what i know, japan has law that restrict their big firm/company from being acquired by foreigner and last year their MOF even tighten their rules.

here is the list of those company that under these law.
square enix indeed in the list.

i do not know much about stuff like this, hopefully anyone who knowledgeble can correct me or explain more about this.

edit: what it mean here, any foreign entity who want to buy stake more than 1% will be subjected to strict pre-screening

For what it’s worth jez said he doesn’t think ms will purchase SE and he’s one of the more reliable Xbox insiders. So who knows what he’s knows.

With that said I’d like to point out that after the Bethesda acquisition we’ve seen multiple Xbox partner studios decide to remain independent or take offers from other huge corporations in the form of investments. If Xbox aligned studios are unwilling to gobbled up by them why would sqaure, whose basically ignored Xbox for almost 5 years decide to be owned by them? Like let’s say Microsoft offered 12 billion and Sony 10 billion. Wouldn’t it make sense as a business to stick with your actual fan base instead of a couple extra billion in such a scenario? I have no idea but I hope sqaure remains independent.

Microsoft probably looking to really get into Manga, Anime, arcades and film..... it makes total sense, they have a huge investment in all those areas. /S

This doesn't mean foreign companies cannot buy those firms. Anytime a foreign company wants to buy more than 10% of a Japanese publicly owned company it must be approved. For those 518 the percentage has been lowered from 10% to 1%. If there is a bidding war for Square Enix and only Japanese companies could bid then who would the suitors be? Only Sony has both the cash and interest out of the Japanese companies I can think of.

Edit: Actually, I guess Nintendo is always a possibility.....

It makes more sense for Sony to purchase Kadokawa because of manga and anime but they probably won't.

Sony and some other companies have shares in Kadokawa, the reason they do not have to buy them is because they will be so dependent on Sony to distribute their Anime worldwide..

Square is about 70% gaming and the rest is anime, manga, arcade and film. A big part of gaming is mobile too....

They also have over 5000 staff to manage.

It would be several times more complicated than Zenimax and add a language and cultural difference....... it would be a total shitshow for msft.

As much as I respect Microsoft, they don’t seem to love Square as much as Sony does. Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360 was a big move, but not exactly earth shattering for them.

Oh yeah I bet gamers aren't thinking of the culture differences on how American and Japanese business's are being run. If they were to merge, one would have to dominate over the other.

1) typically the highest bid does win, its hard to tell shareholders that you are doing your duty by accepting a lower offer
2) yes, that Japanese law could block MS but it isn't something that I think Governments want to do to companies of other democratically elected countries. It would cause some weird geo-politics.

I think nothing is going to happen here but if so, maybe Sony will be forced to overpay and they might do for their mobile gaming division.

Nintendo receives a lot of games from Square as does Sony, if one wins over the other then it would be a big loss for gamers.
Then we won't need to have games downgraded on their weak shitty console. I'd say it's a win. Nintendo's by far still the most anti-gamer company right now.

Sad, to see some people rooting for 3rd party consolidation. It just keeps others from playing games, no one gains anything.
Microsoft will definitely try with big money but relationship wise it would make sense with Sony or Nintendo.
Yeah, it's highly destructive. Doubt they want to sell though!

Sell the Dragon Quest IP to Nintendo and then you do whatever Squeenix. You fucks should have finished Jensen's story before it came to this.

Hopefully this goes nowhere, we need SE games on more platforms, not less.

Unless things truly are different under this new leadership, I don't see Nintendo going for this.

Sony is the obvious choice but in my head that doesn't make much sense since a lot of their games already launch as PS exclusives, unless they would only be buying them to prevent another 1st party from snatching them.

I don't know that Microsoft is as unlikely as some would like to think. They have a noteworthy partnership right now with Life is Strange/Tell Me Why, Dragon Quest XI S and all the Final Fantasy games on Game Pass, plus Outriders on GP day 1 and allegedly several more SE titles will be coming later as well. If MS can I think they will, but it'll be an uphill fight.

If it's a non-Japanese company that ends up with them, I could see it being Epic. They still have all that Fortnite money and are looking for ways to attract people to their store, and they already paid them for the Kingdom Hearts PC port, I could see them viewing SE's IPs as a foot in the door to get more people using EGS.
