Is there any sense in buying a 1080p tv in this day and age?

Firstly something you should know about me: I don't like the idea of future proofing. I buy what I need at the time, and it's always worked out better for me than trying to anticipate where I'll be in 5 years. Plus if I can't save up $2k in 5 years for a new TV, then something has gone seriously wrong in my life and I should not be planning for such a scenario. I've tried to future proof PC's before and it's a waste of time. Buy for what you need today, fuck tomorrow.

Anyway here's my thinking:
  • I'm pretty close to transitioning fully to PC + Switch, so the TV will only be used for the Switch. I've sold my XB and my PS4 is going to be gone soon as well. I have no immediate plans to buy any next gen consoles other than Switch Pro.
  • Switch Pro might be 4k but let's be real - it'll struggle to render in 4k most of the time, even with render scaling tech.
  • All my content is 1080p. I have a vast media collection which I still regularly watch.
  • My internet is crap so streaming in 4k won't be an option any time soon.
  • Even if I were to buy a XBSX / PS5, if there was a 1080p / 120fps performance option, I would opt for this every day of the week. I love me dem frames.

My main reason for wanting to upgrade is my TV is an old LCD panel and it gets HOT during summer. I want LED so I don't have a heater in the middle of my living room.

I guess the real question is: what are TV upscalers like these days? Are my 480p Simpsons episodes going to look like ass on 4k?

Why not use the TV for the PC too?

1080p TVs are pretty much the same price as 4K TVs these days. Just get the 4K. If you can hold off for a bit longer I would as VRR/120fps tvs will start coming down in price soon.

If you can find a top gamma plasma, in motion (so 99.9% of the time) it would look much better than any TV on the market, no matter the price.
Blacks were also as deep as OLED in the latest Panasonic and you'd never have to worry about resolutions because 1080p would be 1:1 and downsampled images would simply blow your mind.

As I said minutes ago in the other Thread, when both my KURO and VT50 will die, years from now hopefully, i'll just try to find another one.

4k china brand TVs are like $150... hisense is a current favorite of bargain shoppers. you should probably do a little research instead assuming so many strange things

Plasma was such a good technology.

Buy a cheap 4k HDTV on Black Friday. The idea of future proofing is a bit overated because at 4k itself it has different kind of TVs for future proofing.

Na I like sitting close to a smaller screen for PC gaming. Just feels better. I've tried living room PC gaming before and it blows. The Switch is for the living room, PC for the office.
Noone is talking about "the living room", just replace your monitor with a tv.

How is upscaling on good modern tvs?

I'm like OP, where most of what i own and stream is 1080p at best. I don't buy any of those black label BDs, because they cost more and my current TVs are 1080 or less. I still have a giantass 36" Panasonic CRT for retro gaming.

However, i know that most electronic goods today are usually made of garbage, so I've had multiple LCDs fail on me within 5 years. So I'm wondering if i should buy a 4k TV instead of hunting for an older 1080p model.
My sister bought a 4k TV about two years ago and viewing almost everything looked like NTSC 480 shit on HDTVs in the 00s. Pixels, errors, and colors are glaringly bad. So it's put me off from even planning on upgrading to 4k.

Has technology improved yet or should i wait for some magical tech to fix up low res shit? I've seen some new tech where magic pixels (or something like that) are created when upscaling the picture, but i read that it can look weird and ugly during fast scenes.

Basically all TVs of a decent size are 4K now anyway.

The more interesting debate to me is “LED vs OLED” since I think the former is good enough for most people and a better value still. In a couple years maybe not so much as OLED prices continue to fall.

So dump my existing 18 month old, high end 144hz 1ms monitor? What problem would I be trying to fix here? I'm really confused. I mean it's still in perfect condition, should I break it or something? I don't get the point you're making. This thread is about my living room TV, I don't know how it affects my gaming PC.

A good TV will do wonders for your collection of 1080p movies and tv series. The thing is that you'll only find lo-lo budget 1080p TVs. If you want quality, you;ll have no choice but to buy a 4K HDTV. I have no doubts at all that you'll be able to find excellent deals for excellent OLED 4K tvs on Black Friday below or around $1000.

(And just forget about buying a 1080p TV. Just don't.)

If you are serious you may included CRT to the convo.

I still have my Pioneer Kuro KRP500 plasma fullHD to play some retrostuff. Though, resolution-wise there isn't any reason to NOT want 4K. This is because 720P and 1080p both fit into the 4K resolution 100% through multiplier, therefor, scaling is much better across the board compared to a 1080p TV.

Very good point about the multipliers. Ok this has convinced me.

Go 1080p absolutely.

1080p content upscaled to 4k looks blurry.

Unless you plan on getting ps5/seriesx. Then it will be 50-50.

This is complete nonsense. 4K has exactly 4 times the resolution of 1080p. The upscaling will be perfect. In fact, 1080p content will look exactly the same on 1080p and 4K TVs that have the exact same size. The blurriness you're thinking is when you're watching 1080p content on a much larger TV than you're used to. But that would also happen when you switch from a 32" to a 60" 1080p HDTV.
