Apple TV, Disney+, Spotify, Netflix, Twitch, Youtube at launch
Prime, Hulu, Peacock, myCanal and more...

Within the Media space, you’ll no longer need to download entertainment apps through PS Store — it’s all in the Media space. Creating dedicated Game and Media spaces for the PS5 user experience will make it fast and easy to switch between gaming and entertainment content whenever you want. The PS5 console also features a new Control Center that makes controlling your music easier than ever before, so you can quickly switch between channels, skip, and pause your music

we’re pleased to announce some of the entertainment apps* scheduled to hit the PS5 console on day one, with more apps to come in the future.

Apple TV

  • Enjoy Apple TV+, Apple TV channels, new and popular movies, and personalized, curated recommendations on the Apple TV app. That means users can enjoy Apple Originals like Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, Ted Lasso, and The Morning Show through Apple TV+, subscribe to premium channels, and buy or rent movies and TV shows and access past purchases from Apple. The Apple TV app will also be available on PS4.
Disney+

  • The dedicated home for movies, shows, shorts, and originals from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. From original series like The Mandalorian, to fan favorites like The Simpsons, you can watch your favorite stories right from your PS5 console.
Netflix

  • Catch up on top entertainment hits such as Stranger Things, The Haunting of Bly Manor and more. With thousands of TV episodes and movies in Netflix’s library, there’s plenty to choose from.
Spotify

  • Listen while you play. Just as with PS4, users can play their favorite songs as background music in-game with Spotify. You can choose from more than 60 million songs while you’re battling bosses or roaming through an open-world adventure.
Twitch

  • With a deeply integrated Twitch experience on PS5, you can now watch or livestream your favorite gameplay and chat live about the best moments with fellow gamers throughout the many diverse and dynamic communities.
YouTube

  • Also integrated with PS5, you can broadcast and share your epic gameplay moments directly to your YouTube channel, or sit back and watch new and trending content shared from around the world.
Additional streaming apps* coming to PS5 include Amazon Prime Video, MyCanal, Hulu, Peacock, and more.

Looks like it will be a good experience and I'm glad they recognize these boxes can be used for so much more than just games. With how ubiquitous streaming is now a game console really is all you need in a room.

Curious how "deeply" integrated Twitch is. It worked pretty well on the PS4 though the video quality wasn't the greatest, I would assume the bitrate is going to be way higher now.

IS it "TV, TV, TV, TV, TV" pitch ?

Good that PS5 doesn't launch empty-handed (though it's less important that last generation as most of the TVs already have these services).

It's interesting to me that Sony is letting "competing" subscription services turn up - competing in the sense they'll be showing content Sony also sells through their storefront.

I know they had this stuff before but Disney+? Apple TV? Later for Hulu, Prime and so on.

Seems like Sony are happily giving up the media content to competitors if people want them.

I wonder if we'll see Luna or Apple Arcade too?

Disney+ is on PS4 but the app is shockingly shit in terms of performance and stability. I, like most people will just use TV Apps I guess or an android box. Spotify while gaming is nice.

Did a CTRL F for "plex"..... nothing. Maybe its in the "and more"

Where is the Plex app. I think that is a big deal. Plex has been one of my favorite experiences. And having the lifetime subscription is worth it. Now if I could just get invited to some of those super secret Plex libraries out there.

I used the PS4 pro for all my media apps until I got the X900H earlier this month. The android interface is INSTANT and switching between apps on the fly takes place in a second. The PRO interface just became a slow god damn mess. I'll probably just stick with my TV.

I'm waiting for mine - can you install non approved apps on the TVs?

Wonder why Apple TV+ hasn’t made the jump to consoles yet, seems like I’m always missing an app on any one streaming box at a time. (No hbo on my roku still)

they also get a cut if you sub through the apps which I’m will be a lot of users so it makes sense.

Most useless things to me on a console as current tv's have that and I would use those via TV instead of wasting money on a PS remote.

What kind of TV's do you guys own? Cause on my OLED the apps suck. I prefer using the consoles as a single box.

Anyways no Hulu at launch is mildly disappointing but happy to have youtube day 1, i recall a prolonged wait on PS4

Kind of pointless in the Smart TV age, but I guess it's an option.
My smart tv is a old Smart TV (no Android), only have Netflix and is extremely slow with apps. So is not pointless. People forget out of NeoGAF, people have yet FullHD from 2010-2014

In the recent months I used the TV apps in PS4 than the games, mostly Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Video.

I think that it's great news to see all these apps day one in PS5 and preinstalled, and also to move them to a separate 'Media' tab.

I'm surprised Prime won't be at launch (unless I'm reading it wrong). Otherwise all seems par for the course.
You're reading it wrong. Amazon Prime Video is listed too as one of these "some of the entertainment apps* scheduled to hit the PS5 console on day one, with more apps to come in the future", even if they didn't include it in the list of a few ones highlighted with a description. They said there:
"Additional streaming apps* coming to PS5 include Amazon Prime Video, MyCanal, Hulu, Peacock, and more. "

Disney+ is on PS4 but the app is shockingly shit in terms of performance and stability. I, like most people will just use TV Apps I guess or an android box. Spotify while gaming is nice.
Now PS5 will have extra RAM and wifi6, let's hope this helps it run better even in the case they don't improve the app.

IS it "TV, TV, TV, TV, TV" pitch ?
No, it isn't an E3 conference. It's just a blog post that doesn't even have a video to tell that all the key TV & music apps will be there day one.

Sony already had plenty of tv/movie/video services with content that Sony also sells or rents on their own store. It's just another one with a small market share. As long as they get their revenue share of the money spent on that app in their platform, they're ok with it. I'm pretty sure Sony gets more money from Netflix than from Sony's PS4 movie store. And PS is something very secondary for Sony movies and series because they are sold/rented/streamed on a gazillion places.

It has nothing to do Luna or Apple Arcade, which like Stadia, GeForce Now or GamePass or xCloud won't be available on PS5. Movies are something secondary for PS, but games are the main market and PS Plus and PS Now (specially PS Plus) are key for them so won't allow any competition there. In any case, for these services wouldn't make sense to give a 30% of their revenue to Sony because they already have to get that %.

Apple likes to keep things Apple and likely felt they have enough devices out in the world.
Their TV service is probably failing (it's a tough market and most do) so they have to expand to other devices or DIE!

with the app on Amazon and roku boxes was wondering what took it so long to get on consoles. Apple app jumping to roku iswhat got me to switch to roku from AppleTV box (have a huge iTunes movie Library).

Doesn't everyone have smart TV by this point? Is it necessary to still have consoles do all this as well?

Smart TV also have disadvantages:
  • Very often the cheaper devices have slow CPUs so using the apps makes no fun
  • apps have to be developed for each plattform, so if you buy from a smaller TV brand maybe smaller apps are not available
  • for the devs it is difficult to support all TVs and all manufacturing years, because incompatibities and changes between years
  • very often support for apps stopps after a few years
