Smart Delivery System isn’t just a marketing buzz word

So I’ve been on ps5 for the last 5 days and there’s something which hasn’t bothered me much. But seeing giant bomb folks or king thrash talk about a certain thing, find a particular issue to be bad and extremely inconvenient. So what is this issue? Well if you get a cross gen version of the game, there’s too much player input needed and lack of automated systems to help you play the best version on ps5. It defaults to the PS4 version. If you don’t check the game version, chances are you’ve been playing the PS4 version. Why is the PS4 even mentioned in the ps5 condole for a cross gen version?

Meanwhile on Xbox, apparently the console thanks to smart delivery system, automatically gets you the best version. No player inputs needed. You don’t play a Xbox one version on a series x console. Smart delivery isn’t just a marketing buzz word now. Why is the ps5 not having this level of automation and convenience?

Again this isn’t an issue for me at all, but I can clearly see why this is so problematic for many who’ve bought cross gen bundles or versions

Not sure if new in last firmware, but there is something different for upgradable disc games.

E.g Sticking in PS4 version of Mortal Kombat 11, the game does not auto install. You need to acknowledge “copy”. This gives you opportunity to select the PS5 upgrade option from the right instead.

But indeed, things aren’t clear. The system needs to lead the user through the process. A simple popup asking what version you want would suffice. And in the future when a PS5 version materialises, the popup should kick in so you are aware of the new upgrade option.

Being able to have 2 different versions of a game installed is kinda geek cred cool in its own right.

There's no magic wizardry involved in having an application check what system version you're currently on and downloading/launching the appropriate title. 'Smart Delivery' is in fact a marketing buzzword for some basic ass quality of life work that Sony just didn't finish before the launch date most likely - no surprise really since they couldn't even manage to finish a working Rest Mode. Sony has been pulling this shit for years, like the fact that they still haven't implemented automated cloud save syncing for multiple consoles. They're always adding modern functionality but with Nintendo-level quality of life features wrapped around it.

The real question is whether SpinDoctor Phil knew ahead of time that Sony wouldn't manage to implement it properly and got his marketing team to make up their own fancy sounding buzzword to capitalize on Sony's lack of what should just be considered the most basic of requirements for a digital content focused backwards compatible system.

I guess it's technically true for COD. If you bought the cross-gen bundle digitally, every now and then the system just decides to make the PS4 version the active tile on the home screen. So you have to notice that, press start, go to game version, and tell it you want the PS5 version to start and not for the PS4 version to start downloading.

I guess some people were confused and installed both versions because of this, thinking they had to have 300GB+ on their SSD.
