CYBERPUNK 2077 |OT2| The Last Samurai [>56K Warning_]

~40 hours in, two observations:

1. After seeing Johnny’s reaction I kinda want to drop 225k for Guinevere
2. It’s shocking how much of great plot and character development is locked with side quests. I can’t explain it but I get the feeling these plot lines were much harder to miss in Witcher 3

Little bit of Judy mission spoilers for those who don't want to see.

Is that the picture Judy presumably sends? I never found it anywhere...

Had to take a break from Gaf and other gaming forums because of this game.

I still don't understand how can you go from The Witcher 3 to this, what a disappointment.
I love the Witcher, but ( personal taste aside) I can't see how Cyberpunk is not a better game.
World design is better. Rpg mechanics are more varied, integrated into environment, dialogue and quests, you have far more playstyle options and progression systems, and far more protagonist customization options. Gameplay was pretty solid ( though kind of clunky) in Witcher, but Cyberpunk completely blows it away. And mission design is far more open, varied, with different scenarios and environments in takes place in.
Both have great music: but I think Cyberpunk uses it more intelligently ( tying it to specific situations). Same is with writing and characters: but big advantage here is how First Person really creates more stronger, personal scenes ( the game is loaded with this).

Where CDPR screwed up the most was in marketing and management. Promoting this as GTA-like sandbox simulation ( without really developing systems for it), and releasing it in broken state on consoles. Playing last Deus Ex right now: the world is completely static, most npcs don't even move, they do not react to anything ( only covering in alarm state), they have no AI routines, there is no weather system or even basic day/night cycle. But it did not get any criticism for it, because no one was expecting any of this to have
Similar was with Witcher, with lack of any real crime system or npc daily routines, as it was simply marketed as open world rpg adventure.

Supposedly with mod, Male V can romance her ( there are voiced lines and everything), but they left it out because they didn't want to go against her character.
Anyone tried this?

I got a Ryzen 5800x and 3600mhz RAM, still on a 1080ti, but now I can play this just fine at 1440p. Not a perfect 60 or anything but it's much much smoother and actually playable now compared to my old CPU. Although temperatures and fan noise are crazy high. It's funny how much people obssessed over the noise level of the new consoles, but I could have like 10 PS5s at full load here and my PC fans would drown out all of them!

Agreed. The Witcher 3 has incredible visuals paired with a great story, characters, and setting, but the gameplay was just not very good and rather plain.

Cyberpunk has the visuals, story, characters, and setting, but now actually has really enjoyable gameplay.

Unfortunately, it also has a ton of jank and bugs that need ironing out and the balancing is not great. Hopefully they will get there.

I'm happy that you enjoyed. I'm just extremely disappointed.

I hated the characters, there's not a single one of them that i actually care about, most of the quests were really boring to me, with the exception of 3 (i did complete every single quest in the game, even the filler ones).

There's too many bugs to my liking, why even have a cop system if it's going to be that retarded.

I hated the driving, speaking of driving, the whole race questline is absolutely filled with bugs, cars teleporting everywhere during the race, never seen anything like it.

The city was beautiful to look and the shooting was great, especially playing with HC, snapping from head to head felt amazing, reminded me of playing Mccree or shooting a wingman in Apex. The game has the best in game character models to date, when there's not a graphical bug ruining the immersion during conversations.

The game wasn't bad, but as a CDPR fanboy i was expecting a lot more.

Out of curiosity, what did you hate about characters? To me character/relationship development felt absolutely phenomenal in this game...coupled with how they would setup scenes, the music, the visuals, backdrop, just seeing and experiencing everything in First Person, it just elevates it to whole different level next to any game I've played ( and I always prefer emotional/character driven games like the Witcher, Bioware games, Rockstar, Naughty Dog, etc).
Even with Johnny ( who I really hated at first)
like that incredible scene when you're both standing next to his "grave" at that dump yard, and you really see him break down.
.

The GTA marketing criticism has everything to do with people thinking it would be that. They literally say story driven open world rpg in the trailers. Not once did we see "immuuursive activities" like eating and drinking or mini-games in any of the gameplay or CGI trailers. People saw cars and guns, expected GTA, then threw a hissy fit when they got something else that was never promised or sold as such. People need to start taking some level of personal responsibility for their purchase decisions. I never blamed Guerilla Games for my PS4 purchase of H:ZD because the opening sidequest was RPG 101 fetch quest drivel, the voice acting was wooden and Aloy's voice actor has the range of a barking dog. I chalked it up to shoulda done my homework and $60 misspent because I can't get a fucking refund on Sony's shitty store and moved on.

