Bloomberg: Multiple potential Buyers interested in Square Enix (Debunked: See OP)

It's Friday, and people who aren't good at actual news have to rumormonger to make the day. 😂

But hey, two anonymous "bankers" said that, must be true. 😂

Of course, we can expect the usual carousel of "I knew too!" and corny opinion pieces on this throughout the weekend.

PS: some need to be reminded that not all businesses *want* to be bought. It takes two parties to have a sale.
These leaks are generally done by the corporate advisors for the target in the acquisition to drive up the price during an active bidding war. In all likelihood there is an acquisition in the works.

I am not sure what exactly is going on with game publishers... everyone wants billions to get out of the business ??

Stock price rose up 13+%

I remember the rumors were that Square could sell its western division, now the whole thing? I even remember the statement that back in 99' Microsoft was about to acquire Squaresoft until they raised their price at the last meeting.

The question is, what motivation Square does have now to do it?

Yeah, at this rate EA would sell themselves for Microsoft.

Does anyone know if Square Enix is even interested to be on sale or is this just one of those console war ammunitions type of thread?

Totally. Just like sports trades and salary rumours.

ptobably the only industry in the world the employees want public salaries. So they can play off against one another hiking up contracts.

There were two MS is buying EA rumours. 2008 and I think 2017 or 2018. Two false alarms.

Can companies do that? Leak false M&A rumors to boost stock prices, that’s kinda crazy if they can lol
I have no idea.

If there are any insiders here, can you at least put us out of our misery and tell us who it is or isn’t or if this is even true?

This is one of many companies that are being looked at OR looking to change hands. As i have talked about before the levels of money right now are to the point where those NOT thinking of selling things may
Care to give us a hint?

Im usually more of an xbox guy, but if final fantasy or kingdom hearts had to be exclusive, id rather if it was for playstation. A lot of history and legacy their. But hopefully they arent purchased by one of the console makers so everyone can still play these games. I love having access to all these final fantasy games on xbox and gamepass

"Two bankers told me this" isn't that much better than "My uncle who works at Nintendo."

If Sony or Nintendo wants in, they will have a slight advantage just by virtue of being a Japanese company. The Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act in Japan highly restricts acquisitions of Japanese companies by foreign entities. Not that it's impossible, but it's a lot harder for an American company to acquire a Japanese company than a Japanese company acquiring another Japanese company.

Sony wants more IP for games, movies and TV. They’ll get it.
I’m not saying it’s Sony or anybody but this makes sense. Sony sees values in squares games hence the nonstop timed exclusives. Seems like it’d be a major 180 to go from ignoring Xbox almost all last generation to being owned by them. I get MS has money so who knows. Hope none of it’s true.

Here we go. Bidding war between Sony and Microsoft I am guessing. Whoever wins, gamers lose.

If all these third parties go first party, we will have to purchase both consoles every gen for games that have no reason being exclusives. I really dont see publishers like SE, Zenimax and Ubisoft struggling with gaming being more profitable than ever.

Oh well, it will be interesting to see if Sony can outbid Microsoft. I highly doubt it, but I am guessing Jim will probably draw the line here and Phil would probably just keep increasing the bid to make it a more expensive purchase than it needs to be.

Not sure who else might be interested in buying SE. EDIT: Tencent!

Games don't need a reason to be exclusive other than to sell consoles, be niche, and memorable for that specific console. Gamers don't lose because of exclusives, even third party games going exclusive, gamers lose when publishers nickel and dime them with content that belongs in F2P games.

I hope Sony acquires them.

And PC or maybe even Nintendo. Microsoft buying SQE is a win for gamers.
It's really not, Microsoft has next to no support for Japanese developers and they'd plague Square games with even more predatory content. Game Pass is a digital only service that potentially can exist solely to prevent people from purchasing physical media, as Microsoft gets most of the profits off of them. What's actually more "pro-gamer" is letting the one with an actual relationship with them to work even closer together and allow the company's profits to soar even higher (Sony).

It’s not going to be Nintendo. It’ll be Sony.

If there is anyone that can rebuild Square Enix is Sony.
There games fit more the style of PlayStation exclusives.

Imagine the next Tomb Raider on Naughty Dog's engine.
or Avengers on Spiderman's engine.
It will also bring them up to be one of the top developers like Insomniac Games with Spiderman.

I would love to see Microsoft purchasing Square Enix just to watch the Meltdowns :D

But in the End I highly believe that it would be the right thing in this case if Square Enix would stay 3rd Party instead of getting bought by Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or any other Company!

But it would be still a smart move by Microsoft because this would open the Door to Japan for Microsoft ;)
