Video Game Magazines

Demo discs were awesome! Gave you some sort of idea what you could be getting when buying a game full price...now you barely get ANY demos

PSM was probably my favorite, but I also had a fondness for Tips and Tricks as a kid.

I remember this issue. I loved T&T. This and EGM were the only two video-game magazines at my local grocery store. I miss old magazines, there was an excitement to checking one out every month.

The content in those magazines was the best you could get at the time, so I was happy to have it. But my love of them probably isn’t about the magazines themselves, rather I miss those innocent days where I had the time to devour a 300 page issue or holiday gift guide and daydream about all those games. What I really miss is my youth that I associate with those mags.

I loved growing up with Nintendo Power and PC Gamer. I still have all my Nintendo Power collection, they sit in boxes and I browse them every now and again. I like this one persons twitter who shows of his collection of NP art.

I liked when there was a NP archive on the internet but Nintendo I believe shut that down.
It’s relatively easy to find PDFs of lots of old vidya mags, thankfully.
I love RETRO gamer. Too bad where I live I have nowhere to buy them.
you can get them digitally which works just fine IMO, and is pretty reasonably priced.

Oh wow, I didnt know they do digital as well...and $12 for a whole year?? Yes please. I am more of a paper touching guy, but cant pass this deal up especially considering I have no way of getting it elsewhere.

Yup thast the one. I love it cuz its a fat mother fucker...I mean you have so much content in there. And theres always these behind the scenes or making of, or talking to developers from making the game 30 years ago etc.

Being a video game enthusiast during the print media hey day was awesome. Much preferred getting my news/rumors in that fashion compared to the immediacy of the modern era. Gave you as the reader some time to speculate and imagine. Nintendo Power, EGM and Game Pro were the best in the 90's

Nitty_Grimes

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
And then Driv3rgate happened in the UK, easily the biggest scandal in gaming journalism, who remembers?

Yeah I remember.

There was a great video on YT about it but as always I can’t see the wood for the trees and can’t locate it now.

Not from the US but I was quite an avid reader during the late 90s to 2010 of a German magazine called 'GameStar'. But I dropped reading it (and most other magazines) due to the amount of information you can get on the internet and because the old editors/reporters left and the new people were (and still are) incompetent and annoying as hell.

I still love looking through magazines, but after getting into minimalism it became something I no longer bought. One of my local game stores used to have a bunch of them for like $1-3 and I would buy a couple every once in awhile and enjoy looking through them.

I remember how much Next Gen hyped anything new. Of course that was their market but I recall their Ultra 64 hype was through the roof.

Hi all!

Please take down if not appropriate, but I would like to share with you a passion project I have launched on Kickstarter this week with my friend. It is a gaming journal book called 'Lock-on' and will be a premium quality publication featuring gaming stories, thought-provoking features, outstanding artwork from indie artists and also a massive PS1 retrospective with contributions from Digital Foundry, Ryan Mystic, My Life in Gaming and YouTuber, Adam Koralik who will be talking about his experience playing the Nintendo PlayStation Prototype.

We hope for this to be something that would sit proudly in anyone's gaming collection. We are working with a team of staff who currently work on the Ninty Fresh and Switch Player magazines. As well, the project won’t bring much in financial reward for our core team, but will be a platform for indie artists and writers to express their passions and earn a little bit of money.

Here is a link!

Many thanks for any support you can provide.

While not as good as Gamefan, they had some really in depth previews and reviews. Their coverage of MGS and Mario 64 really stood out to me.

Moving most of my magazines to digital to save on space while donating/selling my collections to groups dedicated to preservation.

Anyone here know of a great, cheap tablet for this?

Whats your budget. I think for old magazines any 1080p tablet should be fine.

I have about 20 nintendo power magazines from the snes days with the cool Zelda and Mario comics in them. I wonder if they’d be worth anything in the future

Yeah it's becoming increasingly difficult to read or even watch videos about about games, now, without some ultra self-absorbed writer injecting their own personal struggles or mental issues into their game previews, reviews or features.

Demo discs were also pretty cool. I do like the Steam game festivals where they showcase a ton of upcoming games with playable demos.

Games journalism before the political woke cancel culture bullshit was indeed a wonderous time.

My favorite reply to someone say "*eyeroll* EVERYTHING is pollical." is to link a random 90s game magazine review, then link a wikipedia article about important political stories of the same year of the review and say "Show me the parallels or shut up."

Yes and no. I miss poster inserts. Pretentious 2 page spread SEGA Game ads. Earthbound scratch and sniff cards. I don’t miss it because NEOGAF exists because FAQs and walk throughs exist and closest thing to this is talking to classmates about games during recess.

I understand why it died and I’m ok with it, but I’ll always hold onto my old issues of Nintendo Power. The Metroid Prime issue was a chonker and probably my favorite issue of any publication. And all the bonus offers for renewing, ugh it was a great time.

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I bought a magazine in 05 which was covering E3, and all the systems. PS3, X360 and the Revolution.

It sticks out in my mind, because on the cover, they had the three systems, but they overlayed the Revolution on top of the others.

It's like they knew Nintendo was gonna win. I dunno why, but it just stuck in my mind..

Even if you arent a PC gamer, find archives of old PC Gamer mags from the 90s. I think the first issue had Transport Tycoon on it. My bro would buy them all the time. Lots of content and nicely written reviews. Unlike console mags, PC ages just had so much more editorial, whereas console mags were just tons of pictures.

The reviews were the best as back then reviewers had no problem giving games bad marks like 10 or 20% out of 100% (when mag reviewers used to have balls). You dont see that often anymore. A really shit buggy game would get a 24%, whereas now it would probably still get a 62%.

Preferably under 200.

Plenty of choices under 200 but it seems 300 will get you a bit more or even 250.

I would look for

Reputable brand
1080p screen
At least 32gb internal memory plus micro SD slot
4gb system ram preferable

EDIT Dr. Claus Dr. Claus - dont be tempted to go with 8 inch to save money. Needs to be at least 10 inch. I am a comic reader and its a mistake to go smaller you dont want to be pinching and zooming everytime you want to read an article.

I loved them back in the day and still have a ton.

Top 3 for me were:

Diehard Gamefan- Very "fanboyish" in a good way
Next Generation- The high brow mag
EGM- Great all around

Looking back I was a pretty lucky kid in that I made the move of accompanying my mother to the grocery store on the pretense if I did she'd let me buy a video game magazine, so at least once a week I'd be looking for the Gamepros, EGM's anything with content in the pre-internet days where magazines were literally your only source...

Every so often I go to the magazine aisle..... they still have amazing magazines it's just a hard sell in the digital age
