this is a good opportunity to be sold on games like MM, Valhalla and Sackboy. Already locked in on Godfall, DeSo, CP and CoD so will be avoiding that content like the plague.

According to Nintendo and Sony financial reports as of June 30 the amount of games sold for each Sony and Nintendo consoles are:
PS4 1396M
Switch 407M
PS4 sold over 3x times the amount of games than Switch.

Until that same day, the amount of consoles sold are:
PS4 112.3M
Switch 61.4M
PS4 sold almost twice the amount of consoles than Switch.

And launch aligned, fiscal year after fiscal year PS4 has been the best selling console ever (on their 1st fiscal year, 2nd fiscal year etc). If Nintendo achieves its 19M estimation for their current fiscal year it will be under PS4.

All consoles got an unusual sales spike this year during the lockdown, not only Switch. Yes, releases like AC or TLOU2 did help, but the unusual spike was related to the lockdown because not only the other consoles noticed it on hardware and software sales, but also the gaming services, video streaming services, internet usage and even porn websites.

The switch hasnt been out for an entire console generation. Leave out mate. I'm talking bout current state of affairs. Show me a game that sold 20m in 4 months on the ps4.

Only shows how homogenous the Switch market is. 5 games that sell 4 mil is better than one that sells 20.

Sony have very strange approach to marketing, one that is outdated and archaic in the age of social media. I think their marketing has been pretty poor leading up to PS5 launch.

Hmm. A teardown vid has 9M views and just a look at their ui has 11.5M views. They sold out of preorders twice within in hour, even though they reportedly have more available at launch than the PS4. I think they're going to be fine.

yea hype is through the roof. It’s 2020. Everyone has access to the internet. Lockdowns got people bored and interested in vidya who normally wouldn’t be. This has to be the most hyped up console release ever.

i love your avatar by the way. Will sasso as steven seagal was hilarious

WoW. I really can't wait to get my hands on them. Unfortunately I need to wait until November 19th to get my hands on.

PS4 sold both more consoles and more games than Switch aligning sales during mostly the whole life cycle we have to compare. Not only looking at total numbers.

PS4 has dozens of games more than Switch that sell over 10 or 5 million copies. PS4 gets several of these games every year. This is why in PS4 the best selling games on the monthly or yearly rankings are recent games (with GTAV as super weird exception) and in Switch many of them are games from previous years. In Switch sales get focused on a few million sellers released across all its lifetime, because Switch has less recent big selling games.

If we look at bigget sellers, since November with Polemon it mostly just got Animal Crossing and now the Mario compilation. Every year PS4 gets FIFA, Assassin's Creed, a few other Ubi/EA/Acti/Take 2 games and at least 2 or 3 Sony big sellers plus some indie hit as this year happened with Fall Guys. And this isn't considering other publishers that get a big selling game every several years as this year will happen with Cyberpunk.

I mean, there are more PS4 games sold than for Switch aligning launches, but they are spread between more big selling games because PS4 has way more big selling games.

And if Switch hits exactly the sales estimation Nintendo has for the current year that ends March 31st 2021, it will be behind PS4 aligning launch fiscal years. Instead of selling the 19M Nintendo estimates they will sell this year, they should sell over 23.3M to outsell PS4 aligning fiscal year releases as can be seen in the graph of my previous post. Unless sales go way beyond Nintendo predictions, at the end of its 5th fiscal year Switch will be behind PS4, as it was at the end of its 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st.

It isn't something about current state of affairs, it always has been this way. Animal Crossing is one of these rare Switch games that sell a lot, that in addition to the reasons expained it got benefited of the harware and software sales experienced during the lockdown because was released just before it.

We also should remember PS4 had the best launch ever, which means PS5 will have the best launch ever.

Yes, it did the same. As an example, people who got the new Xboxes also were embargoed to show Series X instead of Series S, to talk about BC certain days, and about specific games each days, etc.

When companies send free consoles (or any other hardware) or games to the media and influencers they have embargos and NDAs mentioning what they can mention and what can't mention, and when. They do that to make sure they take enough time to review and write properly the needed stuff instead of rushing to publish a rushed stuff just to be the first and get extra clicks, knowing everyone will publish the related unboxing/review/article about X at the same time.

This also helps the console makers to schedule and track better their marketing and PR campaign, and make sure they don't talk about stuff that maybe it still is half done and will be completed or fixed later.

Doubt it... but that's the point, we have that unboxing already.

But that wasn't approved by Xbox though.

