The Father - cinema

I thought this film had left our cinemas in Australia but when my wife was looking up times for Wrath of Man she saw that there were 3 sessions for this film so we insta bought our tickets.
And yeah, this movie is amazing, Anthony Hopkins is amazing, everything is amazing. It does such a great job of disorienting you and putting you in the mindset of someone who has dementia. We'll obviously never really know what it's like to have dementia but the film helps you understand what it is they might go through on a daily basis. The second half of the film had me tearing the fuck up as it made me think about my nanna and the things she has said before.

Thanks, I'll give this a watch and be prepared for the waterworks. My Pa had 11 years of hell with that, saw a lot first hand of what it does to your loved ones and those that have to care for them too. My Nana solo looked after him for 8 years of those 11.

Wasn't sold on the trailer. It looked like Willis was one of those robot toys from the 80's that just has limited movement and a few phrases through a bad speaker
Bruce Willis pretty much just got paid to stand around and chat for this movie for the most part. The speaker thing threw me off cause he actually did talk through a speaker like device a couple times in the movie.

Don’t bother, the movie ends long before they even come close to completing their journey so you have to make your own ending...

Another laughably bad Netflix production. It's not the actors' fault, they all do a good job but the plot and ending is just garbage. I am going to cancel my subscription at the end of the current month. 99.9% of what they produce is utter garbage.

Without Remorse (2021) - Amazon - ★★☆☆

It's odd in that while the production values are great, the acting good all around, and pacing leaves one engaged - it's just not terribly interesting and completely forgettable. It feels like a knock off of a Clancy property rather than the authentic deal.
My feeling too. I didn't really enjoy this like I was hoping to. Not enough action to be a bootleg John Wick. Not enough espionage to be a proper Clancy flick. Kinda meh, although the prison fight was kinda cool.

At the risk of revealing my poor taste in movies, I wanted to share 2 gritty heist flicks that I enjoyed over the past 2 years.

Dragged Across Concrete

Wait...don't stop reading because you see that Vince Vaughn is in it. It's got a low-key high-quality cast, and is one of the grittier crime dramas I've seen in a while. It's not fast-paced, but I wouldn't say it's a slow burn either. I found the pacing of the story kept me intrigued throughout, and it does a great job of getting you familiar with its characters. It also has a satisfying end. This one surprised me, as it got no buzz here overseas.

Den of Thieves

Bootleg Heat. A poor man's Heat. Knock-off Heat. I don't care what faux insults people throw at this film, because all the comparisons come back to Heat, one of the great heist movies of my time. That should say it all. It apes a lot of the cop-criminal dance that goes on in Heat, but brings its own modernized flavor to the formula. I love this movie. I stop to watch it everytime it's on TV. The aural pleasure of its major shootouts is better than the best music you can listen to. Pablo Schrieber makes you forget that he was the lead during the worst season of The Wire. 50 Cent makes you forget that he can't act. Gerard Butler snarls and growls his way to a convincing performance. I'm not kidding, the characters were written and directed well here. This film is my guilty pleasure. I will fight anyone who says this isn't an awesome flick. Come at me bros.

Finally saw Hateful Eight yesterday. Thought it was fantastic. Knew going in that it was slow, so the pacing didn't bother me a bit.

Prefer it over Django by a country mile.

Same, its a classic who done it movie, and they don't make films like that much anymore

The Invisible Man (2020)
It was alright but had a lot of stupid writing moments. Eg.

She took an invisible suit and instead of putting it on she hid it away in a different room.

There was also a point where she had a gun in hand and he was standing completely still focusing on killing other people and she just watched.

She found his phone and keys which would have proven he was alive due to the phones content but she didn’t bother taking them.

That sort of poor writing irks me, I can’t rate it any higher than a 4 due to those stupid moments .

The beginning also isn’t clear in what’s going on either. And there was another stupid no-sense writing scene in that too involving a dog.

Agreed. The writing of that movie kind of feels like it didn't screen well so they did a second pass on the screenplay and filmed some reshoots.

What? How? I've never heard anyone say they prefer this to Django. Its 90% dialogue and not even peak Tarantino dialogue. It had its moments but I have to strongly disagree with you there.

