DF PS5 analysis (prepare to be uninterested)

It's not lecturing. It's just describing what's going on this gen with the two main companies. They have different systems and different marketing strategies. They literally just explain it and compare it as clinically and unemotionally as possible.

Oh my sweet summer child

I think it's great that we have two consoles with completely different design approaches. Current gen is super boring in comparison.

Really looking forward to an actual comparison in a month.

I'm surprised they didn't bring up the superspeed usb for comparison. That, in theory, should cut transfer speeds down quite a bit. PS5 and XSX owners will be doing this a lot I imagine.

Very good point Mark! What's the speed difference if you know?

Have to say I disagree with Richard about the PS5 being a "significantly simpler setup" than XSX. Both consoles are an evolution of the PS4 Pro and One X IMO. Microsoft then chose to reorientate the system vertically which meant splitting the motherboard and using a central heatsink spine. I wouldn't really call it reinventing the wheel, though.

Also the first few minutes of this video confirm what I was talking about yesterday with DF really not being happy with how Sony have been handling the PS5 info rollout directly compared to Microsoft (to all game press it has to be said) but I do wonder if there is a little extra beef between DF and Sony here. I guess we'll never know. The tidbit about the PS5 SSD capacity also irks me a little too as why didn't he disclose this before and why wait until a still unconfirmed Russian leak?

I think in the end Sony will just send the game press a console to test at the end of this month without any fanfare and without any notice. Just like they have randomly released info/videos/blogs up to this point.

Why is the SSD being soldered to the motherboard a concern?

It's interesting how I recall that the last time anyone from Sony answered Richard's questions, he posted a misleading (and in fact unapplicable) benchmark to discredit this person's answers along with the interview.

And now he complains about Sony not answering their questions? Right.

Make no mistakes, the fact that this commentary on the PS5 teardown mentions and flatters the XSX so much has nothing to do with Sony's silence, other than provide a very simple explanation for it.
When was this? Curious to see it and what exactly he screwed up. I bet they regret it if true

Looking at the replies in this thread and I see a lot of shitposting saying people will complain even though they made the video, completely missing the point.

This video was made begrudgingly, only after forums like this one were blowing up over them dismissing the first look inside the ps5 as fucking UNINTERESTING!

They made the video, hooray! But I've already watched several other videos on this, they need to move faster and not dismiss interesting information next time simply because they aren't being given an exclusive.

Great video. Love how they brought up their concern with the soldered SSD, but not a peep about it in their XSX teardown. Not to mention bringing up unverified leaks about the storage size and the *deleted* tweet from xbox marketing. Thanks DF for the professionalism!

XsX has soldered SSD? How come we didn’t know that if that teardown was months ago 🤔

Good video. I liked his approach and comparisons between consoles seem fair.

The only point I disagree on is that the xsx is a more complicated design than the ps5, insofar as fit. The xsx seemed like a more straightforward thought process in terms of air in and hot air out vs PS5. I would put money on the ps5 being quieter and cooler vs the xsx, though that comparison maybe unfair, seems as the xsx is ejecting air through a smaller channel.

Hopefully they're both quiet

The channeling is almost non existent. The air intake is literally right next to the heatsink and APU. Not a systems engineer but that seems like a notable compromise.

This is a "Wow, it's fucking nothing" video.

The bitterness at the end is very palpable...
Bitterness? He just says they don't have it and will wait to cast judgement on the size/heft

Poor John, I really feel sorry for these guys and I feel like there's a lot of childish hate for them especially on this forum.

The harassment is lame but cmon John, terrified? Man up bro, covering the new consoles aint Omaha beach son.

They need to reel Alex Battlestar back in then. Their own guy is heating the flames of the console wars. I'm sure D dark10x has noticed this.

John needs to get off twitter for his own health.

And THIS too! Hey D dark10x please watch The Social Dilemma on Netflix and realize that you don't have to keep doing this on social media. It's hurting your mental health man. Just post content and disable the comment section. Or try not to follow what people say about your content.

It's NOT healthy for you.

"Man up bro" is pretty disrespectful imo, not everyone has "thick skin" like you!

Such harrassment over a piece of plastic is unecessary and childish, period.

To be fair, it's more than a piece of plastic.

Guess the budget of fanboys is really bleeding that they have violently attack everybody who doesn't praise PS4 that much because they want to justify their purchase. I wonder why though..
But they will have to pay 80 euro (I am also pissed but that's a separate matter lol) each time they want to buy a game :messenger_tears_of_joy:

To be fair, it's more than a piece of plastic.
Holy Grail then? Guess we have found one this time :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This made me laugh lol.

I was quite disappointed because I went expecting a video about the PS5 and not a bunch of comparisons against the XSX and how MS is letting DF have the hardware, and etc, etc. But, on the flip side, like Richard likes to say, he confirmed that devkits have roughly the same storage as the UI leak.

I just think if the thing you're most terrified of is console warriors saying mean things to on the internet then you're in a pretty good place tbh.
It's not one or another, its often times both. When you already feel down by bad stuff in life, such comments from console warriors will accelerate harmful thinking.

Stay off twitter when you're on a downer then, it's just common sense most of us learned a long arse time ago

Amazed in the other thread we were discussing about it with R Redlight and not even a week later yet another example of how the coverage is always more cynical on one side than the other...

Your comment sums it up. Still didn’t mention USB speeds or dram. Interesting
Actually the heatsink is impressive if you read about how it's constructed. Plus the fact that they used two different materials for the board for cooling is also pretty interesting.

Overall I think he left out some stuff that I thought he or they could analyze. I guess according to what he mentioned, he’s a journalist so he needs to relay information rather than analyzing or interpreting. I guess I thought their site was more technical than that. But he ended up finding the teardown interesting. At least enough to make a video this late. Also, he mentioned a “shadowy NDA “ which nobody has mentioned yet.

That's one way to look at it. Though generally, I tend to consider systems that have to compact their components into tighter spaces (and still ensure regular performance and heat dissipation) as being somewhat more complicated to engineer. A lot of people are mistaken on some aspects of XSX from that system's teardown vid: MS added some magnetized components to the parts so that they'd stick together easily. I doubt an actual retail XSX would have those components (it would be neat if it did, though).

I still think it's up in the air which system actually runs quieter or cooler. Regarding the PS5 heatsink, they seemingly wanted vapor cooling levels of performance, but went with (what I'd assume is) a cheaper alternative with some custom engineering applied to save costs. But there's no telling how that'll work, and if some of the other things we've heard the past few days are true, PS5 has a higher ambient and full load operating temperature (by 3 degrees Celsius on both ends). Of course that only refers to heat generation; the actual fan setup could indeed help it run cooler, we'll just have to wait and see.

............

Interestingly Rich thinks PS5's APU is ~ 305mm^2 - 310mm^2. I know very early estimates were 320mm^2, and then on Twitter Rogame estimated it was actually 286mm^2 ! Hard to say who is right on this :pie_worried:
