Microsoft is in talks to acquire Discord, a video-game chat community, for more than $10 billion

Acquiring Discord does nothing for me personally but it would be huge for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. It also shows the massive commitment and investment that Microsoft is making into Xbox and with interest rates very low, these rich as fuck companies are better off spending that money by investing it into acquisitions that make sense for the brand and bring in more money in the long term.

Microsoft straight up ruined Skype, so please stay the fuck away from Discord.
they straight up bought skype to keep it away from competitors like google so they couldnt steal their enterprise customers. the reason it sold so high because there was probably a bidding war.
they didnt give a shit about the consumer video chat market(thats why they let the old skype team do whatever the fuck they wanted). thats also why microsoft created teams, a homegrown product even though they already owned skype and coulda retooled it.

Now that was fast, I can see them buying them out unless Amazon buys them out to use for Twitch services. I don't see anyone else buying them out unless Tencent always tries to put their slimy hands on the buyout and tries to buy Discord out and when that happens Discord dies out.

I know this isn't likely to end well...why the disdain for MS? How does it affect Discord being what it is today and the short term post takeover?
Because most things Microsoft touches... burns.

As seen throughout this post. Skype, Mixer, etc. But who knows? Could be a good thing. Just highly doubtful.

Not in recent years. I would say it's just a common thing to hate on them. Ever since 2013 their image as a whole went down the drain. But in my opinion, I would put more trust in Microsoft over companies like Google, Apple, Amazon, and even Facebook.

Hahahaha. And people thought MS were done spending. People said they couldn’t afford to spend any more! Told ya they had plenty of lettuce. $2.5b more than Zenimax and it ain’t even a game publisher/studio.

meanwhile Sony bought Evo….lol. Sony getting another showing up.

I keep hearing Neogaf about some secret sony FUD discord group.

I have no idea what discord does, except maybe a modern mIRC? 🤷‍♀️

anyway this is good news for MS. They need to justify their trillon dollars valuation. Keep buying!

Just like Skype back in the day. Got something that's big competition? Acquire them.

And, like Skype and social media replacing instant messaging, something will replace Discord, fading it into obscurity. Or is Discord the end all be all?

I see virtually no upside to this. Like, in a perfect world you'd have Discord on Xbox as well, and it would be the same as on PC. In reality there will be some kind of broken integration and you'll start getting banned from Discord for using the wrong pronouns or some bullshit.

isnt discord mostly about porn? how does it help gaming?

It's heavily attached to every Twitch streamers community (& YT streamers aka Dr. Disrespect/Pewdiepie). It's literally the main form of communication for the fan base outside of stream chat. Even for non-streamers. Big & small.

If this goes through, no doubt GP subs will rise if Nitro Classic is included w/ a GP sub. Which would save me $5/m personally. Smart move by MS for more GP subbies.

Knowing microsoft, they'll probably force discord accounts to be connected to an Xbox Network account to inflate active user numbers like they usually do

Of course they will. They'll turn Discord into a giant FUD factory that can only be used by the Xbros to plot and conspire against poor Mother Sony.

Also the team at Digital Foundry will make up the new board of directors and get a big raise in their usual Xbox shill pay.

I don't know how to feel about this since Discord is in part taken by tencent, but also MS did wrong with Skype. But MS have won me with Visual Studio Code, C# and TypeScript in the last few years so I think they can do good given a solid plan, which wasn't exactly what they had for MSN + Skype

Microsoft is literally lighting money on fire. Why would you spend $10 billion on fucking Discord
$10 Billion seems VERY high, in all honesty, but a lot of the big tech companies have similar mindsets. Why take months and months, maybe even years, to crate your own version of something when you can just buy existing technology/established brand? There's no guarantee it will succeed, but it seems preferable to putting in the time and effort to create your own version of it.

Some ppl in here will cheer "just buy it... yesssssss!" but then look down on others that create their own version of something. It seems preferable to just buy something up versus trying to create something similar but "maybe" better. The mental gymnastics is amazing, I guess fanboys will fanboy.

Edit: Actually, $10 Billion seems like a good price for Discord. But, I swear there were rumors that Discord was looking to go public. If they did, they'd probably make more than that $10 Billion. It would be interesting if they sold to MS, it would be interesting to hear the thinking behind it. Versus going public and potential raising valuation above $10B. Discord is a very very popular platform.

I had no idea discord was a gaming based thing.
It's more that just gaming now I think.

Its all about expanding Azure. They tried getting tiktok and pintrest for the same reason..

This could be tied in to PC/Xbox gaming of course, but ultimately, its about their cloud business.
Yep,

It's a buy that makes sense for multiple parts of their business

So sony wastes money on evo and Microsoft wastes money on discord, nice

it think smash.gg acquisition by ms is more comparable to evo purchase by Sony, if they acquire discord there is nothing that Sony could do to respond, they don’t have to respond, ms obviously wants to become a brand that is synonymous with gaming (at least providing technology that powers different aspects of gamers life)

I really hope Discord will be released on Xbox then. Me and my friends started to use Discord even mainly for non gaming related things as it's convenient to have a free private channel with ability to call and videochat. But we also use it for cross platform games as they play on PC and me on Xbox when possible. But for now, I always need to use my phone for that which is pretty inconvenient.
Even at our students' community of the faculty we migrated from slack to discord. It's like MS Teams for private use in the end.