I'm seeing people complaining about the NDA on the unboxing but the truth is Microsoft hasn't allowed an official unboxing yet so both can be blamed for that.

Officially Sony is allowing an unboxing of their retail console before Microsoft. But that really doesn't mean anything to be honest.

Nope. Sony are being morons again.

How the fuck are they not letting people review a the only NEXT GEN ONLY GAME??!!!

Sony lovessss to hold back their big guns.

i guess their logic is that demons souls is obviously going to the #1 software seller off the rip, so they’re going to let the “influencers” (god I hate that term) jerk off sackboy for now

I don't think it'll sell more than Miles. I think it comes down to mass appeal. Miles is more hype inducing for the general audience.

If we are considering PS4 sales, then yes Miles morales outsells most out of the launch lineup

Even without that, including ps5 only, it'll outsell demon's souls by far. It's the flagship. Sony hasn't marketed demon's souls at all
Doesn’t really need marketing. A lot of people are buying PS5 for Demons Souls. It’s the only major selling point right now IMO. All the Other software can be played on PS4

Not at all. Spider-Man Miles Morales is clearly going to be #1 seller between the PS5 launch exclusives. The Miles Morales trailer is one of the most viewed videos on the PlayStation YouTube channel. But I agree that they may save Demon's Souls and Godfall for later but because they may be the most impressive tech-wise on 4K HDR tvs because they are the only next gen only AAA exclusive ones.

So maybe they give them first Sackboy, Destruction AllStars and Morales plus BC (and maybe some multi crossgen game) for the first contact and save Demon's Souls and Godfall for a 2nd batch.

How the fuck are they not letting people review a the only NEXT GEN ONLY GAME??!!!

Godfall, Destruction AllStars, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition or Astro's Playroom can't be played on PS4, they are next gen only.

Doesn't change the fact that their model is outdated and they could be doing better than the numbers you posted.

iJustine’s sister, so probably her. Big YouTuber.

In general, glad that they’re doing a full rollout to all this gaming and tech personalities. It’s a different age, no thanks to how insufferable and bad gaming journalism has become. Sending a PS5 to IGN doesn’t really guarantee you’ll reach the people where they are anymore, but all the trendy YouTubers? Like or dislike that, it will result in a huge impact.
I had to google who this was. Damn you zoomies.

She's 31 and Justine is 36. Not only firmly Millennial, but elder millennial and touching X for Justine. But the dude I posted in the OP has sub 4K subs, they're really sending these out to a lot of quite small channels.

She was one of the first real youtubers in like 08 before the zoomers could talk

Yeah I feel like most of her audience grew up with her years ago. There may be zoomers watching but as one of the first few waves of techtubers her audience probably averages closer to her age, mid twenties to thirties.

Vtubers...That's what makes me feel old.

It's been the best marketing I've seen leading up to a launch, when you consider a world-wide pandemic shut down all the gaming shows this year.

whats the point in the staggered NDAs if your console is basically sold out??...are they trying to hide something or is this just some weird torture for people that didnt get a pre-order

A lot of the launch titles dont have final patches yet I would assume. So showing them in the best light possible seems to be what they are going for. on top of other features that may not be ready like TV apps for people to test HDR within Apple+, Netflix, etc.

So many marketing experts on GAF.
Sony does this wrong, Sony does that too late

In many countries preorders are sold out and millions of people are watching new official videos on YouTube.

Do they satisfy every customer's wish ? Hell no !
Do they run a very good marketing campaign ? Yup !

just for it to be in the conversation is incredible. It’s a perfect storm situation to me.
- It started the souls-style series but wasn’t played by as many like DS since it was an exclusive and not as hyped yet.
-A lot of the 360 people went over to PS4 and will now get a PS5 so this is their first chance to play it.
-It wasn’t the best performing game and now it looks to have corrected that.
-It was remade to take advantage of new graphics and load time tech.

Add in the 11 years time gap to make it feel just fresh enough and being a launch title for 14 million consoles and it’s hitting all the right notes to be a monster seller. If the attach rate is anywhere from 10-20% you’re looking at 1.5 to 3 million copies.
I can’t see a scenario where at least 1 in 10 people who preordered a PS5 are not buying this game

Early adopters are not an indication of ANY console success. Pretty much every console sell at launch and with covid19 stuff is even more insane. So yes it is still early to call them successful yet.

But most of the things people are demanding like disassembly or clearer backward compatibility info are interesting only to enthusiasts who are early adopters.
Of course the marketing will change after the release.