Management, no doubt. Roast them for crunch and releasing console versions that came in hot. I do enjoy the tears though after decades of worse than CP2077 PC console ports, hello Arkham Knight, Nier: Automata and RDR 2. Let's not pretend like Naughty Dog wasn't running a sweatshop crunch studio either, still haven't released their MP mode :messenger_tears_of_joy: , yet are showered in GOTY awards.

Man, I'd kill for a GTA game to actually have fun shooting and good sounds. Looking forward to Rockstar opus hailed as "next gen" that plays...exactly like every open world game they've released the last 20 years. It is a fun formula though!
Truth is, if you haven't followed the game development and based your purchase decision on ads on the TV you would feel lied to. They advertised it as GTA clone.

Well, kind of ...while they didn't explicitly say this is an open world simulation sandbox, to me the trailers gave that impression, or that they wanted to give that impression to a wider audience.
Like the official gameplay trailer they dropped 2 weeks before release, where the "tone" of the trailer switches to "how you live your life in Night City"
...choose your ride
( giving the impression there will be car shops where you can purchase vehicles..but this is part of that small flashback with Jackie/V)
... scene where Johnny/V carries drinks to a stripper, giving the impression you can visit strip clubs and get lap dances/whatever ( when this was actually a one time scene that's part of the quest)
...scene where V dances with someone at the club ( another part of the flashback scene, and not something that you can do in the game)
...eating/drinking animations ( scripted, part of specific quests)
...showing car races ( when they are part of one questline)
And similar.
Now, to me, these things aren't that big of a deal next to actual mechanics/gameplay/quests. But there absolutely is a huge audience out there who still play Skyrim/GTA for sense of "escapism" and how they can interact with the world outside of main story and missions.
Even unintentional, it seems like a pretty big oversight that they would not put more effort into this, while wanting to tap into that market outside of action rpg genre.

None of those ads show GTA clone though. That's pure conjecture on your part and they're purely CGI with a few first person gameplay snippets. You're making excuses for stupidity and laziness. People still base their purchases solely on TV ads? Everyone has a smartphone these days. Fuck 'em if they can't be bothered to click a few times and search for something.

Aylinn, what are your thoughts on the game, do you like it?

I was initially disappointed by the limitations of the character creation tools, as well as the city population not being as interactive as I had hoped for. Now that I've accepted the game for what it currently is, I'm having a lot of fun!

I'm playing on XBox Series X and love the quick resume on this game...it's unbelievably fast. I hope all the trouble the game has gone through doesn't mean they won't be working on multiplayer anymore. I really want a more social experience in this game's amazingly well-designed city. :)

I'm about 80 hours into the game, and here's my current character. I just need some fancier shoes with better stats and I'll be happy. ♥️

Every promotional video posted in the last 6 months prior to the release on the official Cyberpunk YouTube channel contains some level of bullshit.

Take this one for example

  • Exchangeable parts, perfect for tuning - suggesting that there will be car customization
  • Using high power beasts to run away from NCPD - suggesting that there are police chases in the game
  • We've found room on our roster for some true automotive icons - suggesting that there's more than 1 real-life car

Etc. etc. etc.

see how they are not really saying anything. those are just vague hype words that you think they are suggesting those things but they are not saying there will be car customization. and that is just how marketing works. i mean we see joel and ellie together in tlou2 trailers... most trailers especially cgi and 30 second ads are full of "bullshit". but if you watch gameplay or demos it's not like they showed a different game. it's fine to criticize that. but let's not pretend we don't know how marketing works.

At least you see Joel and Ellie together in game. Plus there are flash-back sequences.

This is just straight bullshit. So yeah, if you were only following the game's marketing and bought the game solely based on that, you could feel lied to.

Pretty big leap in logic to go from choose your ride to there are car shops. I mean, those are all things we've seen in CGI 30 second ads since forever. Thank you for your detailed post!

Yeah, I'll give you that one about tuning. That's some very poorly worded narration.
Automotive icons is actually true because ARCH is a real motorcycle brand and afaik known for quality bikes.
Police chases not in the game? Now, I'm not saying this is well made or anything but...

I watched that "police chase" video. Dude, are you serious?

ARCH is a real brand but the bikes in the game are fictional and made for the game.

It really shows what makes the system so awful.

Cops always insta-spawn behind you. You're only valid response is to drive away very fast. It's just bad and boring.

This is nothing compared to CDPR lies.

You can make a pretty good argument that they did that to avoid spoiling the story and to shock players. I certainly don't see malicious intentions here.

then you are not being fair at all and i don't know why. the marketing was clearly banking on the idea that people loved joel in the first game and showing him stopping ellie and saying "you think i'd let you do this on your own?" meant that tlou2 was another joel and ellie story. people were going to buy the game expecting to see both of them having an adventure together again after watching the trailer and instead what they got is joel being killed in the first 2 hours. that is literally deceiving the audience. i am not saying it's evil. the same way i don't see malicious intentions in what cpdr did. it's just marketing. i'd argue what naughty dog did is even worse.

