That is all good and well but if people can't buy it that isn't gonna translate to sales? You wanna talk about records? The switch has destroyed anyone this year with Animal crossing... Let's not conflate hype with actual sales numbers... I bet you think playstation games sold more than Nintendo ones this gen... Haha. It's gonna be a super close race this gen. Don't get scared.
According to Nintendo and Sony financial reports as of June 30 the amount of games sold for each Sony and Nintendo consoles are:
PS4 1396M
Switch 407M
PS4 sold over 3x times the amount of games than Switch.
Until that same day, the amount of consoles sold are:
PS4 112.3M
Switch 61.4M
PS4 sold almost twice the amount of consoles than Switch.
And launch aligned, fiscal year after fiscal year PS4 has been the best selling home console ever (on their 1st fiscal year, 2nd fiscal year etc always was over PS2 and PS1, the top selling home consoles ever) and performed better than Switch on each fiscal year.
If Nintendo achieves its 19M estimation for their current fiscal year it will be under PS4. And seeing Nintendo limiting the sales of many games to March 31st seems they aren't very confident to achieve their estimations for this fiscal year, maybe it's a marketing trick to push their numbers for this fiscal year to see if they achieve their estimations.
All consoles got an unusual sales spike this year during the lockdown, not only Switch. Yes, releases like AC or TLOU2 did help, but the unusual spike was related to the lockdown because not only the other consoles noticed it on hardware and software sales, but also the gaming services, video streaming services, internet usage and even porn websites.
Regarding how are they going to translate to sales, all shipped consoles are sold in days. And in this case, at least for preorders seems that even if they are manufacturing at record levels for a launch period the demand is way higher to the supply, so it's pretty likely that for the first few months PS5 is going to be supply constrained with the console sold out everywhere until Sony is able to increase their production (which already is on gaming history records level for its point of console lifetime).
PS4 had better launch numbers than Switch, and PS5 numbers will be even higher.
