...always bring 1-2 buddy with me. ...

...but obviously not expecting any outcome. I have reported the kijiji ad as scam.
Yeah, I mean, if you feel the need to bring other folks with you and you've been scammed before, I mean...like my father used to say, "fuck me once, shame on you, fuck me twice, shame on me."

Might make sense to just pay the extra to get this stuff at a store with the guarantee you get the product you're paying for. Maybe you have a gambling problem?

BeforeU

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
You knew the building she was in and you didnt call the police on the phone right awa......oh....right

Be sure to report as much detail about her to the police as you can.

Go to the police station and file a police report, being sure to show them the counterfeit/fake phone and box. It may have fingerprints still on it from her. Take it serious. Don't laugh or joke around or they'll think you aren't serious. You may not be the only victim and your case could be a part of a larger network/ring. If you have house/apartment insurance, see if theft is covered. If so, figure something out.. Anyway, more than likely she/they will do it to another, again. She'll probably go through the money in a few days and have an urge to keep doing it. Keep an eye out for another ad. Look for similar wordage and when you find the ad, immediately notify the police. Let them set something up to catch her. It's not worth getting into a tussle with street trash. The less criminals know about you, the better. Also, don't use selling platforms which have minimal safeguards, checks and balances in place.

Normally Id say live and learn but you know where she lives. Call the police and have them go through security cameras.

So she doesn't live there, I went back to as soon as I found out, in literally 2min after seating in my car.

She played us big. Called us in a rental apartment lobby, so we know its safe and she lives there. She came inside from back door (I feel like someone let her in) where there is a huge parking lot, has access to main road directly from there. This was a layout which I have not seen before. So we paid her, took the phone and went to our car from main door, as soon as I found out, i jumped out of my car and tried to went inside but obviously i would have to wait for someone to open the door, took about ~3 long min and someone opened and i couldn't find her anywhere, and just saw the exit door few meters from where we were standing. As soon as I opened, there it was. a huge parking lot, which is not accessible by the front, and directly connects to the main road. And I realized, someone was just waiting for her with their car, as soon as she got the money, they left.

Now coming to the police....FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK the POLICE.

I call the building security and super told me i need a police report to access video footage. So I go to the police station, its closed. (COVID) lol fucking hell. So i call, they said its non emergency so call other number they gave me. i wait 20min and gave up, the automated msg said if its theft/fraud under $500 just report it online. So at that moment I knew, this must be a regular thing, and they wont do jackshit. So I open online reporting, and guess what, I can't even find this fucking apartment in their address book, its keep saying its invalid address, try again. Any near by address everything invalid.

police are useless, they won't do shit. I will keep trying to report the issue.

So what are the real specs of the fake phone? Allwinner, 720p, 1GB?

I will send the full video soon

lol what are you talking about? This is the first time I have been scammed in 15 years of buying/selling stuff from kijiji. I just take extra people just for precaution and what you hear in news. But me personally have never had bad experience. Here people buy phones on contracts, or buy it from US and sell it for quick buck. You can easily get it for 200-300 discount on a sealed box, sometimes even more discounted price. With he receipt, so all your warranty is also covered. Anyways, I don't want to get into with argument with people who thinks, just save $300 extra and buy it from retailer.

Hey OP life is all about learning from your mistakes. Be better in the future this won’t be the only time you will get fucked over in some way.

look out for good amazon warehouse deals. And then save one in your basket.

then when primeday is on. You will get 10% off extra on all warehouse deals. Getting discount on discount is the best.

i snagged a fold 2 for 500 😂👌

I went to sell a Galaxy Note and the guy didn't show up on time then right when it got dark he comes walking up. He was acting strange and I handed him the phone to check out and he handed me the money folded up and took off. I opened the money and it was counterfeit. So I will never meet again for an expensive item unless it is at a police station.

