We are back to cartridge loading times with PS5.

Nice! I hope it loads just as fast on whatever the closest to proprietary nvme will be for add on storage.

It will load so fast that the game will be confused and not function properly and thus needs to load again. And then we are back to square one.

Epic Games VP of engineering, Nick Penwarden, revealed that the PS5's SSD is so fast that Epic had to rewrite some of Unreal Engine 5

The SSD may have been a bit too powerful. I think it will take some time before devs can harness the real capabilities.

To be honest that doesn't cut it for me anymore. This is just not enough to make me buy a console Day 1.
I am just going to wait until Q1/2021 and review if it makes sense buying the console.
It's the same for XBOX, I am not going to buy GamesPass for lukewarm last gen content, just faster, cleaner - so what? I have a PC...- let alone buying that console. For what? I am really not following this. and HOW in the actual world can you look at ASTRO and be hyped about loading times, excuse me WHAT?!
Most of the discussed titles are really old games with no reason at all for the majority of the gaming culture to play them and frankly, I am not going to pay again for something already played long enough on previous Generation Console or PC. I see 0 value proposition at this point in time for a person who owned any console of the last generations and played all games necessary to be played in the last couple of years...

Isn't this a forum where people have a strong stake in playing games? How can you be SOOO "out of context" that you really still need to play RDR2 or GTA or Gears or what have you, how can the GamesPass be SUCH a good value proposition for us, right here right now. I am not talking about people who play 1 game per year and how can be a loading time scenario push you so hard for buying a game? Is it going to allow for so much content for you loading faster?

I am sorry for jumping so much between thoughts, but it really blows my mind how anyone can be fond of any value proposition right now that any of the "big shots" on the console market has put out. Right now, the value proposition is 0- Blews-my-mind reading all these thoughts every day and all these threads about Loading Times, Year Old Games Coming our way !! (wow!!) and LED lights glowing red on a controller.

Pretty bad for such revolutionary SSD, but then again it's from Gearbox (Godfall). And even it looks bad.

Astrobot looks like it fits whole game into RAM pool, so nothing revolutionary.

I remember sitting through loading times on the Amiga and dreaming of the future! No loading times is something we gamers have always wanted. So good job Sony if you manage to do this with the powerful ps5's ssd!

PS5 will beat series x by a wide margin with loading, the velocity architecture has yet to prove itself that it can eliminate all the bottlenecks.

Cerny said they may have to slow transitions down as they can be too jarring.

You can see the game load and then animations kick in to end the loading screen, a bit like ratchet with the dimensions. Aprox 2 seconds all in will be ps5 loading this gen.

Yeah i'm with you, even Crash Bandicoot 4 can instantly spawn you back in the level after death, how is Astro so special?

These threads feel like an attempt to make it greater than it is. I'll wait to see independant reviews first.

Asotrobot is that type of game, which could ran in 720p res on PS3 and just now in 4k on PS5. Both companies have poor showing, however if you have actually games, like Demon's Souls, what the fuck is this game, why would you show them?

Demon's Souls warp is still the best example so far. Shit is not only near instant, but the transition looks sick too.

Loading times are not system dependent. They are game dependent.

Soon, devs are going to push the data to new limits for "acceptable" loading times. It's the same thing as frame-rate. It's not the system that is responsible but what the developer decides to do with it.

It's kind of like those little demo discs you would get when buying a magazine or new game back in the early 2000's :messenger_tears_of_joy:. Not saying it's bad don't get me wrong, many of my favourite games were demo discs, but its a glorified controller demo.

Both consoles are near instant

Not really a bragging point

If both load games in under 10secs its not even a talking point tbh

Well it was probably your favorite games, because you have nothing else, I would wager. Well depends on your age.

But the old consoles had virtually no loading times. Sony is more bringing something back. It's cool either way.

Almost 4 seconds is instant? Also, do we have loading times for full AAA games, like doom eternal or so?

I'd say Doom could take between somewhere around 50 seconds to 2 minutes. That SSD is only good for stupid little games like Demon's Souls, R&C, Spiderman, Godfall, NBA 2K21... oh, and Astrobot.

Dude what? I had literally hundreds of PS1 & PS2 games, an actual massive box full of them.
Well I don't know, because at time of PS2, my friend has nothing else then games from magazines, so we always played something totally random and it was mazing, because that's all we got : D It was not meant to be mean in agressive way : )

It's not like frame rate. There's a limit on the max amount of data you could be bringing in at once. The RAM isn't unlimited.

Skeptical until someone with free access to the hardware and OS, someone like Digital Foundry makes a video.
Then let's see a PS5 loading a 3rd party PS4 title where we can compare loading times to Series X. So we get some actual metrics instead of marketing spin.
