Ps5 won’t support ssd expansion at launch

There is no SSD to buy... so I believe it is better to lock it until we have options.

I believe only the WD one is compatible but it is a non-existente item to buy anyway.

was there anything out yet to buy anyways?
We don’t know if you have to have a certain kind I believe

“What’s the holdup? As Cerny explained, not all M.2 SSDs are fast enough to keep up with the PS5, thin enough to fit into the SSD bay, or compatible with Sony’s I/O controller — and Sony promised to do compatibility testing late this year to make sure.

“PLEASE HOLD OFF ON GETTING THAT M.2 DRIVE UNTIL YOU HEAR FROM US”
At the very least, Cerny suggested, off-the-shelf SSDs would need to deliver more than 5.5GB/sec of bandwidth over a PCIe Gen4 connection, and not have a giant heatsink so large that they won’t fit into the PS5’s drive bay.”

We have known this for months? Cerny said it in his talk a while ago.
Some people did not know this.

Well yeah, cerny said that back in march. Hopefully by spring next year they'll have it out and they'll be cheaper

Odd on the face of it, but thinking about it there's bound to be many folk who aren't aware of the needs of the drive that go out and fritter away their money on something that won't work.

Wasn't the lack of channels on expansion SSDs compared to the PS5s 5.5GB the reasons for needing a 7-9GB/s SSD to be equal? Or am I misremembering?

Sony step 3 - now tell a week before launch that how you cannot upgrade from 660GB usable drive space until sometime next year.

Sometime next year could be January, so that just 2 months to wait. Also, Cerny clearly said they will tell people WHEN they will be able to buy compatible SSD for expansion since April.

Sony step 1 - thanks for pre ordering the console

Sony step 2 - show a teardown. show how clumsy it is to install an ssd.

Whats clumsy about it? That fact you have to take off a pannel? MS's may be easier, but I prefer the standard slot Sony is using, will eventually give us many more options than the proprietary stick from MS.

I can understand it tbh. While drives like the Samsung 980 and Sabrent 4+ should work Sony officially committing to it been compatible under every PS5 game circumstance is no dount a large and intensive process (especially considering these drives dont have the priority lanes).

Better safe than sorry before giving paying customers the nod, especially given the pricey nature of the drives.

wasn't people already saying the price of the SSD expansion because they were out?

Yup, people were dreaming up more shit, the sony fanbois are really good at finding nuggets of information and piecing it into the thing that PS5 SUPPORTS and they're 100% confident of it(the people grabbing random Sony 3D sound tech that's in phones and trying to claim that it's what 3D Audio "is"), when in reality they've got a snowman made of shit... a shitman.

Sony is probably running intense tests on a few SSDs to make sure they don't make the machines die in an awful fire, or more realistically negatively impact the thermal performance.

Don't be shocked if PS5 CERTIFIED drives are the pricier ones, I'm not saying that because they've certified them, I'm saying that Sony isn't taking any risk on jank brands in their machines.

I think M2 is advanced enough that Sony will be possibly able to REJECT a non-certified drive if it's stuck in the M2 slot and have it not work at all.

TL;DR: If you want an SSD to expand the space HOLD YOUR FUCKING HORSES ALREADY FFS, it's coming, but it will take time.

Yes i think that's a worry.
Only WD advertised their new black ssd as PS5 compatible. But no one really knows.

The worst outcome is even the latest Samsung and WD pcie4 ssd have problems operating 100% in PS5. Emulating 12 channels to 8 channels and whatever hardware features of the internal ssd. Always seems like a risky bet on future uncertain outcomes

says $350 there
Scratch that $229 is the MSRP but its been sold out for about a month now. Even the WD 850 which is just as fast has the same $229 MSRP and sold out also.

also same as on xbox it needs to be a consistent 5.5gbps transfer speed even when the buffer is full (xbox series ssd are 2.5gbps consistent) a lot of ssd drives seem like they will work like the new samsung evo drives but once there buffer is filled up the drive slows down hard so it won't work. if most drives just barely work for series consoles throughput then i can imagine sony's spec willl take a good 6 months further for those drives to be met

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.

swear these drives won't work cause once their buffer is filled up they transfer super slow... aka once you pass the 50gb buffer the transfer at 1 to 2 gbps? so say you install cod it will chug along till the cache was emptied and with sony system recording background etc etc... dunno seen reviews on it hence why they saying wait for them to verify... but don't spread these drives as these are the ones.

SONY NEEDS CONSISTANT 5.5GBPS RAW SPEED. Not one time

Weird the Manufacturer is over priced on there own item.

looks like one I listed is a different drive with some other config. Gonna be crazy trying to find the right stuff for PS5 for dam sure.

They could have at least allowed it for cold storage. Like a d drive or something. Games/apps can only launch from the ssd built into the console but you could still have an aux drive to store stuff.

But I suppose you can have a separate usb drive for that.

Look at their press release they have the actual MSRP on there too so something is up somewhere.

Using off-the-shelf SSD expansion will be better in the long run, but I can see why Microsoft went with a custom one — at least it’s available at launch. Trade offs in an imperfect world.

I wonder if we'll ever see nVME storage end up in a future Series X revision, xbox360 started with proprietary HDD enclosure and even PS2 style memory cards then eventually ended up using standard sata harddrives and usb pen drives/hdd's.

That is not how storage and game data streaming works.

Right benchmark

For now all those who said series x 1tb expansion it was too expensive or a bad form factor can stick a proverbial sock in it.
Sony needs to fix this, there is a fair number of hardcore gamers out there with cash that want to expand thier storage at launch. (I'm not one of them though)

I’m really shocked how many question’s were answered clearly and thoroughly in the road to PS5 that months later people are still surprised pikachu about.
