First look at Mark Wahlberg as Victor "Goddamn" Sullivan

I think this movie will reveal very quickly that Uncharted never had a good story, or good characters.

If it's shot on location in some exotic locations and has good action, I'll watch it.

Serious question: Why is Hollywood more obsessed with youth than game devs are?

Its really weird if you think about it.

Only teenagers go to theaters now. They like Tom Holland. Marky Mark, despite not being a huge critical success (Departed was amazing), brings people to theaters to see transformers. Tom Holland also already has ties to Sony properties which will just make his future Spider Man appearances more bankable if this succeeds. Sony is probably the most cynical movie studio in existence in terms of profits, and they often have the most extreme product placement too. Watch some of the critical review of the new Ghostbusters and you'll see what I mean.

I bet they don’t even use the theme tune, which is one of the best in gaming, and much better than a majority of modern film themes.

Probably because they don’t understand the character well enough to just write him in as an already established character. Honestly, can’t say for sure. That Tom Holland was already in a Realm Reborn commercial. My guess is they need to get as many people onboard with this in order to recover all the money they spent.

I spent a good amount of time and money on the Uncharted series and I don’t care if I see this film or not. Did all those times I spent buying these games at launch pay for this movie to be made? I guess I don’t have a place to trash this. It could be good. It just isn’t really hitting me yet.

Terrible.
Way worse than Holland.

A movie with a different cast than the games, with actors that are quite different from the characters in the games, telling some original "young Drake" story that wasn't in the games is going to prove the games had bad plot and characters?

I'm guessing it's a combination of wanting to have young-ish actors to be able to milk this for a long time if its successful.

And, more importantly, that since it's a videogame movie they'll push hard for the teen and young adult audience and they think younger actors and characters will be more relatable for them.

Bingo. Hollywood executives still think video games are just played by children and teenagers, even in 2020.

This should just be modern Indiana Jones - an action adventure film for a wide audience. Instead it’s going to be pitched at teenage boys, and will be as moronic, loud and badly written as the Transformers movies.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Sully always reminded me (not in looks) of Dean Stockwell in Quantum Leap, especially the story's of women he would tell while puffing on a cigar

"Corporate" dudes with nothing but business degrees are undiscerning idiots. They only know buzzwords are are only capable of the most superficial reasoning imaginable. They'll cast anyone they think is popular and think they can just cover it up with makeup, costume design and CG. Most of them can't even tell the difference because they think of this kind of stuff as just nerd shit.

Yeah, the franchising angle is the only thing that makes any sort of sense, because as a whole... /facepalm.

Its a very odd trend to observe though especially if you're a fan of movies from all eras. Go back as comparatively recently as the 80's and well, just look at Raiders for example. That's a movie with a cast of adults! I don't believe for a second that a movie as good as that with a star as "hot" as Harrison Ford was back in '81 wouldn't be a smash hit, even if the lead was pushing 40!

Women are 58% of theater attendees, and casting Tom Holland is definitely to appeal to them. The trick is to cast for women, but not entirely alienate men.

That's just so wrong. It's funny, I kinda like Wahlberg ever since I saw The Big Hit, but he was not fitting to be a Max Payne and he is not fitting to be Sully.

Don't insult the Max Payne franchise by calling that shit movie and this shithead by that name.

? You think Holland is more appealing to women than say... Chris Evans or Ryan Reynolds... or any one of a number of older, better suited male actors? I don’t see Holland appealing to the male audience, either. Not in an Indiana Jones type role like this one.

I honestly think Sony only greenlit this as a vehicle for Holland, because they don’t get Uncharted’s actual appeal - which is, again, modern Indy.

Yep. Younger women are obsessed with him. He's not cast to appeal to men. Most actors aren't. Just look at Thor in the comics versus the movie. Hemsworth treads that line perfectly though, and is 100% for women, but doesn't alienate men.

Hemsworth would have been an excellent bit of casting for Nate, to be honest.

As far as men are concerned, they would definitely have liked a (perceived) fully grown adult male playing Nate. Drake is the kind of character men want to identify with - completely impossible when played by such a youthful looking boy. They've shot themselves in the foot with this one. It's going to tank. And its such a shame, because Uncharted stories are a piece of piss to recreate, but the casting has to be spot on for it to work. Half of the game's popularity is how damn good Nolan North is, married with the character design.

Unlike Holland, Walhberg has proven over his career that he’s a great actor, he goes for low hanging fruit movies lately, because he can or he’s lazy.

This is a strategy that Disney uses in Marvel movies, putting real actors around awful/weak leads.

Yep, anyone that can steal scenes from Alec Baldwin, DiCaprio and more is really good when given a movie that plays to his strengths (Uncharted wont).
