sold out, and based on the rush to get them, they'll continue to be sold for the next six months. Sony are done. They doesn't need to talk about a thing; they've already made literally all the money they can make for the next three months without having talked about any of things in this article. The could go radio silent from here till June next year, and nothing changes for any body - including the authour. Microsoft are showing off their console and talking about its features to maintain their narrative and momentum, because they know they have to. If they didn't, Sony could crush their entire narrative with an instragram picture of the backside of the DualSense. Right now, the sheer momentum of the PlayStation 4 will carry the PS5 to 10 million sales before June. Sony aren't talking, because there's no reason to, and they just run the risk screwing their messaging up like "We believe in generations". Sitting back and counting money until they've got new first party exclusives to sell is their best course of action right now.

If they can get them to market, they can do 10 million before Christmas or by march if they can't hit Christmas.

Thing is that is just doesn't matter. Both systems are sold out. So there's no need for momentum. Everything will be clear when the system is released.

PS5 is sold out everywhere. Even the whiny people who constantly cry about the lack of communication have one preordered or will buy one. I know It's not fine but that's the truth.
Hands on videos on sunday you cry babies.

Sony have their schedule and they are sticking to it.

This. It's their marketing plan. I imagine the UI is being kept secret so none of its features end up on Xbox at launch. I bet in the last few weeks to launch we will get bombarded with information. They will crank the advertising up to 11.

Yeah. I don't think its fair to their loyal customer base, as some of this information can impact their planning or purchases. I will give you my example. I am waiting for Sony to announce/communicate if game saves from PS4 will go to PS5. I have at least 15 games on my Ps4Pro where I'm half-way through. My plan was to move them to PS5 and continue from there. In that case I could get rid (sell or trade-in) of my Pro before PS5 comes out.

PS5 situation is really bad.
The only next gen game is Ratchet and it is just good, it's not a launch title and I feel we won't see it in the launch window before March 31.
Then too much games compatible with PS4 or developed on PS4 and ported to PS5 in their final stage.
Godfall seems good, but it's not for everyone. Demon's Souls is clearly developed on PS4. Spiderman is a PS4 game with raytraced puddles.
Fornite, Astro's Playroom and Sackboy are embarassing. No info at all about Destruction All Stars, the PS5's Fantavision.

And after that? Almost no info about any other releases. Just PS4 games for another year, and maybe more.

PS2 launch, which is considered one of the worst launch ever with few good games for about one year . But at least you had PS2 games on PS2 console.

Sony are in trouble, despite technically still being a market leader. Ball is in their court to make a big financial move they don't want to make.

lol do you honestly think Sony gives a shit about these whiney fanboys who still preorder with or without information.

If they cared that much, dont pre-order, send Sony a message. However, we all did.

No, it is not an issue.

A few ten thousands of people on gaming boards :
* have some people concerned.
* have some people impressed by SSD speeds and specs
* have some people impressed by Bethesda acquisition
* don't know Halo has been delayed
* don't actually care whether SONY (or MS) makes any annoucements
because they actually don't care and don't watch the announcements anyway.

They don't care about a few thousand people. Both of them aim to 100Million customers this cycle.
Whatever a few thousand people on the internet think is not even on the roadmap.

I care though. I want the PS5 launch to be super successful so that all interest in PS4 will die off quickly.
That will cause a situation where PS4 games are "too old" for causal players and "too new" for collectors
so price of games should drop like a lead balloon.
Maybe this will make it cheap enough so that a full collection of every single physical released PS4 game will be in reach
for me! (I have given up that plan for PS1 sadly.) The dream is still alive!