One time I went to buy a drone and the guy tried getting me to meet off the road a ways in a empyty old parking lot and I said no I'm here at the gas station. A few minutes later he comes walking up but with another person. I kept my back to my vehicle and checked out the drone. While checking it out an SUV pulls up full of people about 30 feet away and the other guy is over there talking and they keep looking at me. I give the guy the money but it wasn't exact change and was 10 extra. He said why don't you give me and my friend a ride to my bank and I'll get you that change. I said he'll no and hopped in my car, they would have robbed me for sure.

That’s sad…. Money we work for :(

Long time ago ex gf got scammed, she bough a camera on the street (facepalm), she called me super happy to tellme about her brand new camera. I don’t trust those stuff so I ask her if she have the camera on her hands, she said “yes in the box, he show me how it used so is ok”.

I ask her to open the box again and… nice rock she got. Lols. those guys just swap the item when they put it in the bag.

finally who lost money was me, i bought her a new camera 😅

There is a whole little town somewhere that is just an economy of grifters who travel across the US pulling those white van scams, farming equipment scams, paving and roofing scams, insurance scams etc. They even have their own factories to build the knock-off items.

Instead of reporting the ad you should have messaged as a new person looking for a phone and set up a new meetup...they likely have many of these

Some people get conned out of a home, family and fortune because they thought they were too smart to fall for a player.

A lesson we all must learn. Your lesson only cost you a grand. Ive seen far worse.

This sucks, but it wont happen to you again, and probably not your friends or future children after you share this story.

Don't beat yourself up dude. Learn, adapt, improve. If you can do that, you win.

Could you not report this to police? I mean it's a lot of money. Here if someone steal more than 5000CZK (~250USD) it's criminal offence.

The only time i was scammed was in cuba, me and my friend smoked all the weed we brought with us from italy by day 4 of a 14 days trip and we were desperwte because nobody in varadero had weed or hash or nothing and laws are uber severe there, if a guy sells weed to a tourist he get 20 years without even a trial so everybody was scared to even talk about that.
Long story short, we had to do a 3 hours trip to the havana zone and after a couple of adventures we ended with tea instead of weed...

The one time I got scammed was as a teenager. Dude on Facebook was selling betting tips, he had pictures of dozens of older bet slips to prove that he's really good. I sent him the 30 bucks he wanted for one tip and he immediately blocked me. In hindsight, that was a very cheap lesson. I was mad as fuck though and doxxed his entire family. Didn't bring me my money back though, he lived in some shithole in Serbia and cops wouldn't do anything about the scam anyway.

Trade in your old stuff at GoRecell (Canadian, but international shipping). I got almost 2 grand for an ipad pro and two iphones (one of which was working but had a massive crack--still got $300) and completely paid off my Note Ultra 5G--as opposed to the actual retailers and carriers who give you back maybe $200 tops for your old device.

That way you can still buy from the carrier or even Samsung directly and not have to worry about this shady crap.

Yes, they're aggressive assholes who become almost confrontational when you turn them down.

But OP and everyone else, remember - Craigslist and those types of sites should only be used for cheap junk where you're not going to lose out on too much money if something is wrong with the item (like a garage sale or flea market). NEVER buy a phone, game console, computer, etc. from those sites unless it's a cheap piece of crap. Also, be careful with meeting up with certain people on there when selling or buying. There's lots of normal people on there but also some scumbags that can ruin the experience for you if you're not careful. Some of them can even be dangerous.

Call me cheap, but damn 1k that's a lot of money for a phone. Especially a fake phone. Sorry OP.

Oh it can go far worse men. friend of mine had a laptop that was like 3 grand that he won from some show. he ended up selling it for like 2k as it was brand new in the box still. Some girl wanted to pick it up so he gave his home address. one guy showed up at the door and stated he was there to pick up a laptop for his sister, she confirmed it through sms.

He opened the door, got his head smashed in, another guy came out of the car smashed his head in even further destroyed half of his shit in his home in search for money and took his girlfriends jewerly. ( he broke his eye socket / nose / few teeth gone, jaw broken ) basically they just slaughtered him. His girlfriend came home at the same time which made those shitters panic, they bailed out of the house straight towards her, any threatened her while robbing her with "any message to the police, we know where u life its going to be the end of you".

