PS5 unboxing embargos lift on the 27th, "other stuff" on the 6th, launch games in between

Imagine breaking records by just revealing a logo which we all knew what it'll look like and still break records, getting 9 million on a tear down video in 2 weeks, getting 11 million in 1 week on the UI yet people still think your marketing is bad? Crazy right? In comparison the Xbox reveal trailer is on 15 million and haven't gotten anything as high since. Just because you don't like their marketing doesn't mean it's bad, it's a slow and constant release of information which keeps them in the headlines and on people's tongues.

Everything is NDA'd these days.

I'm not sure why people are saying Sony is in the dark ages or do they have something to hide by staggering. Everyone is doing it.

I said as much with the XSX videos that were dropped over the last couple of weeks from 'creators'.

And it is a pile of shit. Precisely for what you say. No one can give honest opinions now.

You give someone access to pre-release content and in exchange you sign an agreement. You're handed a list of what you should highlight and talk about and crucially what you should avoid talking about.

It is just advertising made to look like someone's own opinion.
Mainly this, if you want an honest opinion you have to wait after the product is shipped, you need a review not a paid preview that in reality is just disguised advertisement.
If you get free shit you can't talk bad, easy as that, otherwise no more free shit next round.

They also broke records on twitter and FB for gaming related posts. More importantly the reveal trailers for games like GT, Demon Souls, Miles Morales etc are all doing insane numbers. For example using only the PS youtube channel, since the PS showcase

Demon Souls - 4.4 million
Godfall - 5.5 million views
Miles Morales 24.2 million views

On one channel. That's not counting the 10's of millions of views from reactions vids, or the other channels that have uploaded the same trailers or garnering 10's of millions of likes, and even more hype comments.

Every measurable metric on every social media platform shows that Sony has played their hand with a different level of precision. Personally, I want and need more info asap. But the numbers on every platform speak for themselves and do so emphatically.

To what, though?
you for real, do you need to be spoon fed?

example: resolution, load times etc of current gen games compared to the series x... would suck to boast/hype all this super ultra fast new SSD only to show it being slower than the other guy.

disclaimer! tuck in your strings, I'm not shitting on anyone's toy. it very well could be completely the opposite! just weird to hush everyone right up till launch.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the embargo on the new games for Ps5. The ones that are important to them. They obviously wouldn’t be concerned about negative comparisons for those.

I’m not sure Sony care about last gen games as you might think they do.

What's with the weird narrative that Sony is trying to hide something every time forum nerds demands aren't met?

PlayStation has been on top for so long, fans who have dug in on the otherside no matter what have them under a huge microscope to call out ANYTHING negative thry can find. When they can't, they fall back to "what are they hiding?" and "they're cocky".

Hope DF get one soon so we can see how hot it runs and how loud it gets along with the power usage.

There's a very good reason to put an NDA on the hardware and software you're giving out for tests. YouTubers are rarely professionals. A lot of them would just go live on Twitch the moment they have plugged the system in the mains, instead of taking their time to test it. Obviously the first to do it would get a lot of views but the quality of presentation would most probably suffer. A few days to prepare reviews helps resolve that.

I tested hardware and software for reviews so I'm speaking from experience.

That's way too late. I don't understand why Sony is doing this. It makes no sense whatsoever.

I honestly don't see the issue. They are just pulling the console out of the box which will be the first officially approved unboxings that we get if these consoles. It really isn't they big of a deal.

You mean like hiding cross generation versions of games for 6 months? No reason to hide anything that is not third party at this point. Let the information flow. Fuck I miss house and his crew. Open honest and transparent

Mmm. Was hoping to see their BC to get some actual like for like comparisons with the XSX. If only to shut some folk up...

Hopefully there's an accidental leak. Im so hungry.

How easy is it to get connected with PlayStation brand rep who will give you an entire console weeks early? I’m seeing content creators with 40 views average on their videos and barely any following on socials get PS5s.

This makes no sense... They haven't even begun to shoot their load.
late 2021/early 2022? That is when their next first party title launches. We already know we are getting enhanced BC and Game Pass. No matter how many coats of paint they put on that narrative it is information we already know. I am excited about the Series X for that reason but I'm not going to pretend MS is sitting on some nuclear announcement just before launch. Craig ain't walking through that door Nov 10th.

It's stupid to do it this late period.

U know creating good looking content takes time and if there was no embargo these sites would try to rush to push out a video as quick as possible to get the clicks (leading to lower quality video)and many things wouldn't get the shine it needs.

Its called marketing .
Yeah exactly. Allowing ASAP incentivizes really shiity quick as fuck videos in order for someone to be "first." This puts everyone on the same playing field, and forces them to actually make a good video to stand out.

Plus it minimizes the amount of "PS5 is broken wow huge scam!!!!" videos because they plugged the HDMI cable into the wrong input and didn't get a signal.

