if there is anything that grown-ups should be sacrificing for, it is the younger generation, and to risk a fever and a cough to keep some continuity in our young peoples' lives seems a no-brainer to me. But you know, we are faced with a situation where the average age of COVID deaths is the same as the average age of all deaths, and when you get into this world where people aged 78 are dying of a contagious disease, then the young people just have to pay the price. Especially when you have study after study showing that the disease isn't of any risk to these young people, and the schools aren't a major source of transmission. The children just have to sacrifice their education and mental health, so 85 year olds can live 3 more months.

Yep. That the sacrifice is going in the other direction all this time is absolutely grotesque. People should be ashamed of themselves. By and large you're shithousing an entire generation of children/teens/etc, the consequences of which are not really known right now... for the benefit of mainly extending the lives of some elderly people for a few months (or a few years best case). We don't know yet how many life-years we're ruining and I feel strongly that the damage is going to be extremely bad.
The responses I got to these types of statements in the spring were mainly, "well, okay, but it's just until we beat this thing. A few more weeks. Maybe a couple months".
...and here we are eight fucking months later with no real end in sight any time soon.

You'll definitely have it, assuming you never had it before. But assuming both of you are healthy (including not obese), you'll both be fine as well. My brother and his wife tested positive a little over a week ago. 4 or 5 days of pretty significant fatigue followed by a steady recovery. Also had some issues with taste/smell. Slight dry cough. That what it is for the vast majority of people. Its pretty bad. Its going to push the limits of the healthcare systems for a while. Where we really really fucked up was the lockdowns in the spring/summer. That was idiotic. The 2 weeks was fair because we didn't know what was coming. But the virus wasn't really very widespread then. Had we not done ridiculously long lockdowns last summer when they were not necessary in most places, people and the economy would be in a much better place to tolerate lockdowns now.
As it stands, we cannot lockdown fully again for a variety of reasons. I'm not sure if will be necessary most places, but things are definitely escalating. It just depends how much worse it gets before it peaks.

This is the first time in history where we are given a daily running total of one very specific cause of death.
They would never do it with suicide or starvation. They do it with war to some extent but not daily announcements. Malaria. Cancer. AIDs/HIV. Car accidents. Heart disease. Nope. It's not that nobody cares but nobody ever cared enough that it would be leading news EVERY single night for 9 damn months.
