I really hope this is more Origins than Odyssey. Odyssey wasn't a bad game, but I just didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Origins.

Origins was much better as well imo. Given you can use shields and you couldn't in Odyssey I'm hoping the combat is more of that style. But I watched some raid play yesterday and the long axes didn't really give me much hope tbh - lots of whiffing

Agreed. I was not a huge fan of the combat changes in Odyssey, especially the bow changes. It was cool that you could get all these cool super moves and shit I guess, but they straight up got rid of the quick bows and the shields and I loved having both of those.

I'm not a huge fan of what I've seen so far from Valhalla, but I think the setting and environment look stunning and I'm willing to give it a chance for sure.

Combat looks boring... I'm still hyped but mostly for the scenery and exploration and mythology. Fighting with dual two handed axes looks so fucking stupid.

Only AC I played is Black Flag and I didn't like it. But I'm very tempted to give the franchise another go. I love the setting and everything I've seen about it looks great. Seems to provide lots of content for your money.

I’ve never felt so indifferent about a game before

I have no idea whether I’m going to pick it up and if I do, when

Thanks for doing the OT! I'm super excited for this game mostly because I absolutely adore the setting and have enjoyed the previous two AC games. Probably my most anticipated game of the year, to be honest.

I still haven't pre-ordered, though. Hoping that Green Man Gaming will get keys in and have a deal for launch day.

I want to play a viking game, but not an assassin game. Do we know how big of a role the dumb Templars vs. Assassin's and Abstergo play in this title?

Black Flag was the best in the series.

Got a feeling this is going to do very well reviews wise. I expect lots of 8's and 9's. A few streamers i have watched have been gushing over it (none sponsored streams), one of them that said he didnt even realy like Origins and Odyssey.
Well it was my most wanted next gen game, and nothing i have seen since has made me think otherwsie. Odyssey is my fave game of this gen, and this looks even better from what i have seen.

Oh and over the numerous streams and Youtube vids i have watched, still not see any 'present day' stuff. Hopefully they finally dropped it.

You're gold mate, the threads you put up are crucial to the texture of this board.

I'm not too hot on AC these days. I loved Origins, but I just am not sure the assassin archetype fits into ancient Greece or, the UK. I'm sure this game will be a fantastic action RPG, but I am really not sold on how they're going to shoehorn that damn hood, that secret order kinda sorta feeling, into this setting without it feeling extremely out of place and forced.

If they can resolve this issue, I'm sure this'll be a top, top game. But them's my feels.

the first game was such a fresh take on things at launch. It had issues but it was cool and you knew immediately it was a game of the year candidate and the start of a franchise. Then they started to add more of everything and stealth started disappearing but it was there and you had ezio. Then 3 came out...uh oh.then it started having a new release every year, or it felt that way. Then pirates? And now, you’re left with this game. A stealth assassin game featuring in your face Viking pillagers. I think I saw that in the next game in the series you ride around with a tank and use a cannon.

There‘s still a WWII game coming, so...

At what point in the franchise is it considered new AC? There are a lot of titles in this series. Has Ubi reinvented the formula since Black Flag?
I've seen people say Unity (patched) perfected the formula from 2. Origins and Odyssey make it open world with skill mechanics ala Witcher 3/Far Cry.

Origins.
They added color loot and lvl loot. Inc enemies. Kinda like diablo..

that’s why even bothered trying another AC game.

hahah..you know what? That actually makes way more sense than a Viking game. Something like Saboteur. That was a good game.

After reading the comic based in WWII i am conviced it would be possible to tell a great AC story within that setting but just not as a traditional 3rd person action adventure rpg, but more kind of an xcom game or something like commandos. Xcom would be an ubi franchise anyway and doing something like they did with mario rabbids i think would make for a great niche entry and allowing to circumvent the obvious narrative difficulties in regards to WWII, especially in todays day and age.

I would go back to the roots gameplay and combat-wise and use a city like Paris and have the assassin be a sleeper or someone in hiding like Shosanna from inglourious basterds.

well "back to the roots" would mean more cities plus the in between countryside, since it wasn´t until the third iteration of the game that there was one big city map. So that would indeed basically mean it would be a "behind enemy lines" type of game. I think what prevents it mostly from happening in that "classic" 3rd person formula is the already existing Lore around WWII being "staged" by templars with the help of pieces of eden and at some point the thing just went out of control.
I would assume this is a (not the only, but i don´t want to spoil things) reason why the Comic took a "different" approach with telling a Story within that time period in an area not at front stage of the War but an "underground" science lab in a mountain somewhere in norway, where a story about assassins and templars was possible to be told without dragging leading figures into the mix. And there are a couple scenarios (africa, scandinavia like in the comic, the middle east, yugoslavia, some less known parts of the asian/pacific theatre, etc.) in the time between 39 and 45, where a similar story with a more strategic oriented gameplay could work very well. Maybe even with a local (local and online) coop component if put enough time and care into it.

God damn this looks awful. The stuttering, no weight behind hits, terrible AI. It's like the battle director said "let's make it like Dark Souls, but awful".

This is a bummer because I love the setting.

Don't they have like a 3-game life cycle. In the sense that for Origins laid the foundation for Odyssey and Valhalla and Origins being the one that introduced most new mechanics.

The AC after Valhalla will probably refresh the franchise again.

Wow 5 areas!. I know the majority of the game is in England, but the opening in Norway is multiple hours itself.
You have to love Ubisoft, i know many hate them, but boy do they give you 'bang for your buck' with their games.

Also thanks for posting these. I have this ocd thing with AC where i have to explore the map, getting all the sync points, before really doing anything else lol. This will help a lot with that!.

The developers switch every game, this game is being built by the team who made origins.

Anyone else disappointed that there is no more equipment loot? It was fun to find legendary gear :/
Hopefully its not a new thing going forward. The loot was one of the best things about Origins and Odyssey.
I wonder if it was a time problem, involving covid, and not being able to make hundreds of assets for different armours etc. Or it could be just that Vikings kind all worse similar style of clothing, and not bronze and gold armours etc.

Did they state in some interview that you can go back to Norway anytime you want`?
