The GoldenEye 007 XBLA remake has leaked

What looks bad about it?

Artistically the highly realistic textures and baked lighting really don't suit the low poly look of the original and it just isn't done very tastefully in my opinion. Look at the opening rooms in Aztec. What a mess. I hate the gun models and textures too.

Hmmm, i'm at the Facility part (the 2nd level).

Seems inconsistent so far. The first level (Dam) had a lot of geometry improvements on the level itself. Looks slightly more detailed than the N64 version. Facility though, it uses the exact same geometry as the N64, with the high-res textures on top. Might as well be a N64 HD mod. Which is odd. Maybe it's unfinished code?

I need to see the rest of the video...

Another thing that seems disappointing is that it looks like it uses the same audio files as the N64 for music. Grand Kirkhope made higher fidelity music originally and had to compress it for the N64 carts... But he did release a few uncompressed ones on his site years ago. I was hoping this version would use the original files, including all the unreleased ones.

Edit: Statue level looks completely different. Which is good because the original looked awful.

but this game is nothing but a nostalgia ride. It didn't age well at all.
I'd advise anyone, to play any of the Rare shooters (Including Time Splitters) on PC with a mouse & keyboard and 60 FPS. It gives those games another life. Sometimes only small fixes are needed to make an old game fun again.

I ain't saying old games aren't fun. But the map design is very bland and boring.

Title is misleading. It hasn't leaked. Graslu has obtained a partnernet release from someone who had it. The game hasn't "leaked" anywhere as of yet.

What...Modern games are so great that they make old games bad?

This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on GAF.
Let's be real. From a technical aspect even games like cod and battlefield are better, even thoigh they can be seen as mediocre today

Thinking everyone would love that game today is the same type of people who listened to elvis back in the days and says all modern games are shit and everyone would enjoy their old shit because its better than the newer music.

I prefer Eminems old music and from that era compared to the shit today, but taste just changes.

If the 007 n64 game today it would bomb like hell. If wasn't even that great compared to the many fps games on pc that was around the same time back then.

In terms of James Bond. I can’t believe they can’t make anything better than this.
That’s because of nostalgia Goggles. No one ever mention’s Nightfire or Everything or Nothing, both of which are vastly superior and much more playable than Goldeneye. EoN was basically Pierce Brosnans last bond film, the story was amazing! Remake that one with an Uncharted budget and production values.

Is Ocarina of Time dated as well? Would you consider Twilight Pricess or even Breath of the Wild better? The feeling of entering the world, discovering its secrets, and the routine pattern of gameplay make OOT such a good game. The music, the quest, and the layout of Hyrule make it a staple game in the Legend of Zelda franchise. Even if the game is from 1998. Goldeneye did that for shooters on N64 in 1997. The way you move along the hallways, the way your gun flaunted itself at enemies, and the way each objective was marked off. The music, that sound when you first boot the game and see the logo spinning, the sound of the paper within each file folder, and that feeling of beginning each mission. It all flowed together perfectly. Even if the enemies and NPCs looked stiff, faces looked bad or doors closed with a bunch of clipping occurring on screen. Everything is put together very well. I appreciate the look into the other games, but nothing really took me by surprise because of what I expect from Goldeneye. I can’t expect a better game that isn’t first person either. It’s like the silo mission in Goldeneye. It’s like any level that puts together objectives and areas in a way that you as a player remembers them and enjoys the feeling of going back. You seek the same type of layout that flows together like a good recipe. OOT is a good recipe for a classic Zelda game. I consider it one of the best Zelda games for its simple yet beautiful layout. I see some games that of course play better, but aren’t as captivating. I think that’s beyond nostalgia because there are some Zelda games out there that are stuck in past or they barely scratch the surface. I would take OOT’s temples over the “temples” they had in BotW. The same could be said for 007. You can take me on a wild ride, but it won’t have that same sense of discovery. We saw that with Perfecr Dark on 360. It was just a bunch of places and objects that look like they’re from the same universe, but you aren’t exactly falling in love like it’s your new favorite vacation spot.

