With all due respect to Jason sometimes he can come off as a man child. People have to crunch on all kind of projects before submission/publishing date. It is a process i guess most people are used to since university days.

As long as developers are given a fair remuneration for the extra time they put it in, i honestly see no issue. I work in technology design sector and sometimes it is what it is you have deadline you have to make, but i get paid for it.

Ya but on the above tweets he does have a point, getting called off about having an agenda while the other guy is shilling for cd.

Also crunshing is a systemic thing that has been rooted in us since school to university to work. Multiple deadlines limited time, it is something that we have been dealing with for some time now.

i wonder if you could make a fan to take in heat like a heat sink, and disperse it as it spins , two alternate metals, different surface area design , that still incorporates vacuum. two birds one fan. hmmm.

Fansinks aren't particularly efficient, as you want maximum surface area to absorb the heat. Fans, by design, require gaps between the blades, in order to move air through. This means those gaps reduce surface area for heat absorption.

Wouldnt an object producing heat need to transfer heat to be cool? Is there a way to cool these consoles without "hot" air being exhausted?

The heat pipes radiate heat into the air. That's why you need a fan to exhaust the air from the case, otherwise you have a buildup of hot air in the case. The purpose of fans is to push hot air out, and pull cold air in. The cold air gets hot, and leaves the case, while new cold air come in to replace it, and continue the cycle.

Maybe I'm not understanding you properly.

The heat pipes transfer the heat away from the CPU/GPU but also reduces the temperature as well. Fans can assist with the cooling though it isn't necessarily required. Your phone, for example, is passively cooled by just using good thermal management and doesn't require a fan. Here's my laptop with the back off for an example:

Because it is bad in all senses.

1) It is bad for your health.
2) It decrease your production in the company and increase your mistakes/errors.
3) It is bad for your social/family life.
4) It is mandatory and discriminative (even companies that says it is optional will reward these that do and fire first these that don't).
5) It is a big project failure/fault.

Deadlines needs to be made with spare time and you need to manage it right to not break it... so you will never need crush... in fact I never had to do any crunch in school or university... I have in most cases done my university work way before the deadline so I could revise it multiple times.

If you are having to crunch in school/universities either the deadline is wrong (hard to be believe because it is overestimated) or you are doing something wrong in your work (like not doing your every day estimated hours and letting everything to the last few days).

Crunch should never exists if the project is estimated right for the amount of manpower you have the company.
But what these companies do? Create project to 100 manpower when they have only 30 manpower... so everybody needs to mandatory crunch when you just need to reestimate you project for 30 manpower.

It's like overtime. Some people love it, some people don't need the extra money, and want to get home to their families/pets. Crunch maybe be declared optional, but realistically, it's mandatory overtime, because your peers and supervisors will note your absence/unwillingness, and that's a quick trip to the exit for you. Why keep the piker, when there are other people who will work the extra hours? It's not particularly healthy having work absorb 6/7 of your week, with little payoff besides your regular salary (maybe +50%). The people on top are cashing the big checks, and not committing the same hours.

I work for a company that's emerged from startup status the past few years, but my first year was a 7 day, nearly-round-the-clock commitment. It was just 3 of us, and we had thousands of users. I put in the time, because I wanted to help my friend, and I know there are founder shares at the end of this journey. There's no guarantee of a cash windfall for people who make our games. Yeah, they can find another job if they don't like it, but I'm not willing to toss hard-working people into a meat grinder, just so I can get my jollies in front of my tv. It is what it is, but we can all wish it was better.

i mean if they would just do a resolution/framerate bump then yeah i would expect free upgrade... just like we got free Pro upgrades

Never bought the pro. Not sure how the pro upgrades work. I thought it was just frame rates at 60 & clearer picture image. Nothing more.

Lets hope boosted mode means what you want. In my mind all they were doing for PS5 was unlocking frames. They are not going to be doing remastered type work with no payment.

Err no.
The only thing that it means is your project management sucks.
Not diverge a lot from the topic at hand, sometimes people have to work nearly 40 hours "part-time" job to pay for their studies that was my choice not get a loan Which was my experiance, hence i always felt i was in crunch mode. So maybe i should look at it more sympathetically.

There is a difference between crunch for the final few weeks of a project vs a year long crunch which has been pretty standard in this industry. Yes, i have worked weekends and put in 16 hour days at work but if i did that for months, let alone a full year I would be burned out and probably hospitalized. some month long crunch have been detrimental to my health. not mental health, health. i actually saw a colleague hospitalized in the middle of a crunch period. If we had gone a few more weeks, I wouldve been next.

and again, this is just for a month or 6 weeks max. we were promised bonuses but they didnt matter. it was not worth it.

Jason is right to call out cd project for going back on their no crunch pledge. doesnt matter if its for weeks or months or if they are getting overtime. if journalists dont report on this, then who will.

I'm not triggered at all. In fact that could even be the first one, we have no idea. If you have a smooth manufacturing process September would be fine, honestly, you only get the run-up time once, so you have to be able to produce what you sell on a month-to-month basis after launch anyhow. It's just funny because there is nothing to indicate that it is from the first run.

What could this mean for next gen consoles more so PS5, could mean nothing... Could mean everything, would explain why Sony stayed with 448Gb/s RAM for example.

Regarding load times of BC titles, I think PS5 will offer slightly better performance than XSX here because I believe games needs to be patched or optimized to take "full" effect of the new SSD hardware.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong though
Almost the correct conclusion. The IO is no longer the limit for BC unpatched BC games (even an external SSD is only 0.x seconds slower). So the only think that have still an effect on load times is the CPU & RAM. Both are faster on XSX, so XSX should always be faster here (if there is not some sort of overhead from windows in the background). Also PS5 has a PS4 & PS4 Pro compatibility mode with lower clocks. So if you don't activate the boost mode the difference will be even bigger (just for BC games).

This changes with patches that take advantage of the higher IO-Speed. But I really doubt we will see any IO limited games in the near future on any of those systems.

So I'm seeing talk of the bandwidth of the next-gen consoles especially with the PS5 and it's 448 GB/s of memory bandwidth. RedGamingTech a while back leaked that the next generation RDNA 2 cards will not feature the HBM memory, which is AMD's answer to GDDR6X however the RDNA 2 cards themselves would not have bandwidth problems because they'll feature an "Infinity Cache", which is 128 MB of cache on the chip, which is a lot and that this will mitigate the problem of not featuring high bandwidth memory. He leaked the term "Infinity Cache" a few weeks ago as well and today's patent filed by AMD proved he was indeed correct so hats off to him.

As for the PS5 he did mention that the PS5 was NOT having memory bandwidth issues because of the "robust caching system" and this was some how was also linked to RDNA 3 however Paul didn't go into detail about it. However he did add that despite the PS5 not having bandwidth issues developers were not exactly saying "we have enough bandwidth", of course more is always better.
