Sony now warns users that others may record voice party chats on PSN

“If you emit sound waves, in the presence of human beings who are able and willing may record said sound waves. In other news, water is wet and people still cry over stupid shit they read far too much into.”
In more accurate news, water is actually not wet. Being a liquid, water is not itself wet, but can make other solid materials wet.

Seems much ado about nothing.
If you're in a party you should know the person(s) to some degree and have an idea of what you should or should not say.

Sad that Xbox and/or their fans feel the need to do this tho, right?

Please read?

I'm referring to the other issues that came along with this update. Sony have been taking a lot of hits as of late. I've been primarily playing Playstation for 20 years. I haven't owned an xbox since 360.

How dense you have to be to think this is some revelation? Party chat has always had the option to block your voice from other people streams and recordings if they are using the PS4 recording or streaming functions, it was always set not share by default. This warning it's just giving some extra warning to users.
Please, tell me OP , what it's new or horrible about this?

They are just warning you about the fact that even party chat can be used as a ban hammer but they don't state that they are monitoring it but that other users might rat you out.

Goddammit people are gullible.

How is this even a thread? This is possible 100% of the time when you play on a PC...

On PS4 you have the option to opt out of being recorded while in game. I have a few friends that upload a lot of gameplay of R6 Siege which is very chat heavy - there's lots of communicating all the time. I opt out of this so my voice isn't included in the uploads. I don't think it's unreasonble to expect this feature to extend to party chats too.

Good. Some stupid kids ruin what are otherwise enjoyable parties. This might make games like FIFA more enjoyable online, as you can just report the dumbass who keeps shouting racist shit over and over. You can't always get a group of friends together for certain games, and public chats are a necessity. But there are far too many unsupervised kids allowed to carry on like dicks, when all the rest of us want to do is communicate team strategy properly via voice chat. I wonder if this has been an option for a while, or if it's just new.
Reading is difficult aye?

I know the answers to those questions, and so does the us legal system. I'm curious what Sony thinks of them.

Edit: In case it wasn't clear, I don't think Sony should be enforcing any kind of political ideology if I were to use party voice chat.
Don't be an asshole while chatting with people on a game console is not a political ideology. Or at least it shouldn't be.

Literally lets you weed out the fuckheads that may end up in a party, since you'd be able to report them. I like

It's quite easy. Don't say anything controversial, or a violation of Sony's TOS, or illegal in a voice chat with strangers.

This 'new' warning is to clarify things and put Sony in the legal right. So users can't sue Sony for unauthorized recording after getting banned for what they said on voice chat. Now you have to agree to other users being able to record you and sending your voice data to Sony before chatting.

This was probably all done because of the EU's GDPR making data privacy options opt-in, instead of opt-out, by default. The same law was why Valve set all Steam profiles and user activity to private as default a few years back.

I don't even own a PlayStation and don't have a high opinion of Sony but this scandal is a complete nothing-burger.

Of course, of course. I mean it's not like anyone can ever have malicious intent to frame someone as an "harasser", nope. That never happens. I totally legit trust resetera-esque folk to record everything I might ever say & it'll never be held against me.

Exactly even though this isn’t constant voice recording it’s still a subtle way of policing people’s speech.

As long as you’re not saying anything illegal all should be fair game. What constitutes hate speech is too vague now a days, people are gonna abuse this.

I'd assume the government have always been ensuring the platforms holders record all voice chats on all console platforms for reasons of "national security." Can't have some Incels or Allah Akbar's planning terrorists attacks in Call of Duty.

Talk about willfully misunderstanding the warning lol, they're saying you might get recorded by anyone listening to your voice on their living room~ and you might get reported to Sony if you're a nazi. Big whoop?

The people that need this would never have survived the war of words back in '03 on Xbox live and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. Lost some good men back then.

You pussy ass kids and your Instabook gotta just ruin everything.

Oh shit, Sony defense force is doing damage control. Glad you guys took the time from your busy lives!

Sony encouraging thought policing and snitching can FUCK RIGHT OFF. And indeed it does certainly look like they're opening the door to third parties monitoring chats too.

How is it a defense force to refuse to accept your blatant borderline FUD? There is zero indication they are opening the door the “third parties monitoring” nor can you point to Sony expanding its banning guidelines. It might be a shock to you, but if you report someone’s direct message to you through the chat function on PSN, you have basically “recorded the convo you had with someone” else and sent it to Sony! The horror!

may be recorded and sent to us by other users.

why are people in this thread being so damn obtuse?

It makes no difference who does the recording. Ergo why are so many being obtuse & pretending voice recording by anonymous people = better than Sony doing the recording themselves? It's still equal to the same when you're being reported from wrong speech.

Don't be surprised when people get the heebie-jeebies when facing the prospect of being recorded like that... by anyone.

Removing your privacy was the first agenda after Sony moved headquarters to CA. Now do you see why Japan is abandoning them? Blue-haired communists at Sony CA are very busy undermining the company. This is only the beginning. You all need to move on this shit. Whether it's a user or Sony, who gets to decide your intention?

But how can Sony genuinely enforce party chat behavior when they don't know if a recording that was sent to them was actually recorded in a PSN party chat? And not a recording made somewhere else?

BadBurger

Is 'That Pure Potato'
Other user already could, and did, do just this with cell phones (on consoles, on PC this has always been the case natively).

But the hundred-or-so "me and the boys" series of joke tweets about this gave me a good laugh earlier.

Lmao at the lack of reading comprehension.

It appears to me this is about allowing players to record harassing messages, trolling, etc and report them to Sony if needed.

I dont think it actively records you on it's own, that's your phones job.

It's good that they made it easier to quickly forward toxic gamers to Sony. Only problem is that you always need to be aware of what other people might find toxic. And eventually what Sony finds toxic. Not that easy in these times.

When I record a gameplay clip on Xbox One I've noticed that it doesn't record the voice chat. Does the PS4 record the voice chat during gameplay recordings?

Fucking sad that they have to clarify what is perfectly clear already.

It does not specify who made such recording and it does not say if the user is aware of sending such a thing, it could be smuggled as part of a user report.

Sony better make sure no conversation recording is enabled where illegal.

Lets be clear,

At no point will be specifically notified when your being recorded.

No consent is required at the time.

The recording is being done by Sony on behalf of the user, then sent to sony.

Any attempt to rationalise this as different from Sony recording chats without your notice is false.

The recording is done by Sony, without your direct consent or knowledge.. and is provided to Sony... without your consent or knowledge.