Fucking awesome man.

months of recovery, moved because didn't feel safe anymore, fucking trauma. And that all for a fucking laptop.
I’m somewhat confused. What was so awesome about your friend getting his shit kicked in? Doesn’t seem very awesome to me man.

Yeah, that their boss accidentally left some speakers in the back or some shit.

He was very obviously being sarcastic.
Read the damn statement before responding. I said I wasn't familiar with that sarcastic expression. I don't use terms which can be misunderstood one way or another. "It was an absolute shitshow" now that leaves nothing to the imagination.

I arranged to meet up with this person from kijiji (its craglist of canada), I always try to do safe transaction. So daylight, and good location and always bring 1-2 buddy with me. In this case, she called us at the apartment lobby. So that seems safe to me, lot of people going in and out.

Anyways, so we reach there, and the phone was sealed (galaxy s21) weight felt good with receipt. ofc the imei number on the box matched with the receipt. We insisted to have it open, she said once its broken, you have to buy it. I said ofc, if the phone is good and working i am buying it. So she actually opened the box (I applaud her confidence), showed me the phone in her hand and actually turned it on. the Samsung logo and bootup came up. silly me who didn't take it from her hand and observed it further.

I hand her the money and left. As soon as we sit in the car. I take the phone out and immediately felt something was wrong. Screen seems cheap, after further inspection camera were fake. And ofc she just disappeared somewhere in the building. Didn't pick up my phone either. I felt sick to my stomach.

TDLR

got scammed $1000 CAD, replica version of S21. Never again buying anything like this. I am sad GAF, really really sad. And there is nothing I can do.

I am going to police station to report it, but obviously not expecting any outcome. I have reported the kijiji ad as scam.

Damn man that fucking sucks what province are you in?

Woah woah woah there, reign your horse in their buddy.

I read the statement, it's blatantly obvious. If perhaps English ain't your first language and it doesn't translate I could understand but what he had written previously he was hardly being serious about the dude being beat up and robbed being awesome, especially considering his injuries.

But now you know. You learned something today.

Back when I used to sell stolen ipod touches I had this guy slip me a handful of cash and I was in such a hurry I didn't count it but when I got to work I noticed it was only like $40.

You're attempting to call my English into question lol. Must be some stupid American sarcasm, never heard that shit where I'm from. Besides, there's different uses for 'their' and 'there' and that's something you should learn buddy.

You're hella salty about not knowing one of the most common uses of sarcasm in the world's history.

"That's not some sarcasm that I'm familiar with. When something is "awesome" it's usually associated with positive things. Unfortunately for your friend, that wasn't the case here."

This is what Merriam-Webster says about it: Sarcasm refers to the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to say, especially in order to insult someone, or to show irritation, or just to be funny. For example, saying "they're really on top of things" to describe a group of people who are very disorganized is using sarcasm. Most often, sarcasm is biting, and intended to cause pain.

What form of sarcasm ARE you familiar with? It's his friend. He said it was "awesome" that his boy got fucked up. That's literally what sarcasm is.

Nope, that isn't one of the most common uses of sarcasm, especially where I'm from. Where I'm from we're more direct to the point, "that's absolute bullshit man" and that's job done. Besides Artemis, you're always following my ass around with likes and comments. I'm starting to have thoughts man.

Yeah, that statement isn't sarcasm.

Again, "where you are from", how is sarcasm used?
I'm not accustomed to it and I've never heard people use "fucking awesome" in a sarcastic manner. Must be a colonial thing and lets leave it at that. It isn't fucking awesome.

Obviously it isn't awesome. That's the sarcastic part. lmao it's like the entire concept of sarcasm doesn't exist to YOU PEOPLE. Must be a redcoat thing.

Also when you done trying to dunk on the USA feel free to give the people an explanation as to why you have a New York Giants avatar. In the colonies, we call that "irony".