Django just had some dumb moments, like the dancing horse scene, and QT accent he does lol.....plus django was more kill bill vibe, hateful 8 is more reservoir dogs, 1 basic location played out

Django had more 'moments', but I just prefer the subtle unravelling of hateful 8

Django is still awesome tho (apart from the dancing horse)

If you had been through that much of an ordeal as Django had.. you might celebrate with a little bit of horse dancing. I know I would.

You're right about the Australian accent. Tarantino never really excelled as an actor. The only movie he was ever good in was From Dusk Til Dawn.

Agree, as dont get me wrong i love django, I just love that H8 is more of a classic Western, with a twist of QT, django is full on blaxploitation Western, which is fine, just different styles

Holy shit this movie was funny. I didn't think Crowe nor Gosling had comedy in their wheelhouse but they were both fantastic. The dialog is something else. I was laughing nearly the entire time. So many memorable quotes.

Last night I watched the first Hellboy. I'd caught bits and pieces of it on TV over the years but never sat down and saw the whole thing through.

Damn, that was incredible occult fantasy action. Absolutely my favorite Del Toro movie out of all I have seen. Supremely excellent casting, Ron Perlman just IS this character, and the rest of the cast is perfect in their roles. The whole Nazi occult stuff was really cool I am a huge geek about that kind of stuff if you name drop the Spear of Longinus I will squee. I appreciated how the movie almost started almost where Raiders of the Lost Ark sort of ended with the cool supernatural setpiece. Great way to open a movie like this! Yet it wasn't just dumb action, there was character stuff and a love plot and yet not too much time was wasted, but the pacing was just right. It felt like an extremely efficient script. Some of the action was a little stiff but almost in the way that the Tim Burton Batman movies are, it looks a little off for a movie but feels like comic book images brought to life. Del Toro has an eye for fantasy.

Scene of the movie was when the Nazi clockwork experiment gets up from the operating table and moves to put on his gear. Just insanely creepy and great use of framing and blocking. You don't really get a good look at the guy, and that makes it all the creepier. This is the kind of old school filmmaking technique you rarely see these days. I read that he tried to hire Harryhausen to advise on special effects, but he turned it down because of the violence. Honestly, I found even that pretty tasteful, and I am a super whim when it comes to gore. But you can see that Del Toro is really influenced by that old pulpy b-movie style, much like George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg used to do.

Shame they never made a third. I still need to watch the sequel to this. Great stuff!

I cant unsee the salamy's on his head.

I've wanted to watch this for years, and finally got a version with Thai subs (for my gf). It was worth the wait. A western with some minor fantasy elements thrown in. This one is a slow burn, but the third act generates some nice thrills, and gives each of the small cast of characters their individual moments to shine. I found the dialogue to be mostly good, with a surprising number of laughs throughout. This is Matthew Fox's best role of his career. Kurt Russell delivers, as always, and rocks even better western facial hair than Hateful Eight and Tombstone. Patrick Wilson can't seem to shake the yuppy off in any film I've seen him in, but it doesn't get in the way in this movie. The Rotten Tomatoes score for this one was well-earned.

A Writer's Odyssey

The gf picked this one randomly, and I applaud the selection. This is one of those story in a story films. It's Chinese, so you'll have to endure subtitles. However, if that's not an issue, then it's one of the best fantasy films to come out of China in the past few years. A father's search for his missing daughter sees him get mixed up in a complicated plot that warps the boundary between fantasy and reality. It's hard to describe things without giving away too much, as the character reveals add to the enjoyment of the viewing experience. I felt that these reveals were delivered in a well-timed manner, and didn't rely on a raft of exposition dumps. There are some of those, but they serve mostly to fill in the blanks between the elements that you piece together on your own. I can see Netflix scooping this up in the near future.

Django is a fantastic movie in its own right, don't get me wrong. But Hateful Eight is grittier, with some truly exquisite cinematography. I truly regret not seeing it in theatres.

Plus, despite being much longer, Hateful Eight felt tighter. Every shot and every interaction meant something to the story be it a jellybean or talking about how good the coffee is. Django has an entire third act that sort of meanders and repeats itself. It should've logically ended after Schultz died, with Django beating the bad guys in the ensuing firefight. Instead, after a cool firefight, he gets captured, THEN goes back to the house, THEN beats the bad guys in an ensuing second firefight. Always thought that was an odd storytelling decision since the capture & escape sequence adds nothing to the character or plot that we didn't already know.

