Phil Spencer refers to a $500 console + $70 For Games as a "Heavy Investment" for casual gamers

Considering the fact Phil is bringing to market a $500 console and allowing third party to charge $70 for games I found this quote interesting.

"You know, gaming can be an expensive hobby. I see certain platforms going to, in the US pricing, $70 for games. The consoles are $500 in US pricing," he said. "I think that's a heavy investment for people who aren't every day playing videogames ... the more casual player or a family that's balancing many things."

Looking at how consoles and PC parts sell, I think the companies can squeeze some more money from the people :messenger_tears_of_joy:

What do you mean allow? Third-party is a third party. They can even sell for 100$. It is their right. For the first party, Phil provides GamePass.

Is he not also selling a console for $500? Are some of the games on that console not also $70?

He acts like the console(s) and games have static pricing.

Good news, they don't.

Casuals jump in later in the generation when Activision and EA stop porting to the last gen consoles and/or when the player base of whatever multiplayer game they play every day dies.

Why is he always trying to rewrite the rulebook?

The quote isn't very interesting at all.

What is interesting is your sizzling hot take that Phil Spencer should somehow dictate the prices of other people's products.

After buying a 3080 and preorder of the XSX it’s probably the first time I realized how expensive this hobby is. I’m also one of those whales that spend thousands of dollars in microtransactions.

I wish I got into a cheaper hobby when I was a kid. 🤣

A seller has to promote the stuff he wants to sell.
In this case Gamepass.
Too bad that he's selling a 500$ console as well, the price of games is not static and GamePass is not the same as owning the games.

If you have the money then a 500$ console and a 70$ game (that you can own and replay as many times as you want) is nothing.

If you don't have the money or don't want to give that much on day 1 you can always wait for a year and buy a 500$ console and a few year old games for 30$.

Problem solved.

And in any case lets not be hypocrites and pretend that everyone in this or the previous gens buyed all their games on day 1 and at full price shall we? ;)

He says for CASUAL gamers.

Anyone who claims $570 USD for a console + 1 game is not a big investment are blessed and I hope you continue to have success in the foreseeable future.
Casual gamers usually aren't early adopters though, so why would they even be effected by the launch price of the new consoles? They would be buying in after a price drop, especially considering the scarcity of the PS5 and XSX.

No, but casual gamers are the biggest market. Do you revolve your strategy around waiting for casual gamers to buy your console + subscribe to gamepass in 1-2 years after release? or do you try to sell as many consoles + subscriptions as fast as you can?

Are ALL games coming out for xbox series whatever on gamepass day 1? That’s pretty sweet if true.

He is bringing up Series S when he makes this comment.

MS is targeting more casual gamers who might want something new for cheaper.. news at 11.

Well I think the state isn't wrong per se, but saying this doesn't really favor XBOX or Gamepass. Didn't read the whole article, maybe he also said something like gamepass plan cost 25 bucks each month rather than paying upfront 600+ dollars, which imo is more convincing to their potential casual customers.

Haven’t all consoles cost roughly this?

So Xbox SX cost less than $500 and gamepass costs peanuts?
I dont get the point of the comment when his company is releasing a console at that price.....

He rather no1 owns games with gamepass, pay $100 a year and pay $500 for a console lol
He’s so passive aggressive, its getting worse and worse.

It is a big investiment yes, specially for people like me that live in Brazil. Still I do prefer the PS5 and maded my pre order. Nothing against the Xbox but it just not for me, if I really want to play some of those games I have a gaming PC.

Conversely paying $300 for a console that still does 1080p is a waste of money.

Personally I agree to a degree. But we are the hard-core. 11 year old kids with a fucking 32" TV in their bedroom will be A-Ok playing Fortnite and 2K with their friends on this.

He's not wrong. At the same time, casual gamers are also not typically the ones that buy a console right at launch.
