CDPR institutes mandatory six-day work weeks for Cyberpunk 2077

It's funny to see people getting all up in arms because one "journalist" who won't write an article unless it's drama, who always had a horse in this race, and who is known to carry giant bias on this topic, says something is true without providing a shred of evidence. It's almost like critical thinking doesn't exist anymore.

Even assuming it's true, a bit over a month working one more day a week with paid overtime? the tragedy! 😂

I work 7 days a week as a 911 operator most weeks with everyone getting quarantined. 12 hours a day for the next week as well. I still get my 1.5 hours in the gym on top of that. They'll be ok.

Yeah as long as they're getting paid for it, they'll survive. Plus as long as they can take some time off afterwards. My girlfriend is in tech consulting and she had crazy crunch for 2 months and then had an entire month off fully paid. It's give and take I guess.

I feel like if you have the skills to be a developer at a studio like CDPR you could leave for a non-gaming job and work 9-5 with a good salary.

When you have a deadline to hit, its all hands on deck. End of story.

No doubt they all signed the EU Working Hours limit waiver as part of their employment contract, been standard for decades because crunch is basically unavoidable when milestones are involved.

Cry me a fucking river, anyone on a project as high-profile as Cyberpunk knows what they are getting into and the consequences of being able to stick it on their CV's when its all done.

We are being roped into supporting another delay of this game.... which is frankly garbage.

They should fire whoever is in charge of planning the work..... they operate in a bubble and clearly have no idea of the scope of the work or capability of the staff.

Plan and execute.

If they delay again, wouldn't that be like the 4th or 5th time.

Can't believe it was June 2019 when Keanu Reeves did the E3 announcement for April 2020 release.

I don't think their release deadline planning was very good.

Yep, some companies think burn out and morale does not exist

The "unavoidable" need of crunch time are just mismanagement that gets transfered onto the workers backs. It is more and more common for the suits to set unrealistic deadlines on purpose and make the push to the limit a standard procedure.

Well, well, well, look what we got here. Seems like CDPR isn't the Holy Spirit of video game developers after all. Only the very best, with just the right amount of dirty!

I have zero issues with this whatsoever.

I work 7 days a week across 2 jobs, but I chose to do this and am paid very well for my work. As a matter of fact I'm looking to pick up a 3rd job in the future.

These game developers are paid more for working extra to finish a game. Don't like it? You can always quit.

It is not a crime to ask your employees to work more to finish a project. It's also not a sin to choose to work more.

Different countries, different cultures. Those who are outraged should look into Poland's history since the fall of the USSR.

Poland had to crawl it's way out from the bottom.

edit: And I mean the absolute rock fucking bottom, Poland didn't have west Germany to coddle them which was built back up by the west like East Germany did.

Absolutely fuck that. I'd be out.

I don't know what Polish developer salaries are like or how they compare to other jobs, but a US firm's equivalent would approach or exceed $100k. Working a few months of "crunch" once every 3-5 years is hardly a "fuck this I'm out". Anyone who feels that way should go be a roofer or concreter for a summer and see how bad "crunch" in an air conditioned office with $1000 Herman Miller chairs, gratis snack bars, gyms/recreation zones, and nap corners really is.

I never understand the issue with this( Apart from asshole Jason moaning as usual) as long as folks are getting compensated via overtime etc.

Software Development is one of the most difficult to project manage in terms of time.
Im doing software development for over 20 years and ive never seen a project delivered on time.

That's not the point and is a false equivalency. CDPR has money but they're no Ford Motors in 1926 when there was basically no competition nor a huge monopoly worth billions like Microsoft. There's stakes at play.

Polish attitude is to do anything to stay on top because they don't want to go back to the days of the fall of the USSR no matter the cost. (Whatever it takes) is the motto. You will see this in many other Polish industries where they artificially lower their own wages to compete against Asia in manufacturing.

So if having a 6 day work gives them a edge in staying competitive edge then so be it. That's what they're belief is. People know whats at stake at CDPR which is why they're determined and it shows in the output of quality in their games.

The international market place is cut throat and has no place for the timid. edit: Especially for those who wish to remain independent.

Not sure how I feel about them being “mandatory” but maybe encouraged? I’ve been working 6 days a week for about half this year from being busy as hell from covid. Turns out there’s a lot of people like myself that want the extra hours. But TBH I wouldn’t want them forced on me.

Crunch sucks, especially when they delivered such an anti message in their culture. However, extra income during this pandemic? solid work? a lot of people in the world (at least here) would kill for that. To not be locked down and be able to earn some extra cash, guaranteed work?

Que the Jimpressions video in 3 2 1 ..

It's getting a bit late to delay the game isn't it?. They obviously want to avoid delaying this ambitious project. Maybe too ambitious.

Are the people of Re-Era boycotting the game yet? or is forced Crunch okay.. (I kid I kid)

I am so tired of lazy fucking people.

Holy shit... so now CDPR’s employees are lazy?