Also it's literally just how all tech NDAs work, it evens the playing field and lets everyone collect and put together the content they want by the embargo date rather than these quick hackey videos. Every phone does it, every tablet does it, all big tech product review cycles do this. Suddenly it's a conspiracy when Sony does it. The other camp isn't fully freed of NDAs yet either.

Sony's marketing feels incredibly calculated to me, if nothing else that says they are extremely confident.

Which in all fairness is probably deserved. They've had a very good year for software sales and mindshare, whereas despite MS' gains/acquisitions its all stuff "coming later". Basically, they are in as strong a position as they are likely to ever be, so they are trying to squeeze as much juice from it as they can.

Is it possible that review embargos are lifting before the 6th?

Demon's Souls, Spiderman:MM, Destruction All Stars etc...?

Seems direct opposite to me... PS4 marketing was super on point. This.. I dunno what this is. It's a drip feed of things that aren't coming till next year at earliest... I mean we have seen more ratchet than demon's souls and even Spiderman. Feels like they are gonna be decent games but apart from souls nothing is pushing the system. Nor is the case on Xbox Series consoles... Both launches seem to be rushed and effected by covid19 to varying degrees. But MS got consoles into hands quicker than Sony did. But its obviously planers between both. Consoles wars are fan manufacturered not business decisions. Well not any more. #segadoeswhatnintendont

It’s a good strategy to keep hype up long term and make sure the PS5 releases at peak hype level. Also makes sure that each game gets good coverage and that content creators have plenty of time to make good videos and articles. Some of these games like Godfall have a small marketing budget so Sony doing it like this gives them the best marketing push they can have.
Like the individual stated that you replied to, all that marketing is kinda moot when it's sold out and a lot of people can not get their hands on the console.

The launch management is far worse in my opinion then the ps4 launch. All of this in the face of them saying they would have doubled the amount ready. With the pandemic unemployment and budget restraints I'm sure demand isn't as high as it should be an normal economy.

I say the opposite they are so scared of a mistake they over think everything. With the ps4 house and crew were confident as fuck they let information fly free and transparent. Started with showing in February and demo. Those guys were great they got me on board day 1 even with zero good games because I knew they would come and I believed in thier vision.

PS5 marketing numbers are setting records of YouTube views and Instagram likes for all gaming companies on gaming history. Series X|S numbers are way under them.

Spiderman Miles Morales announcement trailer has over 16M views, which is more than any video on Xbox/Microsoft Game Studios accounts (in all their history, not only Series X|S related) with the 'Minecraft Village & Pillage Update Launch Trailer' as only exception.

Sony said PS5 shipments for the first fiscal year (Nov-March) are going to be higher than the PS4 ones, which means PS5 will have the best sales on its launch window than any other console in gaming history. And even considering that, preorders are sold out worldwide in minutes.

Regarding the launch games, remember both consoles will have FIFA, CoD, AC, Watchdogs, Cyberpunk or DMC to name a few at launch, and that PS5 also has Demon's Souls, Spiderman Miles Morales, Godfall, Sackboy or Destruction AllStars. As these historical records show (the huge amount of important exclusives for 2021 also helps, obviously), it isn't a 'weak' or 'rushed' launch by any means.

That is all good and well but if people can't buy it that isn't gonna translate to sales? You wanna talk about records? The switch has destroyed anyone this year with Animal crossing... Let's not conflate hype with actual sales numbers... I bet you think playstation games sold more than Nintendo ones this gen... Haha. It's gonna be a super close race this gen. Don't get scared.

According to Nintendo and Sony financial reports as of June 30 the amount of games sold for each Sony and Nintendo consoles are:
PS4 1396M
Switch 407M
PS4 sold over 3x times the amount of games than Switch.

Until that same day, the amount of consoles sold are:
PS4 112.3M
Switch 61.4M
PS4 sold almost twice the amount of consoles than Switch.

And launch aligned, fiscal year after fiscal year PS4 has been the best selling home console ever (on their 1st fiscal year, 2nd fiscal year etc always was over PS2 and PS1, the top selling home consoles ever) and performed better than Switch on each fiscal year.

If Nintendo achieves its 19M estimation for their current fiscal year it will be under PS4. And seeing Nintendo limiting the sales of many games to March 31st seems they aren't very confident to achieve their estimations for this fiscal year, maybe it's a marketing trick to push their numbers for this fiscal year to see if they achieve their estimations.

All consoles got an unusual sales spike this year during the lockdown, not only Switch. Yes, releases like AC or TLOU2 did help, but the unusual spike was related to the lockdown because not only the other consoles noticed it on hardware and software sales, but also the gaming services, video streaming services, internet usage and even porn websites.

Regarding how are they going to translate to sales, all shipped consoles are sold in days. And in this case, at least for preorders seems that even if they are manufacturing at record levels for a launch period the demand is way higher to the supply, so it's pretty likely that for the first few months PS5 is going to be supply constrained with the console sold out everywhere until Sony is able to increase their production (which already is on gaming history records level for its point of console lifetime).

PS4 had better launch numbers than Switch, and PS5 numbers will be even higher.