I don't know, I haven't played TLOU2. Maybe you're right. I couldn't care about TLOU2 less. I don't know why you bring it up. We're talking about Cyberpunk 2077. And their marketing was one of the most misleading I've ever seen.

i bring it up because you are saying that cyberpunk marketing was misleading but marketing is misleading by nature. their only goal is to sell a product. so i am showing to you how the marketing of the game of the year was misleading as hell. i'm using that as an example because that is a critically acclaimed game that came out this year. but i can bring up examples of almost every game. i already brought up a few days ago how ghost of tsushima, hzd and assassins creed marketed their worlds as "living breathing open worlds" and they are as static as cyberpunk or even more.

if you watched the 48 minutes gameplay demo that's the game you played. nothing really misleading about that. just a couple of things that changed. same thing if you watched the actual gameplay trailer where (even though it's still marketing) they actually explain what the game is.
they didn't show v customizing their car. or running away from the ncpd. or interacting with the police/random npcs.
now if we are going to quote a hype trailer/ad because it says "in night city you can be whoever you want" and you think that means you can be a plumber you are not being fair. that is obviously marketing talking.

Wrong. But at least they plastered a big "WORK IN PROGRESS" banner in that trailer. Truth is, the closer to the release we got, the more misleading their marketing become.

well then we disagree on a fundamental level. you think i am wrong and i think you are not really being fair when you say the game is not like the 2018 demo.
i already gave you a great example off the top of my head. i would need to do some research to show you more and i can't right now.

I am fair. It's okay that some concepts and ideas that they presented in that 48 min trailer from 2018 didn't end up in the final product because like I said, they made it clear that it was a work in progress and things were subject to change.

Things like:
  • Mega buildings being a micro system
  • NPCs having life and daily routines
  • Dynamic encounters in an open world based on your actions
  • 3rd person cutscenes
  • Wall running
  • More complex hacking
  • And many, many more
All above is perfectly okay. What's not okay is bullshiting your customers in false advertising few weeks prior to the release.

Just my option. I still love the game.

Stop making excuses for CDPR. The game is still fun and if you are lucky enough to have it on PC probably one of the best looking out there.

But they over promised and cut probably 90% of the systems in the game. Its not derp derp dumb gamers, its CDPR that couldn't deliver. And I blame the gaming press as well that just kept up the hype and lies and didn't call CDPR on their BS until after the game was released.

So when the developer and the gaming press all tell you that the game will be super immersive with all these systems and they don't show up don't blame gamers for being dumb.

The game is still fun, but the content that they eluded to or outright said would be in the game is not there, and the press did nothing to inform us about it until it was too late.

At level 38, I had 3500 armor rating with all legendary armor with slots full of armor mods for more armor, so get cracking! :)

Finished the game tonight, decided to go through all of the endings which took me quite a while. I don’t really feel like getting into details but I will say...

It’s so nice to see a game with actual different endings, how they play out, where they led to, the cut scenes, the different characters, locations and outcomes. It’s great. But they were all fuckin depressing.

Great game. I can’t wait to play through it again when it gets the current gen upgrade and multiplayer, which I’m assuming is moving along since there’s a good list of people in the credits listed to be working on the multiplayer.

OK, finally calling it quits for a while. 95 hours and just finished the third "main" ending with the Nomads. Definitely the best of the three, but all were really fucking cool and unique with surprises I didn't expect.

Too bad I did everything I could and was crazy overpowered for the last missions even on Hard difficulty. Basically one shot everything with my smart assault rifle, so didn't even have to aim.

Still, this was just a fantastic experience. Full of warts, jank, and bugs, sure, but I think I have to call it my game of the year. Need to think on it a bit more, but it was by far the coolest and most interesting game I played in 2020 (and part of 2021). They've got a fantastic base experience here and I can't wait to see what they do with patches and expansions. I'll definitely be back for more.

Sayonara, V and Night City. Thanks for the good times.

I like that the endings aren't all super happy, everyone wins at the end. The world is unforgiving. I also liked that one of the endings gives the player the option to say, "fuck it. I'm tired of this and want to end things." Has this ever happened in a game before? I agree it was excellent seeing and hearing what happens instead of some stills or just text. Those voice messages can be uplifting, hopeful, inspiring, depressing, heartbreaking, or filled with rage depending on your actions. It's that extra touch that makes all those characters feel fleshed out and makes them less AI there to serve the player.

i really like them too. but i have to say that i don't know how are they going to work with dlcs. i expected the game to continue after the ending instead of going back the point of no return. i want the dlcs to happen after the main story and i think they will because otherwise they would need to hire keanu again. so i don't know how are they going to do it but i'm sure they have a plan.