Fruitvale Station - Google Play

Finally watched this after years of meaning to. Very good movie and Michael B Jordan really excels in the role. The beginning of the film shows you the ending so you know where the story is heading and as that ending gets closer you are dreading seeing what happens. It's a pretty horrible and depressing story but it's a good story and it's unbelievable that it's based on a true story. Over 10 years later and still the same sort of thing is happening in American society.

watched Shadow In The Cloud last night. seen someone in here mention it. seemed interesting at first but was left confused. wtf were the monsters and the "twist" didn't make sense. maybe it was just me being thick lol. also, if you really like Chloe Grace Moretz you'll like the movie. i know she is the main cast member but it's only here for a large part of the movie.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I'll say that the end battle scene was commendable, and I think that Helena Bonham Carter is the perfect actress for Bellatrix Lestrange. Her performance was outstanding as far as these films go. Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood was incredible as well, thought she nailed the character. Delores Umbridge and Professor Dumbledore also had a very strong presence in this film, I was very happy about that

The movies take a backseat to the books without question. I've learned to temper my expectations with these Harry Potter films but they serve as a fun way to relive some of the great moments in the books

i put Mulan (live action) on last night through Disney+. i know there was a lot of controversy but i'm not sure why. to be fair i've only watched half of it so far. i was enjoying it but it feels so slow i couldn't believe i was only 40 minutes in and then i watched another 15-20 minutes before stopping. i might go back to it later. never seen the original version. maybe i should've watched that first.

Just rewatched Baby Driver, still a great film. I noticed that the lyrics to Harlem Shuffle at the beginning are spread throughout the scene as graffiti, stickers, signs, and such. Pretty cool.
i need to rewatch it. it's been a while.

I stopped on Mulan halfway through as well. It probably didn't help that I watched the animated feature for the first time a few months back, so really nothing was new.

As a series you can't deny theyre well done, the first 2 are a bit meh, but mainly due to the age of the actors, but by the 3rd film thats not really and issue

HP: PoA is probably my favorite out the series

Never read the books, so no reference

The first book is a really quick read and will let you know if you like Rowling's YA stuff. Her writing is pretty unique so you'll know quickly.

I like her Robert Galbraith novels myself. I only ever read her first Potter.

This was basically the start of Commando and then a generic action thriller involving revenge. Also, which special forces soldier breaks into a room, where they know there's an enemy sniper and have an empty magazine in their gun? Utter nonsense popcorn movie. Switch your brain off.

Surprisingly enjoyable. When you see "John Cena" in the cast, (or any wrestlter outside of The Rock) you immediately think it'll be garbage. But, this is directed by Doug Liman (Edge Of Tomorrow, Mr & Mrs Smith etc) and is very much like the movie "Phone Booth", minimal cast, same location throughout and it's aim is to keep your gripped, and it does a fairly good job of that.

Neighbours from Hell
Compiling my summer movie watching list. So far I have:

Lost in Translation
Sideways
Office Space
Terminator 2
No Country For Old Men
National Treasure 1 and 2(yeah they're stupid as hell, but good summer fun treasure hunting flicks)
Drive
Avengers Infinity War and Endgame
Ready Player One
Collateral
The Big Lebowski

Others I'm considering, just don't know if I feel like watching them again, as I saw them last summer, but I like watching them in the summer:

Troy
Full Metal Jacket
Gladiator
The Da Vinci Code - movie isn't very good, but for some reason I like watching it late at night to help me wind down
Angels & Demons - same as above, maybe it's Tom Hanks screen presence that eases my brain

Another 80's favourite of mine that I re-watched after finding out it has got a (long overdue) Blu-ray release.

bU5DoFI.jpg

It's a very light film, small budget etc. It's a great example of the smaller films that the UK used to knock out back then.
It is set in Edinburgh at a time where Scotland as a whole was being shafted by Thatcher's Tory party.
Two young men decide they have had enough of the shitty hand they are being dealt and decide to do something about it.
The plan? Disguise themselves with props from the joke shop, where one of them is (barely) employed and hold up tourist coaches.

