And also the gaming part of the forum is a lot less mature and turns into weird console war nonsense that a lot of older posters don't want any parts of. You aren't going to get intellectual dialogue on any video game forum, really. It's either "NAME YOUR FAVORITE RPG!" or "Bro, PS5 is way better than XSX! No dude, XSX is way better! No, shut up, troll!"
There are... or were some strong parallels between how fanboys acted in Gaming and how others acted in Politics. Vastly different stakes, same mentality.

Whoa, I have so many thoughts on that.

Like, how did you get this amount of messages in such a short time?

More than half of your reactions are Likes, so why so sad about it?

How do you know that the laugh reactions aren't genuinely? Maybe you said something funny.

And more important, don't you find it a little bit awkward to whine about your emoji reactions in an internet forum?
Especially coming from someone who spams emojis all the time

It's not "kicking them" I just said there's no issue with wanting to be in a community with like-minded people. I have no issues whatsoever with any of them. And it's just a theory, I just said in that post that I'm not sure if that's the reason or not. It's more of a reading the tea leaves thing.

I think people started to go missing before all that stuff went down, but maybe it happened sooner than I thought.

I think a lot of people disagreed with limiting a topic of discussion on a forum that many felt was a protected space for debate. If memory serves, Mista Mista was a Muslim who essentially avoided the political forum due to the sweeping generalizations that could be found there, and his frustration with that. He's hardly Mr far right conservative who wanted an echo chamber, but he still walked away when he saw new rules being put into place.

nah man, not sure why either it's not a humble brag I find it very strange. Not sure how to search my post history but I think it was just yesterday 2 people independently made fun of me for having a private profile because they wanted to deep dive my posts for some reason.

My personal Discord account which does not touch NeoGAF and is completely public never receives random hateful messages; it is joined to 100s of servers

My spare account, associated only with NeoGaf and another channel, sat around for a while in the GAF Discord before receiving such messages; only after the rules changes in politics did I receive such a message

Take of that what you will, just food for thought

Everyone can see everyone’s post history just by searching “by: member.” It doesn’t matter if your profile is private.

That post was the day before yesterday.

Yeah him and someone else said something similar. Very strange, might just be me but when I disagree with someone I don't feel the need to dive through their profile.

So what am I going to find? Making your profile private, does absolutely nothing to mask your post history. It only closes your DMs.

You're such odd little person :pie_thinking:.

I mean we literally lost the heart and soul of the forum in terms of users. Most of the people that left or were banned had been here for a long time, they even stayed after the split to Era. We also lost many fun threads that were closed or nuked. I imagine the Ree thread was one of the most visited, at least it moved quickly.

We still have long time users and new users sign up everyday but it will take a while to replace Tess, Matt, Schrodinger Cat and more. We lost valuable posters from all over the globe, from Canada to Australia that contributed and posted a lot.

I still remember how the Remedy forums fell apart after a lot of prominent users left following the Alan Wake wars, among those yours truly. Sorry Remedy lol.

GAF will be fine of course, it's much bigger than the Remedy forums were and it will keep growing. It'll just take a while to get new users that contribute as much as the ones that were banned.

That's my opinion of course. I obviously don't know how things work behind the scenes.

I disagree with some of your first paragraph. Lots of them were 18/19 accounts, so not exactly long term members.

Yeah just some accounts who signed up and kept the forum going while it was on the brink, no big deal, while plenty of "long term members" with a mysterious post-history gap in late 2017 showed up to disparage Evilore and called the forum alt-right, nazis, racist, misogynistic, incels, etc...

I’m just pointing out 2 years isn’t exactly long term members before you start.

Who exactly is calling the forum alt right and nazis other than retards on the cesspit?
I know some of them came to gloat after Biden won and got banned.

The namecalling has been going on since the 2017 ResetERA split, and before.

The more common accusations -- which you omitted -- were some flavor of "misogynistic", whether that was because GAFers were still posting on a forum run by someone who [redacted accusation] or because people called out so-called "SJW agenda" in journalism and/or in videogames. The other common accusation was and still is "racism", where prominent members have blundered into threads, waved around the "you're a racist" wand, and later turned out to be wrong. Being called a racist on the internet is about as meaningful as being called an n word on the internet, so it's not like I'm complaining, just describing.

Y'know, the last few pages of this thread really shine a light on who is a GAFer and who is hastily putting on the mask. If nothing else, there's a clear distinction between posters who are trying to rubber-glue a new narrative to the wall and posters who actually remember the events of the last 12 months.

This thread -- this specific thread we're in -- was in many ways the "ground zero" for the gatekeeping and cliquishness.