Dude, CDPR are a bunch of lying fucks. They say one thing, then do another. They only said they’d never make their employees crunch because it made them look cool. They don’t fucking care about their employees. It was just more pr bullshit.

And you want to flip that, and actually blame CDPR’s employees? Un-fucking-believable, dude.

He might have been talking about people up in arms about a major software developer needing to do six days a week for a month or two. That's really not that bad.

Holy shit... so now CDPR’s employees are lazy?

I would hope and assume and guess not at all. They put out good games packed with content. That doesn't square with "lazy people".

More importantly, since you seem to know, how would you know?

Dude, CDPR are a bunch of lying fucks.

You're not talking about the downgrade, are you?
Present evidence they've since lied in other areas and also prove intention to deceive, you know, the definition of lying.

Who is blaming CDPR employees for what?

no numbnutz. sorry if i wasnt clear, the sideline sissies and journalists complaining about game finishing crunch. and whatever about cdpr not caring about employees, who said that? Do you work in software, did you know software is hard? do you know meeting deadlines and goals for complicated software is fucking difficult... sometimes you have to put in extra work to produce a nice product and be proud of your work...

it happens, it's not like it's nine months, its 60 days it's one extra day a week, people need to pull up some fucking bootstraps around this fucking place.

Nah, just stop. This whole strawman of "prove intent to deceive" basically ask someone to be a fucking mind reader to argue if someone is lying or something. Omitting known information that is relevant to the consumers purchase is lying.

yet claimed this.

So I find it a bit odd that they day after the fucking game comes out and they took people's money, oh NOW they can confirm a downgrade? Oh so...not a single day prior to that they could do that, but only after they took people's money they could officially tell you this? Never before huh? :pie_raybans:

Present evidence that was their intention and that they were deliberately trying to deceive.

Well their intent wasn't to help consumers by knowing about a downgrade yet saying nothing. You telling me on their own game during development before release they had no clue the state of the game, yet magically remember its been downgraded after they took your money? Oh...sooooo you HAVE to know 100% that they did it to deceive ie mind read in order for it to really be lying? Thats a lot of hoops to jump thru bud.

Shit, I own Witcher 3 day 1, I own the whole series, have Cyberpunk 2077 pre-ordered and have for years btw, but I won't pretend omitting such information to fans is not a lie.

I have a hard time understanding how not confirming the actual state of your game, until after to you took fans money is not a lie as who the fuck else would know the current state of this game before release besides the actual developers themselves? So I think many might have to concede to this shit. They are not perfect, they are not honest and they have a history of saying one thing and doing another. Its why I even told people look out for those removed features and what do you know....here is a list of removed and cut content.... I don't hate the developer, but I must be honest with what I see from the developer and I feel many gamers allow their like of the developer to cloud their judgment.

I mean shit, I'm not a mind reader, I'm not a fortune teller, I can't see the future, I'm not a insider etc, yet clearly I called out they'd have removed, cut content etc. Many of you don't see it cause you don't want to, its why some of us even warned this would happen and it sounds like lots of what was predicted is happening as again, they have history of this shit.

I think it makes getting Cyberpunk 2077 much smoother as my expectations are intact and not wild.

I don't care as long as the game is good. There is worker exploitation and mistreatment everywhere. Most people including myself have experienced it first hand. Right now we are essentially looking at 8 extra days of work over the course of a month and a half so they can get this game out when they want it after a big delay already.

Cant wait to see all the people posting from their iPhones about how we shouldn't support CDPR now because of worker mistreatment.

From the article:

“Meanwhile, according to an unnamed CD Projekt Red staffer speaking to Bloomberg, some workers have been crunching more over a year.”

“That's despite co-founder Marcin Iwiński saying last year that the studio would keep to a "non-obligatory crunch policy" in the later stages of Cyberpunk 2077's development.”

Seems pretty obvious that CDPR are liars - so why are we attacking their employees???

I’ll just repost what I’ve written before.

There’s absolutely nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with crunch. I love crunch. Crunch gets things done.

students crunch during thesis/dissertation
Doctors crunch during crisis e.g. corona virus, mass shooting, etc
Army crunch during war

everyone crunches. I don’t get why game developers crunch is somehow different. More so they’re paid extremely well. They should shut the fuck up and make my game. Crunch motherfucker, Crunch.

It's pretty obvious by now that CDPR bit off more than they could chew. Numerous delays and now this. However, if the game comes out as a modern day masterpiece I guarantee that everyone will say it was worth it. Being in a creative position is hard as fuck, from literature to movies to games. Everything can happen and you gotta put in the hours.
It was the same deal with Witcher 3, and the game turned out to be pretty good. I don't know if it's them biting off more than they can chew, but more that they just are not very good at time management or deadlines.

Don’t see any issue with this, many industries have to do this on occasion to push something out on time. Many people I know do this voluntarily in order to pay the bills, 6-7 days a week, extra hours in day. Don’t get all this ‘crunch’ stuff, normal people call it overtime.