It's a great "small film".... real feel good stuff and with a fantastic soundtrack by Scottish (well one half of them) rockers Big Country.
I think Amazon may have it available to stream, or at least they do in the UK for a couple of quid, not sure about on the other side of The Pond.

Well worth 90 minutes of your time.
More so if you are a fellow relic of those times ;)

The books are incomparable to the movies. I think the cast selected for Harry Potter is nearly 10/10 but there have been many times where the directors have failed to recreate the greatness of certain moments in the books. PoA and GoF are the films that are most guilty of this, and disappointed the most. SS, CoS, and OotP (films 1, 2, and 5) have been fairly well adapted but I think the 3rd and 4th films could have been much better. Not to say that they aren’t good, but the directors definitely fucked up a few times; failed to replicate some important scenes. I especially take issue with the director of the 4th film. He butchered the beginning. He also completely missed out on a very important part of the story; entirely omitted an important character who played an incredible yet modest role in helping Harry Potter. But the director of the fifth film directed the following three Harry Potter movies I think so I’m betting the rest will be a great show

Okay so I've seen Wrath of Man and Nobody at the theaters. Wrath of man was pretty good but it kind of felt like a high brow action drama. Was kinda shocked at how many characters died in this movie. The movie was okay and I like how they showed how everything came about in the movie. I'd give the movie a C+ because it is not my taste in movies but my movie nonbiased rating would be a B- since it was solid but doesn't really do anything great. Feels like we have seen everything done before and better. I also was expecting a lot more brutality for a movie called Wrath of man.

I just got back from the theaters today and watched Nobody. It is a mixture of John Wick and the equalizer. You have someone who seems like your average joe who turns out to be a retired super deadly person. A situation happens that slowly wakes him up and brings out the old him similar to John Wick and then he goes all equalizer on the bad guys. The difference though with this movie is that this movie is more fun/goofy than the equalizer but not as beautifully skillfully deadly as Wick. His original fights were more realistic until the last stand at the end. They just went full on crazy at the end which made it an absolute blast. Loved what little we saw of his dad and brother. I'd give this movie a rating of A-. Great action and an enjoyable film. I hope they make another movie and focus more on him and his father and brother since I like the group fight they had and the conversations.

Okay so I just watched Zach Snyder's army of the dead movie. Ultimately my thought on the movie is that it was meh. Really disappointed since I was hoping that this would change my opinion on Snyder movies. He is always a bit off on his movie for me. I like them but I always feel like if they had made a few more tweaks then it would be amazing. Issues with the movie would be the cast although diverse in characters weren't given enough room to really express it most of the time. The main character was boring and a pushover. Like seriously if your going to use Batista make him a complete badass in the movie. I think he has like one scene where he just straight up wrecks some zombies wwf style. The other characters have some flavor but they just aren't spicy enough in the movie. They really covered the diversity race card since they had all of them for the most part in the movie. The action was pretty good at times. They really allowed some characters to really shine in the knife or gunplay department. You can pretty much figure out how the movie is going end almost 15 minutes into the movie. The movie also dragged some times. They probably could have cut 15- 20 minutes from the movie. I'd give this movie a rating of C-. I'd say it was barely enjoyable.

Amadeus (1984)

I watched this movie literally a dozens of times, but this time - I watched with my 14 year old daughter.
I've been going thru some of my favorite movies with her off and on when she's with me - pop some popcorn and soda, and pop in the old DVD, not even Bluray.

This movie amazes me every time I watch. Storytelling, acting, costume, music and all - and leaves you with amazement. My daughter was quite taken by this movie as well.

The DVD that I have is so old (one of the earlier DVD releases) - that it's recored on both side of the DVD... so I actually had to flip it for the 2nd half of the movie. She got kick out of such old tech.
At the same time, I'm actually glad after 20+ years, this thing actually still plays.

So since I'm on vacation today I watched:

Woman in the Window
Oxygen

Both are great movies but honestly Oxygen surprised me in such a good way. Best Sci-fi I've seen since Arrival. Really damn good.
Ooh, thanks for the recco. I saw the trailer for Oxygen last night, and didn't know if I should bother. Now I'll definitely give it a watch.
