Microsoft is in talks to acquire Discord, a video-game chat community, for more than $10 billion

they straight up bought skype to keep it away from competitors like google so they couldnt steal their enterprise customers. the reason it sold so high because there was probably a bidding war.
they didnt give a shit about the consumer video chat market(thats why they let the old skype team do whatever the fuck they wanted). thats also why microsoft created teams, a homegrown product even though they already owned skype and coulda retooled it.

Didn’t they also buy the software that became Teams? Anyways, it is quite crap on desktop (darn web based fake native macOS app eating up resources and refusing to use the OS’s notifications system). Sorry off topic...

Hahahaha. And people thought MS were done spending. People said they couldn’t afford to spend any more! Told ya they had plenty of lettuce. $2.5b more than Zenimax and it ain’t even a game publisher/studio.

meanwhile Sony bought Evo….lol. Sony getting another showing up.

Cheering for these kinds of things is so sad. You have really no clue.....

You have no idea what you are talking about. What do you think Evo is and what it can do for Sony? Does something only add if it's expensive?

One company to rule them all, one Bing to find them all, one subscription to bring them all and in the Azure bind them.

No more Discord for me if this is true.

If this happens, we will need to find another solution. It was nice while it lasted, not having to use Teamspeak and other self hosted options.

Damn. And Discord was doing so well.

Haha all your friends and people you follow will still be on discord because they arent gits who care whats happening right at the top of an app or what cloud server is on.

So bye i guess?

P.S If they go public I wonder how much they would be worth.

Has anyone ever used discord? What is it and why does it matter in making games run and play better?

Discord is massive, it's now the primary mechanism for developer/community->player interactions and official discords for most games are now expected. Plugged into this are probably the large/major clans and communities, as well as smaller communities setting up more intimate groups. Then you have most large streamers also using discord or maintaining a presence.

Even if they do acquire it, they won't be retiring it or making it xbox only. It's too big for other communities as well - from cars to sports. I'm guessing they will want to hook into the app and develop APIs for the xbox platform. It can replace things like LFG pretty quickly (or rather the tech behind it can leverage all of discords features). They can license those APIs for other platforms then (Discord is 1000 times better than game base on PS5 for example). Regardless of who ends up with it, I'd like to see someone develop something that means you don't need to leave the console to be a part of all these communities etc.

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
I don't think this acquisition has got anything to do with Xbox.
After 20 years of failure I guess they're just going to straight up buy the industry.
Microsoft is anything but a failure. And they more than 40 at this point.
Didn’t they also buy the software that became Teams?
I tried to look up the history of Microsoft Teams and didn't find anything about it being bought. They did try to acquire Slack and failed, so they just made their own competitor.

When I cross play with friends on PC the go to chat app we use is Discord, some of them refuse to use Xbox party chat so those of us on console have to also have a second device connected to Discord. It would be a nice QOL move for cross play if Discord was integrated into party chat.

Well, could go either way.

Slype is dead, their whole Mixer business failed. They clearly have a problem in this field that should be solved, buying Discord? Hum seems like another major venture that could go wrong but they´ll still have billions in the bank.

Cool good for Bill Gates.

Honestly who the fuck cares. I see people in here acting like they are a game company alongside Nintendo and Sony. It’s bullshit. They are one of the biggest companies on the planet. Monopoly on OS’s on every computer on the planet. They own their own media empire with MSNBC. No shit they have a lot of money.

Honestly it’s annoying to see bootlickers cheer them on. Like no shit they can buy companies they have more money and political influence than god.

it think smash.gg acquisition by ms is more comparable to evo purchase by Sony, if they acquire discord there is nothing that Sony could do to respond, they don’t have to respond, ms obviously wants to become a brand that is synonymous with gaming (at least providing technology that powers different aspects of gamers life)
I wonder if them potentially buying discord has to do with the change to Xbox network

These big tech companies really need to be split

it is funny that most of the time ms is not mentioned when people call out for big tech break down, it’s like ms is in a stealth mode and going unnoticed (compared to amazon, Facebook or alphabet) (probably DOD contracts help with it)

I know it is a gaming forum, but I think, if (and it is big if) ms acquires discord it might not be part of Xbox division

So sony wastes money on evo and Microsoft wastes money on discord, nice
Discord is much more significant to gaming in general than EVO, it’s how most guilds communicate and probably makes sense to them after acquiring Zenimax Studios. They had built a significant database to offer a subscription service similar to GamePass and gave up, so I’m sure that’s also useful to MS.
