Manly vegetarian food thread..

Since I want to cut down on my meat consumption a bit, but REALLY like salty meaty tastes, what are my options?
I can cook a very good pasta with tomato sauce. With lots of garlic and onions.

Other than that, I feel that meat is missing in each meal I cook otherwise.

So, veggie GAF, give me some pointers.

How do you feel about Tofu or Seitan? I use them instead of meat but I've experienced real meat eaters deteste it just because "fuck that shit, I ain't no motherfucking soy boy".
I have cooked soy "filets" before. Cooked them in hot water with some broth, and then fried them with some butter and garlic in a pan. Tasted like some interesting kind of meat I haven't been eating before.

Will definitely look into that again, thanks for the idea...

Monty’s in Los Angeles has an impossible burger that rivals some of the best meat burgers I’ve ever had

They’re vegan too. The cheese is fantastic for being vegan and they have great vegan milkshakes.

Ah, I used to make great burgers out of black beans and some other stuff a few years ago.
Also a great tip, thanks mate..

Also, I don't mind eating real cheese.
Just want to eat less meat, since I eat it like every fucking meal at the moment.

Smoked paprika will give you that preserved meat flavor like cold cuts, hot dogs etc. Smoked stuff in general causes cancer, but from what I've read it's negligible in paprika and the thing that gives it its vivid red color is an antioxidant.

You can also use Beyond Meat which tastes pretty good. It has a similar composition to beef but it does not form TMAO so it's much healthier in that regard. All isolated proteins increase IGF-1 though so they should be limited somewhat.

I ate Chili sin Carne while visiting a co-worker and his wife. They used sunflower mince (Sonnenblumenhack) instead of minced meat. Was really good. The texture was really similar. You could use it for everything else where you normaly would use minced meat.

Water chestnuts have a crunchy texture, they’re good to add to dishes.

In general, legumes are a good base for cooking. I recommend getting a good Indian cook book. Vegetarian lasagna can honestly be pretty good.

If you want a simple dish, here’s one I quite like that is super easy to make:

I like making lentil burger/patties.
Cook them a bit softer than usual with garlic, onions and tomato sauce (or whatever you like). Let them rest an cool a bit, then I mash them, add eggs and flour (can also add some bread crumbs if you want them a bit crunchier), chilli powder and whatever extra seasoning you like. And then you just form them and make them like regular patties
Don't have my own pictures but it looks like this:

It's not like "OMG totally like a real burger" or anything. But it's still pretty nice.

Jackfruit is a suitable meat alternative.

I wanted to try it out because it’s a popular meat alternative and vegans eat it often, rave about it so I assumed it had the same amount of protein as like seitan or whatever. Looked at the nutrition facts, the entire fucking package was like 1g...

If I ever meet the CEO of that jackfruit company, he’s going through a table

I did a similar change in diet about 10 years ago, cutting out red meat and pork*. I still do eat a lot of chicken and frequently have a can of solid white tuna, but haven't had a burger or steak in years. Once you make it over the psychological hump you'll be good. It got a lot easier for me when I stopped trying to replace meat with non-meat (tofu or bean burgers vs real burgers, for example). But Teezzy is right, eggs are your friend and there are so many options out there, you can have eggs every day and not have the same meal twice. Peppers, onions, spices, etc will add a lot of flavor once your palette is cleansed of all the processed tastes. Moving to a veggie-based diet will be rough at first, but once you're on board with the lifestyle change it gets easier. Also helps to drink lots of water every day.

*My general rule is if I wouldn't kill it, clean it, and cook it myself I don't deserve to eat it.

Dude, I don't want to get rid of meat. : D
It's just that my current diet is steak, bacon, poultry, chicken, pork or beef with every meal I cook. I also cook potatoes, rice, various veggies and pasta with it. I cook almost every day for over 30 years now, and I think I cook quite well.

I want to mix up my diet a bit, and have a few veggie only meals inbetween apart from my go to Spaghetti with Tomato sauce.

That's all.
Anyway, thanks for your recommendations.

Don’t be afraid of the meat alternatives you can find in frozen and Produce dept. they are mostly processed veggies, and some of them are pretty tasty (but expensive, try ALDI for some cheap pre made plant based meat alternative). Jack fruit is great. You can find the actual whole fruit at Publix in FL and make it yourself. But the prepacked stuff has a good, unique flavor... it’s bacially just the fruit in sauce, so it’s real simple and natural. It’s like a sweeter bbq flavor.

tofu is just processed soy beans, and it’s really good for you, but it has zero flavor. I usually Cooke it up with some soy sauce and get it a little charred. Still comes out a bit bland but 🤷‍♂️ ALDI has pretty cheap tofu

eggs are amazing. Eat a lot of them if you want to cut down in neat but not lose protein intake . Scrambled, boiled (I do a hard boiled 12 pk every week to just eat one whenever I feel like)

I try to avoid overly processed food wherever possible though.
That stuff is not good for you.

Look up how they are made, some of them I avoid for sure, but others are just processed veggies, grains, nuts and oils. The word processed is demonized, and we should be cautious if we have no idea what “processed” means, but check out this video on how some plant based stuff is made. It’s pretty simple.

I too may one day look into cutting out all meat but I worry I may become insufferable and mention I’m vegan all the time.

I don't think vegetarians and vegan get along. Well at least one is not persistently and annoyingly trying to tell you that he/she is a vegan and how much a better person they think they are just because of that info.

I would eat babaganoush with some fresh baked naan or pita topped with some butter and garlic every day if I could. 🍆 Friday will have a whole new meaning when you find a good recipe.

Also cans of chickpeas if you don’t feel like cooking them never hurt anyone. Drain them but save a little water, pour them in a pan with some spices and herbs (fresh preferred but I will go for a shaker no problem) and fry them till warm and serve with some rice.

To add to the chickpeas a container of GOOD tahini will cost you about 10-12 bucks but if you like hummus combine that with dollar cans of chickpeas, dab of olive oil, garlic and salt and you’ve got hummus. That and pita will always be a quick meal for me when I don’t feel like cooking dinner and will be infinitely healthier than any garbage at McDonald’s for the same price

Oatmeal is a REAL meal if you get into it, it’s a grain like rice so treat it as such Nuts, yogurt’s, fruits, sunny side eggs, chopped and fried peppers and onions, maybe a scoop of your favorite protein powder, spinach. The options are endless once you get over the idea it’s oatmeal.

Did you not read the title? There is nothing less manly than anything with soy in it.

Anywho, it depends on what the definition of manly is. Many women actually find it a big turn-off when a man is a vegetarian/consumes lots of soy. If it's you wanting your proteins, sure you can get it through those sources, but soy still turns into estrogen. Protein shakes, beans, lentils, legumes, hemp seeds. There are various sources you can get your protein in.