If you didn't happen to know, go back to page 200-300-ish and see how it progressed from there to its current state. Spoiler alert: it's identical to how people are acting in the thread over the past month, just a shuffle of names and political leanings, but the same exact behavior.

Those of you who are now showing up to snatch up the new Meta OT mantle missed this little detail because... well... it's obvious you're just moving into the same territory where the old clique rose to prominence. Oops. Masks slipping again, but no one cares enough anymore.

Merely read back through this thread -- this specific thread we're in -- and you can easily see how this went from a "talk about GAF itself" thread to a "throw in metacommentary to annoy the OP" thread... slowly evolving over time until certain members turned it into a Dear Diary thread where select members would whine about how Nintendo was treated unfairly, or how SonyGAF needed to be put in its place, or how certain members were acting, or how people needed to act as bouncers (e.g. Matt404's cyberbully mantra, which Arcadia picked up and ran with) or some such thing.

Confronting the clique resulted in me getting shrieked at. You can read it yourself:

Again, those of you just showing up to mark new territory after this clique left wouldn't know because... well...

But in case I'm coming across as trying to take credit, the inadvertent author of the VirginGAF OT (currently edited out of existence) called THESE MEMBERS OUT, a month before I started to notice, and months before the election results and months before the meltdowns.

Did the staff take note? No. The staff enshrined the post as a joke that should be made fun of.

Now we have trolls trying to re-write history and insert themselves as grieving members of the community. The hypocrisy on display, while obnoxious, is also a pretty good way of shitting on the old clique, I'll admit. The trolls they labored to keep out through sheer muscle and intimidation are now dancing on their graves.

But since GAF is apparently moving away from shitting-on-others threads that spiral and spiral, I wonder how much valuable content these new rising stars will actually contribute to the forum.

As I have mentioned twice already, this history of this very thread tells us the trajectory of those posters. Thankfully, the future of the forum didn't rest on the shoulders of the clique that formed in this thread, nor will it rest on the shoulders of those quickly hurrying into their places. But the forum does need shoulders to rest on, which appears to be the present concern that people are raising.

I really haven't seen that many people just calling everyone a racist or misogynist on here. Maybe I've missed what you're referring to. People on REE might say that.

Also, remember that we've had at least a few prominent members banned for basically repeatedly posting racist material, usually racial IQ stuff which went on here for years.

Y'know, the last few pages of this thread really shine a light on who is a GAFer and who is hastily putting on the mask. Who is a real GAFer then? You're not cliquish at all, but this is kind of gatekeeping I guess, since you started using that word. Who are you upset with in here specifically?

Like I said above, I never thought you were cliquish or rude to anyone. But you're definitely not the only one that tried to confront these people. I got in tons of arguments with Matt, Arcadia, Brap, and on because they tried to run the forum as their own little special club where they were the anointed ones. I was very public about stating that I thought it was toxic, and was going to drag the forum down.

These kinds of things tend to happen in cycles, but so far I really haven't seen anything like that yet. Still, I think it's good advice for people to try and be on the lookout for that kind of thing and stop it early instead of letting it build and build until they think they run the forum. So yeah, I have no problem with that part of your post. It's similar to advice I've given to people on here generally. Try to just treat everyone equally without any dramatic in-groups or celebrity posters.

A big red flag is when you start seeing completely substance-free threads about certain people's in jokes that aren't really inclusive - like 20 threads on Brap being someone's kid, or MHK (GET ITT) threads. I haven't seen much like that yet. I also haven't seen a new group of people intent on bullying others and putting people down to build themselves up. I see some name-calling and trolling from old users, not new ones usually.

Again, those of you just showing up to mark new territory after this clique left wouldn't know because... well...

I called them out years ago, and I'm fine if you guys want to give me credit. All I'd ask is maybe people listen next time instead of trash similar warnings when they spring up down the line. But yeah, it's not about either of us. It's just about the health of the forum - and the discouraging of celebrity posters. Celebrity posters always lead to toxicity, bad moderation, and mass exodus. Happened in cycles on here a few times. Every time I called it out, I got mocked by almost everyone as well.

I haven't seen people rushing to fill any void yet, but I don't read this thread a lot. I've just seen in the last couple of pages, people trying to talk about bans because the ban thread is closed. But a new clique eventually will form, and the cycle will continue. So it's fine if people watch out for it more in the future. Basically just treat everyone fairly and equally. Don't treat certain people like they're better than everyone else on the forum, because they're not - and are often actually bad for the long term health of the forum.

Absolutely. Cliques don't have to have a bunch of people though. The concerted effort of a few people supporting each other regardless of their authenticity can be just as bad as a dozen.

Nah... only if they are mods or have undue influence to get people banned.

As long as the climate allows for them to be called out and ridiculed like anyone else, then they are a net value for any community.