Been playing Goldeneye today on the dedicated 1964 emulator with m&kb. I said earlier in this thread I was never a fan being a PC snob but I agree, the improved controls make it a lot more enjoyable despite the relative simplicity of the game.

i haven’t played Goldeneye in years but it’s probably just as horribly dated and awful to play today like the Perfect Dark xbla remaster that did come out was.

I prefer the third person Bond games, but even other FPS ones are better to play today than Goldeneye.

Compared to the 3DS version, yes it is. Better framerate, nicer graphics, faster scrolling text, and gyro aiming was all it needed to be as good as it was. I wouldn't go back to the original though.

Definitely!
The 3DS version didn’t change the game’s layout, the map, or the objective. It added additional features to sharpen it up. It’s not like it was an edited version of the game. It was enhanced to make a better game. I don’t see what’s stopping a Goldeneye remaster from doing such that. The interesting thing to me is how they made the limited mobility, the limited cross hair with aiming, and the ability to move around a building flow together so well in Goldeneye. I don’t know if a lot of people remember that, but it was still doable. You could still pull out the game to this day and go around with your silenced PP7, taking out enemies one by one. I bet it could have been given the OOT treatment, but it hasn’t. It’s been added upon, mixed up, and the graphics changed. It still isn’t the same type of experience.

I don’t know about you, but I enjoyed BotW outside the dungeons. Seeing the world in BotW over the island was amazing. Discovering a new village while walking down a road was amazing. It just didn’t give me that feeling of getting a new tunic or that feeling of completing a dungeon. Most of the boss battles are the same enemy, but a different version. The whole end point was cool because it was always accessible. It just didn’t have that Deku Tree or that Forest Temple feeling. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t really satisfy me at times.

I like retro games because I grew up with them, but I am also someone who loves AAA and the changes that can be made. I do however feel that some games are timeless classics. They simply aren’t outdone. They’re enhanced and they become a lot more enjoyable to play. It’s like how the DS version of Chrono Trigger is the best version of the game to this day. They didn’t exactly change the game. They enhanced it. 007 is noteworthy because it was one of the best games on the N64. I do not exactly consider myself a huge N64 fan because there are only a handful of N64 games that stand out to me. Goldeneye, Mario 64, Waverace, 1080 Snowbording, Zelda OOT, and Pilotwings. As far as I’m concerned that’s all I would want out of a N64 mini or even an enhanced remaster. As far as the rest of the Bond games go. I really enjoy MGS. To the point where I don’t enjoy Splinter Cell. It’s too different in a lot of ways. Which is why new types or genres of Bond games don’t give me that exact same feeling.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like OOT. I just think the 3DS version had plenty of quality of life changes that make it hard to back to the 20 FPS original.

Oh come on man. Nobody here is seriously thinking this would sell and be as popular as cod. Get real. This was made for the OG fans. Just like perfect dark xbla was. Accept it for what it is. If you dont think ul like it, then move on. The game wont be released through legitimate means anyway.

I really liked nightfire.. killing fools with a remote controlled helicopter in split screen was damn fun, and yeah the levels were quite lovingly crafted, it felt..

Played the first 2 levels so far, so good. Definitely feels like 90%+ done, it's missing the Bond looking at watch music, music transitions like the end of Facility, and no main menu music after completing a mission.

So Phil was willing to cough up 7.5 billion to buy Bethesda but wasn't willing to go through with whatever it took to get this one game to release even though it was 90 percent finished. I'm glad it's out there now, even if the remade stuff doesn't look that great.

Okay, I'm hooked. This looks great imho. Yes, it's the same game but prettier – exactly what I want. I played through Goldeneye with M&KB a year ago or two, and it still holds up and is a fun FPS with an unmatched 007 atmosphere imho.

I want to play this one, badly. When they are talking about a "release" – do they mean a real, official release or a "it gets leaked on the internet and can eventually be torrented" 'release'?

It's leaked in 95% complete state. It's probably never getting an official release.