That last part was suppose to be facetious, but I shouldn't written it because seems as though you ran with it. Who said I was dunking on the USA, I just have never heard expression of "winning the shit lottery". And I have a New York Giants avatar because I've been supporting the team ever since I was a child. You can have your shit lottery and I hope it's awesome for you dude. That was facetious by the way.

Life lesson. I got scammed for 1.5k before. Gave a deposit for a fence company to put a fence down, he took the money and left town. Taking him to court would have cost more than 1.5k so I just took the L.

I was saving $300...people buy phones in contract and sell it. This is my 5-6th purchase over last 12 years or so

Man, that's not too much in terms of savings to buy a phone from a sketchy guy/girl on the internet over the store. Take it as a life lesson, if you are going to continue doing this, ALWAYS test the product yourself and examine it. This will most likely be the only chance you will ever be in contact with this person, you shouldn't accept things just because you don't want things to get awkward.

People back in Canada can be a little too trusting sometimes.

Sorry OP, that sucks. But honestly I don't get how anybody can buy stuff off of sites like craigslist where there's zero security, zero safety net. I could never do that.

got scammed twice on Amazon, high rated sellers and high volume votes. told myself no more 2nd hand purchase of devices.

The more expensive the lesson, the better the chance that you’ll learn it first time.

I’ve never understood the impulse to buy a second hand phone from a stranger. If I’m spending that much money on something, I want guarantees, receipts, everything. The peace of mind premium is worth way more to me than the risk of losing the “cheaper” sum.

To me it’s very short term thinking to take the cheaper at face value price, and combined with the fact that people don’t seem to live within their means it makes it very easy to become a victim.

Haha I bought speakers in college off the "van guys". Were like 300 bucks and I had them for years. Perfect giant speakers for setting up at house parties. No ragrets.

Do you have her number? Leave her the Taken speech on her voicemail, with "money" substituted for "daughter":

Another one.

Neightbour of mine also got hit by 2 douchebags, some girl and guy showed up to buy his laptop 1,5k or something. Everything seemed fine, they didn't had cash with them because everything goes through apps now. They showcased them on there mobile they wrote the money over which took a day at the time to actually show up. They got the laptop and walked out. Obviously money was never transferred and bye bye laptop.

Then some real next gen scamming in the next one and last one:

In short, some shitter started up a company and hired people never paid them, did it on a whole bunch of empty promises. Made a dad of a friend of mine co-owner ( he didn't know anything about the company, but got flattered into it and he needed work badly after a few months being out of work ), the guy that started the company basically pushed massive loans, did all kinds of jobs with the company banked the cash but never really delivered the work. used his dad ( dad of that friend of mine ) as advertisement tool and face of the company and made him ceo of his shitty 8 man strong company.

He then funneled all the money out of the company through his brothers new found company that he hired for insane amounts of fee think about 3000 euro's a hour. Everybody in the company where not paid for a long time probably up to a year. Then the shitter dropped the company without his dad knowledge as he really has no clue what was going on and this was proven entirely on him. so no the company all its debts and tons of angry people started to sue his ass and that all in the span of a month or two.

He lost his house / everything he owned, 3 years poverty etc. After he attempted suicide a year in and i told my dad about it. As my dad kinda had a lot of disposable income at the time. he basically took large of his debt away and legal problems by buying it off for him, and basically arranged a job for him in a company he often visited. Fast forwards they are best friends now so that worked well out for both of them as my dad was kinda bored to shit mostly. he often visits them and the other way around also.

So even for the guy, it ended pretty well at the end but yea.

I would say honestly, be happy its 1k in cash and nothing else happened. Some of those fucks are some real next level trash cans. They can give you a real mobile, follow your ass and rob you in your own house straight after it.

Could very well be she wasn't alone there even remotely and some gang was right next towards her scouting u out.

God that's terrible... that's also why I answer the door to strangers with my 9mm in hand.
