Ps5 won’t support ssd expansion at launch

Cerny said not to expect a compatibility list until 2021 but didn't specify what that really meant.

I still want to know what their plans are for that. My wife for some reason refuses to delete games from her consoles even if she never plays them lol

I suspect the 7GB/second PCI 4.0 drives out now aren't going to be enough.

Cerny did say wait after launch for a list of compatible drives so what's the problem?
The main problem is that very few people are going to dig up a talk Cerny did months ago and dig through it to find the statement. Not everyone hangs around message boards all day fighting over GPU features.

PS5 storage expansion is complex and messy for most people right now. I just hope the info becomes mainstream before people go spend money on drives that won't work.

Right but where’s the data on transfer once the buffer has been filled. The ars technica review states the transfer speed. This is something else.
Sequential read is what matters. Games stream data sequentially. Nobody is copying 50GB of data, they are copying a series of smaller files sequentially.

All this info was already part of the road to PS5, like a lot of other info. Why people act if they need to install everything at launch. For most part, you will have your original PS4 games stored on your external SSD/HDD. There is enough space lol.

funny how those xbots acting “shocked”.

So have they confirmed if you can move ps5 games from external to internal or vice versa???......because if this is also coming in a future update most people’s HD’s are gonna be full within 4 weeks with the first and third party stuff coming out......how can people say this isn’t an issue?

Even if they put one out that was silly money at launch. They would have an option, you would be a bit of an idiot to buy it. But it would be an option.

Because people in general realize... sit down for this one, buckle in too... you don't need TONS OF GAMES installed SIMUTANEOUSLY. Only the ones you USE need to be INSTALLED.

People are going to have to go back to deleting shit they're not constantly using, and not being in some bizarre fucking rage to CONSUME every fucking product that gets shit out.

Of course you can.. why would they need to confirm this?

There is no SSD to buy... so I believe it is better to lock it until we have options.

I believe only the WD one is compatible but it is a non-existente item to buy anyway.
Is full of ssd in shops...So..the off the shelf? I thought you could buy the ssd that you desire for the price that fit for you...

Unsurprising. Once PS5-compatible large SSD's are available, I expect them to be pricey as well. It's going to be a dance of installing and uninstalling games and parts of games for a while.

this was always the concern with sony's choice of bespoke internal ssd yet they want to support off the shelf ssd.

Agreed they should have gone with a proprietary solution. That's totally not a more, oh shall we say, anti-consumer choice.

I could not find stock of either the 980 Pro or the WD in stores.
Yeap you can when the 3rd-party SSD manufacturer start to put 7GB/s SSD on the market.

I mean you are trying to buy something that doesn't exists (or exists in very little stock) in the market yet...

It’s not a ton of games....you could potentially go over the internal drive storage within the first 4 weeks of launch with just 6 and that’s not counting the games that’s people are currently playing like watchdogs and dirt...will they need the internal as well?

some people it won’t just be 1 single user on the console....other users may want to play other games

It would be pretty shit if there was no option to move things around in case you hit that cap

Western Digital already has. But you can't install it until Sony puts out the system update that enables external SSD storage.

So stuck at 600 odd GB, I mean the 1tb expansion makes no sense financially on Series S but at least you have an option, well done Sony💩

I can survive with the storage we already have for the time being. It’ll be down to the essentials this go round.

You can buy the 500GB WD Black drive right now. It's the 1TB and 2TB that aren't available to ship yet.

You can get it from WD. Don't know why you keep linking Newegg when you can get it directly from the manufacturer.

There are already drives that max out the PCIE bandwidth, if those don't make it already then what will change next or the following years? I think sooner or later Sony will just have to offer their proprietary drive as an expansion and call it a day, instead of messing around with the consumers.

7gb/s saturate the 4x pcie4 lanes though, so there’s no way it’s not enough. I think corny said something around 6.5gb/s should do

They will ship for Nov 20... maybe you get it early depending of the delivery service.

Sony step 1 - thanks for pre ordering the console

Sony step 2 - show a teardown. show how clumsy it is to install an ssd.

Sony step 3 - now tell a week before launch that how you cannot upgrade from 660GB usable drive space until sometime next year.
Shh you’re gonna trigger SonyGAF

The 500GB SN850 is available and in Stock in Germany, at select retailers, the same for the 1TB 850Pro. 3-5 days delivery.

There is no reason for locking the expansion bay.

Bc games + something like CoD, not sure I am expecting full XSX storage in few hours just to downloading updates and shit like that.
Cod is tops 110gb and the biggest game (AFAIK) at the moment.

And I don't know who would buy a next gen console to fill it with old games on day 1, whole ignoring the new games?

The 'concern' over SSD space is the same bollox marketing that was used to transition from physical to digital.

"ohh I can't be arsed changing games all the time (a non issue), let's go to digital"

"ohh I can't be arsed downloading games and I don't have much space (a non issue) let's move to streaming"

Don't fall for it.

No they haven’t....the ps4 games playing from external is clear but copying ps5 games to external and back when you need them has not been confirmed
I didn't say it was confirmed.. I'm just suggesting it's obviously something you should be able to do. Why would they not have such a basic feature?

I mean, we can agree that XSS has a low amount of storage right? And some people like me, kind of cleaning up backlog and chooses from the installed games, so I guess I am weird in a way, that I would like to have something like 4TB SSD expansion right now for my XSX and same way for the PS5, when I am going to pick it up (not on launch), people are weird sometimes you know : )

HECK NO!!!!
Open Market > Proprietary

By this time Next year and especially by holiday 2022 M.S. proprietary ssd will look like and total complete rip off.
Remember those $100 20GB HDD for the 360, yup, were talking order of magnitude levels of Rip off as the generation continues.

??? Weren't there a couple PC SSDs that claimed they are PS5 compliant?
Only one.

WD NB850 that launches in a few days.

Based on its specs we believe the Samsung 980 Pro and another one that I don't remember the model now will probably be compatible.
